This is another case of just not being able to hire the right assistants (on both sides of the ball).
Also, Sumlin cannot get his teams to consistently finish games. He can't get them over that mental hump.

IMO: He's gone at the end of this season with anything short of winning the west.

The funny thing about this game is my wife and I headed out for a bit when this was a blowout. We came back in, turned the TV on and just stood there dumbfounded. It was right as UCLA got the ball back on downs and had a 1 point lead. Trying to figure that out was difficult.

So many things have to go wrong, but I think these two plays really lays out how artfully Texas A&M screwed this one up. There are just under 5 minutes to go in the game. You are protecting a now precarious 13 point lead. A field goal essentially seals the deal. You are already set up for an easy field goal.

What do you do? You go backwards of course...

  • 3rd and 4 at UCLA 16

(4:45 - 4th) Kellen Mond sacked by Keisean Lucier-South for a loss of 9 yards to the UCLA 25
  • (4:44 - 4th) Timeout UCLA, clock 04:44
  • 4th and 13 at UCLA 25

    (4:41 - 4th) Braden Mann 43 yd FG MISSED

Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
I watched most of this game and one glaring thing was how in the second half aTm made no effort to slow down the pace. I saw on more than a handful of occasions in the second half the ball being snapped with more than double digits on the play clock and the game clock running. I don't think they know how to slow down. It's so foreign to them. I'm sure for most of these kids that's all they know from HS. Because so many HS offenses now run some form of the hurry up.

He can't finish games or seasons. They will never win the West with him at the helm unless something goes really bad with the other contenders. If he lucks up in that way it would be the worst thing possible, as it would prolong his tenure there. He is Mike Shula reincarnate. His teams just look a lot cooler. The results are mostly the same.

For everyone that didn't see this during the game...

swaggie gonna swaggie

I think it was Abraham Lincoln who said the hen doesn't cackle until she lays the egg.
That kind of behavior might be better with the same score and quad 0s on the .... (although I generally do not approve of taunting you opponents any time), but in the 2nd quarter? Well, video snippets like that come back to haunt you.

Very true. I love watching all of them have to eat crow when it is all said and done. I bet showboating didn't feel to good when UCLA put up 35 unanswered on them.

A&M and Mizzou do not belong in the SEC.
But their money does, heh.

One could argue that FSU and Oklahoma "belong", but I'll take A&M, Missouri, and the money over a tougher schedule and not more money. :)

Also, Alabama's starting quarterback is from Texas. I don't think the extra exposure in the state hurts recruiting much either.

Agree on Mizzou, but I'm happy we added aTm. Lot of money and a quality culture came with them, and they sit on so much talent that they, with the right coach, could make some real noise in the conference. Just can't get out of their own way to get over the hump.
LOL, people have been saying that about A&M for decades, yet...
