I don't believe he'll be fired until the end of the season. I think it'll be done with an air of class, unspoken bbutthe ccountdown has begin.

Could be crazy wrong, I dunno.

Well, the air of class didn't last long.

This sort of thing is exactly why UTw and aTm have such a hard time attracting good coaches.

A Regent goes public with a call to fire after one (inexcusable) loss, in the season opener, alone, with no vote from the board? And he criticizes Sumlin for being arrogant? Really?

Look, I understand the frustration. I understand the sentiment. I would understand him calling other Regents to arrange an emergency conference call at 2AM. But he went public first.

Sumlin is toast in any event, and deserves to be. But Buzbee is sending a strong message to the next coach, whoever that poor guy might be....."If you do not perform, the AD will leave you twisting in the breeze before the season even starts. Then, if you do not improve, the Board of Regents will publicly humiliate you."

Not exactly what one would call sound long term personnel management. And anybody who would do that is not worthy of a fiduciary position that, by its very nature, demands a long view.

Sumlin is gone in any event. Buzbee, in an act of ego and in absolute contravention of his duty, has made the situation more difficult to remedy. He himself should be removed from his position of trust.

I keep checking this thread to see if Sumlin has been fired yet. It will be interesting the next few days or weeks over there.

Re: Texas A&M at UCLA Game Thread (aka The Hot Seat Bowl)

This reminds me of that gorgeous info graphic someone made of the Notre dame Bama bcs game. Y'know, except all these stats seem like they were pulled from a nightmare. I haven't checked for accuracy, but if true....Ugh.

That is pretty damning, but the "home record" stat confuses me. How can they be 1-6 the last 3 seasons at home? That should be one season's worth of home games right there. Similarly, 5-9 covers 2 seasons, not 4. Or am I missing something.

With 3 timeouts left on that last drive, the freshman QB for A&M deserved a timeout or two to be able to regroup. Sumlin had an opportunity to teach him and help him learn.

Hope they mail those 3 timeouts with his unemployment check.

A lot of the talking heads are criticizing the board of regents member for publicly calling for Sumlin's firing. But here's the thing, "we" as a football culture in this country have gotten so used to coaches making literally millions on top of millions of dollars. We've become desensitized to the fact that is a sick amount of money to coach football. COACH FOOTBALL. So when a coach gets paid this amount of money. He better have Urban Meyer/Nick Saban type results. As a coach if you demand an unrealistic salary then expect unrealistic expectations. It's the nature of the beast. Nick Saban has been the only coach who (IMO) has been worth the salary he's made. He's made the unrealistic expectations come true. That is a rarity, and other less worthy coaches have benefited from Saban's success through increase in coaches' salaries. He's actually earned it.

I don't think anybody has a problem with average everyday fans calling for his firing. Fans will be fans.

I don't think anybody has a problem with the BoR, as a body, considering termination in a deliberate and dignified manner, out of the public eye, and coming forward with a statement only after there is consensus.

The problem comes when a single a Regent goes public alone with a statement that affects the most prominent face of the institution. Unless he polled the BoR before publishing his rant, he was out of line. Not with the sentiment. Not with the intent. But with the method of delivery and the forum.

If Buzbee did poll the BoR, and they didn't come out as a unified front, well, that's a cowardly way to hide behind one of your own. I don't think that happened, but it is the other possibility, however remote.

So Buzbee was egotistical and way out of line, or the BoR as a whole was cowardly. I go with the first.

I don't know why he isn't already fired. You could fire him after this game and everyone would be like "yeah well that makes sense." You wait any longer and you leave the opening for media hand wringing over the termination.
It's all a matter of timing. That window is closing fast.

TAMU could be talking with Les on back channels. CLK would die for this job.
