Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

The first time I saw him breakdown was in Co St. During some kind of award presentation, a government official, either a mayor or the governor I think, called the team "Colorado" instead of "Colorado State."
I thought he was actually going to cry on television. He is evidently super emotional and has problems with the stress and pressure a head coach is under.

You can always tell when he's about to start breaking down. If he's on the field doing the interview he'll start looking around at the stadium and saying "Look at this, isn't this great?" and then the voice starts cracking, and he goes on this emotional driven speech that may or may not have anything to do with the question he was asked, while right on the verge of breaking into a full blown weep.

Yep. It's very noticeable.

Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

I'll be honest. I was completely wrong about Mac taking over the UF program and it being a very good move on their part.
This is an inherent risk of promoting a coordinator to head coach, or hiring a head coach with limited experience who never did anything meaningful. Right how Smart looks like a good hire and as far as I'm concerned, Mac was someone who got in over his head a bit too soon. How do you really know that before you give them a high profile job though? I wouldn't write him off entirely just yet though. Either way, Florida could easily screw this up and make things worse though (I doubt they can top LSU though), so this will be interesting to watch.

It's a rolling of the dice no doubt. The more secure bet is to hire an established coach with a proven track record of success. But even then there are risks it doesn't work out. But the risks are much lower, IMO.

Yup..There's just to much risk involved hiring a HC with no HC'ing experience..When there's many really good HC's at smaller schools or coaching on the D11 level you could hire that has a year's of experience under their belts & has their own "Process" perfected..

Randy Shannon!!! Boy I really haven't been paying attention to FLA. I didn't even know he was on the staff. He just vanished after the Miami job it seemed. I would not have known he was even actively coaching.

Your last 4 games are completely winnable too. He could realistically go 4-0 heading into the bowl season. That would make things even more intriguing!!

Got a feel that Charlie Strong has been called.

Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

Mac's tenure at Florida will certainly rank as one of the strangest runs for a SEC head coach. Back-to-back division titles by a team that never passed the "eye test" as a really good team. An offensive specialist at head coach who couldn't get an offense going. A remarkably short leash for a guy who won 10 and 9 games, respectively, in his first two years. The whole bizarro-ville death threat stuff, etc. I guess time will tell whether Coach Mac was just a bad fit under bad circumstances at Florida, or he's just a great coordinator who isn't head coach material.

True, but remember who is calling the plays now.

Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

In hindsight that might seem like a bad move, but at the time things looked pretty bad. The guy bulks up, tests positive for a banned substance, and some were even asking if wins would be vacated. His suspension clearly put Florida in a bad spot. I'm not really sure how else they were supposed to handle it, should Urban have kept Cam around after the laptop incident?

Apoligies if someone's already said this- I'm catching up on this long thread.

BUT - Urban WAS going to let $Cum KNEWton stay on the UF team after the laptop incidence. $Cum was NOT kicked off the team. He left UF ONLY after he was notified that he was about to be brought up by the Academic side of UF for alleged academic Cheating. THAT's when he decided to "pursue other opportunities" at a JUCO.

Just wanted to share that - and again - I'll look, and delete this if its already been covered.

We've seen two Florida coaches jump ship after winning national championships. It sounds to me like even when times are good in Gainesville, the coach is looking for a better deal.

And then, when times are bad...they get really bad.

I appreciate what he has done here, but I hope Saban butts out once he retires.
