Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

it sounds like Mac did very little to retain Grier.
In hindsight that might seem like a bad move, but at the time things looked pretty bad. The guy bulks up, tests positive for a banned substance, and some were even asking if wins would be vacated. His suspension clearly put Florida in a bad spot. I'm not really sure how else they were supposed to handle it, should Urban have kept Cam around after the laptop incident?

Not saying Mac was a world beater, but having Steve Quitter hovering over your shoulder isn't exactly a vote of confidence and may very well have played in to what came down.

Matt Hayes @MattHayesCFB Source told me Spurrier reached out twice to McElwain this fall to offer help, was told no thanks. That alone is fireable offense. #Gators

This is just journo-nonsense from Matt Hayes. Is it fireable if Gus turns down Pat Dye? Come on.

Did you miss the Tubberville era of Auburn football? To answer your question Yes it is if you are a nobody. Tubberville clashed with that 1983 and 1970’s people in the loop. He ultimately was let go because he wasn’t an Auburn man. To a degree many Bama coaches had those Bear boys snooping around.

The point is Mac should have never been offered or taken the job without knowing what he was in for. Unless you are CNS or Urban you have to realize that you are not in full control of that program.

Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

I get the feeling that CJM wanted to leave just as bad as the admin wanted him gone.

It's a shame it has been handled the way it has.
Yep, I was beating around that bush. I think he made a mistake taking the Florida job. The guy seems like a West Coast sorta guy. I think he can coach up a quality football squad but his personality just isn't one for the microscope of Paul Finebaum Show country. He probably could've had Colorado State functioning like a new Boise State right now if he had stayed an additional three seasons. Heck, he could've taken a job at a PAC-12 school and enjoyed a similar degree of anonymity w/r/t building a program. It takes a special person to be able to deal with amount of interest your work draws locally, regionally, and even nationally. McElwain just didn't seem pleased with how his fanbase and media by proxy was disappointed with what he considered good seasons given his lack of a quarterback. Guys like Saban and Meyer let that stuff slide off like water on a duck's back.

In case anyone missed this and is wondering about the behind the scenes stuff...
http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...ion-most-prolific-qb-way-more-famous-brothers I'm sure there is more to it than presented in this article, but it sounds like Mac did very little to retain Grier.
If what the Grier's say is true, Mac completely mishandled the situation and is at fault more than we realized. People used Grier's dismissal as a defense for Mac, but it looks more like it was Mac's fault than anything.

People would have been understanding if the first season didn't do well with Grier's suspension but he came back in year two and did well.

But Mac didn't know Spurrier would be on campus when he was hired since Spurrier was still coaching.

Never seen a whole program implode like Florida is right now.
When you see pressers with ADs taking pot shots at one another, you are in trouble. I mentioned this to a friend last year when the FL/LSU ADs were acting like children. Both programs were in deep doo, and neither seemed to recognize the lack of leadership.

They can have all of that too. Just glad that we can sit back and watch football and some of the football world burn. After catching it from Florida fans this season, I can't say I feel sorry for them.

To be fair, that was former Florida AD Jeremy Foley on his way out, so he gave absolutely zero crap. He knew he wasn't going to be punished for saying anything.

Let's be real folks, Mac was fired for letting his players wear those ugly gator uniforms a few weeks ago. Spurrier called twice begging him not to do it but, he did it anyway.

I think it's great that UF has there own Pat Dye hanging around. It's worked out so great for AU that this is going to be fun to watch for the next few decades.

^^^ Agree. This kid had his head screwed on wrong. A change of scenery was what he needed. Poor Mac just didn't have a good back-up plan. I don't know if Mac is to blame for all the nutjobs on that team or if it's all leftovers from the previous coaches. Thought Muschamp had "cleaned things up" after Urban. Maybe not so much.

Re: Florida boosters are discussing buyout for Mac

I'll be honest. I was completely wrong about Mac taking over the UF program and it being a very good move on their part. I was certain he would turn them around and have them moving in the right direction in no time. But I didn't realize what an emotionally unstable person he is when things get rough. I noticed it last year in almost every interview (be it pre-game, halftime or post game) he would reach a point where it sounded like he was on the verge of crying. To me that was a huge red flag that maybe he isn't cut out to be the head coach of an SEC team, where the frying pan never gets turned down or off. It's always hot. He seems cutout for a place like he left, Colorado St. I'd be surprised if he's offered another HC at a big time program. He's basically wet the bed with this opportunity.

The first time I saw him breakdown was in Co St. During some kind of award presentation, a government official, either a mayor or the governor I think, called the team "Colorado" instead of "Colorado State."
I thought he was actually going to cry on television. He is evidently super emotional and has problems with the stress and pressure a head coach is under.
