Is this Tua's team now?

Bama has had plenty of games where the defense was fully prepared for the other teams offense but still managed to make halftime adjustments to improve the 2nd half play. There are things that coaches pick up on that take place in the 1st half that may not have been totally expected or maybe not obvious on film of other games.

Tagovailoa's has a quicker realease than Hurts and he moves up and hangs in the pocket longer which makes the additional time available to make a decision and through seem like an eternity.

His play definitely opened up the running game.

a lot of his throws last night were made a split second before they hit him

Tua and Najee were so goofy at the media day together. You could tell they are such good friends.

I love how they can be so loose and acting goofy...but both come up clutch in the game.

No doubt about it and I'll add this as well. For someone to say (not saying you specifically said this) "If Tua would have played the first half UGA's staff would have had a better feel of what he was doing and had time to make adjustments and slow him down". Making the argument that if Tua would have played the entire game he wouldn't have necessarily put up 5/6 Td's and over 300 yards passing.

I'm saying he more than likely would have. His skills (quick release, vision, quick decision making) limits the adjustments available to the opposing team's DC. When you've got a QB that gets the ball out that fast it takes a lot of the adjustments you can do at the line with your DL and LB's completely out of play. Leaving the DC with only a limited amount of adjustments he can realistically go to. In other words he completely changes the complexion of the entire game from what you can do on offense and what the opposing defensive coordinator can do schematically.

Lane Kiffin just now on the Dan Patrick show "Tua would've transferred if he didn't play in this game." Wow..

Also from Kiffin "We didn't shed a tear when Fromm decommitted. We liked Tua better. He's got a higher ceiling."

I'm taking this comment with a grain of salt and am calling it borderline bull. Herbie disclosed after the game that the staff (Saban in particular) had struggled all year on whether to make the change. If we would have kept Hurts in and gone on to lose the game there would be no doubt Tua would be our QB next season. I also have to believe that Tua completely understood how close he was to truly being given a shot to start. I doubt this one game would have sent him over the edge to transfer. This is just Lane being Lane.

Well, I am just so glad the Fromm decided to go to Ga last year instead of Bama. He is a very good QB, but we got Tua. That young man is something very special.

Things were closer than I thought. OTOH, consider the source and his love for the dramatic...

I tend to agree...

Well, even if what Lane says is true who cares? He is officially a Bama legend and he isn't going anywhere now.

I agree ... lets not forget this was the same guy that has the rumor that Tua would have went to LSU if he was hired as their OC ... funny how the center of all of this is Kiffin

The fact of the matter is that the offense, as a whole, has wanted - and requested - Tua for quite some time. Last night, we saw why...

And both sides of the ball responded in a big way. You could see more life in both sides of the ball after that first series of the second half.

CNS always talks about a moment, or several moments, where his starting QB takes the position by the horns, and the team responds positively. He has spoken more and more on this each year a new QB has taken over recently (Sims, Coker eventually, Hurts unflappability). To me, there's no way CNS doesn't see the internal team benefits of Tua playing last night (entire team energized, adjustments lead to better offensive success, Tua playing more mistake-free football than before) combined with the offensive team's asking to give Tua more playing time, or to make the QB change, and not give Tua the job. I fully expect CNS to give another QB competition a go to ensure he's making the right decision, but I believe this is now Tua's team. It may also be better to say that this has become the freshmen's team with Tua, Jeudy, Ruggs, Smith, Leatherwood, etc. playing in prominent roles now.

These two characteristics that Tua possesses are part of his "bread and butter". The last TD pass was a prime example of the quick release - if he lets it go a half second longer the FS gets to the ball. It HAD to come out right then to have a chance to be completed. There were multiple occasions where I thought to myself "If JH had still be in, he'd have been running"... one of those times being the TD pass to Ridley.

Another thing that Tua does is spread the ball around. It was mentioned leading up to the CFP, but his distribution is just unreal when you look at the play-by-play summary. Notice the times he attempted/completed throws to guys...

Ridley - 7
Smith - 3
Ruggs - 3
Jeudy - 2
Sims - 2
Foster -2
Hentges - 1
Harris - 1
Scarborough - 1

I obviously realize that some of these were designed by Daboll to target guys (i.e. Harris/Scarborough throws). However, when is the last time you saw both Foster and Sims have two balls thrown to them in one half? While it was scary, think about what Jeudy thought when Tua almost connected with him in the back of the end zone before the Ridley TD - "he's not afraid to throw it to me when the game is on the line - even if I'm double covered!" That kind of distribution creates great effort on the part of receivers - and also creates great confidence in them as well.

Kiffin might have been be somewhat right. If Jalen plays well and we win the game I don't think Tua would have gotten very upset and transferred, but the way the game was going in the 1st half I could see how Tua might have gotten upset if not given a chance and we get blown out with Jalen. I would have been upset with Coach Saban myself. I agree with Kiffin that Tua has a higher ceiling than Fromm.

One thing I noticed during the year is the one interception by Jalen. I would always tell my wife that the reason for the one interception is he was afraid to throw the 50/50 ball. Yes the offense is light years ahead with Tua, but we also have to realize there will be more interceptions.

How about Jalen to safety or slot receiver? I really don't see him transferring because he loves the Tide

Absolutely!! That is one reason a Quick Release is the number one prerequisite for NFL QBs
Spread the field vertically and horizontally then with a great tailback the team becomes a tremendous challenge to defend.

Lane has to be doing great harm to his future with his loose talk. What AD and Admin. would trust him. His constant tweeting about Saban's Butt chewing seems old and childish to me!

depends on how much liquid courage he has consumed....apparently a lot since the season ended
