Alabama QB competition article

Peter Burns just tweeted out what I suggested earlier in the thread: "If I'm Jalen Hurts here's how I handle the QB situation at Bama. Battle like hell for the starting spot. If you don't win it, don't transfer but instead redshirt at Alabama. Be willing to burn redshirt if needed, graduate in December and then decide where you play your final 2 years." Not sure how viable this would be with the comments from Jalen's dad, the recent comments from Tua about transferring if he didn't play in the NCG, Tua's brother recently committing to Bama etc. If doable, I think this outcome would best for all involved including Jalen. He and his family would have to humble themselves for a year while Jalen redshirts at Alabama. Not sure that will happen..

That would be my recommendation if Jalen were to ask me.
(Standing by the phone...)

Back to Tua. Many kids have seriously considered transferring but did not. When it comes time to do it, things often change. Also, my impression is that his parents were not for a transfer, at least not earlier.

I've said the same, earlier in this thread.

If Jalen still believes he has a shot at the NFL as a QB, I believe it is his best option so he could have two years to play two somewhere else.

Of course, CNS would have to be complicit with such a "plan" and considering how Jalen was loyal and faithful in the first two years to CNS, he might just let him play it out this way.

However, as I think about Jalen's deficiencies as a QB, I'm not convinced his transferring to another program will go as he thinks. The only way he got away with his type of play without getting yanked in his first two years at Bama is because his gamble to become a "3 and out" qb worked because we/he had the best talent (especially defense) in college football to bail him out.

Whereever JH transfer to play QB (if this is what eventually happens) he will have to put up big offensive numbers that translate into TDs (passing and/or running) and if he doesn't he won't have other players around him and a great defense to bail him out of his inability to move the sticks.

Pretty much agree. Unless Jalen improves tremendously as a passer over the next 2 years he won't even get an invite to the combine or be on any teams board of draftable QBs. I still think he could be a great college QB at a school with an offensive genius like Oklahoma. Obviously, the offense would be a little different than what Mayfield was doing but I think Lincoln Riley has a great offensive mind and could do a lot with Jalen. The worse place he could go would be somewhere like Michigan or Wisconsin where they run old school pro style. He needs to go to an up-tempo RPO offense..

I love the idea of Jalen at Oklahoma but they have their own version of him right now.

They sure do. Can't think of his name but he was the QB that transferred from aTm. He's a lot smaller than Jalen but incredibly quick and supposedly has a strong arm..

Kyler Murray. He is crazy fast too. He's apparently really good at baseball though so I suppose its possible he quits football.

They were cool with it.

This from an article from a home town site.

“I called my dad and asked him if my offer to the University of Southern California was still available,” Tagovailoa told the crowd of seventh and eighth graders. “I wanted to leave. I told my dad I wanted to go to a school where I thought it’d be easier for me and wouldn’t challenge me so much.”

The former Crusader went on to tell the students that this particular conversation with his father took place early in his time in Tuscaloosa – and that it actually landed him in hot water with his family.

Surely Saban knew this already, or at least suspected it. I don't think he's that out of tune with his players. If he didn't know it, he probably should have. I would think he'd be proud of one of his players advising young students to persevere.
