Washington/Pac-12 looks to make a statement vs. Auburn/SEC

I just hope that they are good games. There is no way to guess what Auburn or LSU will look like.

Auburn seems to always have a really bad opening game. It takes them a few games to figure out how to run their 6 plays. But once they do, they are a challenge.

Some of you guys don't get it. Yeah, we hate Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, etc. I know, I know. But our schedule is also weak this year. We need these teams to look strong against other conferences to bolster our own SoS, since the meat of it is from the SEC. We can't really claim a non-conference powerhouse win like we have in the past (I am going to forget for now that FSU managed to destroy that perception for us last year). If we have a dropped game but are still close on getting into the playoffs, we don't need silly things to happen like Auburn losing to Washington or LSU losing to Miami. Let them drop their games against the Troy's of the world, and even though that looks bad, it looks more like a blip than the ability of the Pac-?? being able to claim that they can hang with teams Alabama plays.

Agreed. I actually rather Auburn or LSU lose in conference. Gives us an insurance policy for making the SECCG in case we drop a game plus as you said it bolsters our record if we beat an Auburn and LSU teams that beat top teams from other conferences.

I'll take my chances. Never pulling for the teams that actively participated in an attempt at the destruction of Alabama football. Never.

Screw them all, I hate the SEC.

It's not about pulling for them. It is about pulling for any and every possible thing that will bolster Alabama's chances of making the playoffs. I can't stand some of these teams we are talking about, but I care more about making Alabama look good than I care about having any of them look bad. As far as the SEC goes, I don't care for them much either, but this is the ugly woman we have gotten into bed with, so we might as well close our eyes and get it over with.

Yet our best wins last year were against 9-4 MSU and LSU, and Fresno St. Yet we won the national championship. And LSU lost to TROY on HC!!!!

Yes we get it, and we don’t care because there isn’t a computer algorithm deciding 2 spots anymore. Alabama has staying power, and winning the SEC would get us in if we don’t have more than 1 loss 99% of the time.

Again when since 2011 has an SEC schedule helped us out? Answer never. The Big 10 has had a far superior conference in the last 4 years, but their champ has been left out of the playoffs twice.

So again RTR and screw the 13 dwarves.

That is far from true. If we had any of our records from 2009 to now playing in the AAC, how many championships do you think we would have earned? God, some of our fans are so arrogant.

AAC? You need to at least talk about P5 conferences.

I`m always conflicted on this. Intellectually, I know and understand why I should want to see the other conference teams win. Emotionally........? Another story entirely, especially knowing that the vast majority of their fan bases hate us and want to see us lose every time we run out on the field. Or at least that`s my impression.

No fans want Alabama to lose more than fans of other SEC teams.

The SEC schedule from 11-present has been very mediocre. We have gotten in from 12- now because # of wins and losses and not because overall Sos. TOSU and USC had way better SOS than us last year. But who spent their holidays in Dallas and who spent their holidays in NOLA? Alabama could’ve been a 1 loss PAC 12 team and made it in last year.

Point is SOS hasn’t been near as important as it was since 2011.

God some of our fans just cant admit that they like Auburn, UGA, LSU, UF, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, MSU, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vandy, aTm, and UT as second teams. *** blue font***

Generally agree, as long as the team that might knock you out in the final vote has a clearly better one, which is rare. What is more critical is a big win against a highly ranked opponent, and no losses to weak opponents. So, schedule a few big games, in or out of conference, and don't stumble against your weaker opponents.

It's been up and down but holds steady between 7-8.5 avg wins per SEC West team(other than us). The only time it surged was when we dropped more than 1 game in the regular season. We've been dominant for longer leading other teams to fire coaches and take a step back. It was actually on the upswing last year and in 2015.

Turns out it is hard for a division to average 9 win seasons when a dynasty exists in it.

The rest of the SEC wants Bama to lose every game, but I don't care what they want. I also don't care about their programs, but I won't go so far as to say I want a 1-13 SEC opening week. That would mean the SEC losing to Coastal Carolina (So.Car), APSU (UGA), CMU (UK), E. Ill. (ARK), UT-Martin (Mizzou), Charleston Southern (UF), MTSU (Vandy), Stephen F. Austin (MSU), and NW St. (A&M). Hope all you want, but it's not gonna happen. Even a couple of those upsets would be fodder for the talking heads to declare the SEC a mid-major for 2018. I don't put any stock in that, but it is different in this age of 24 hour news and sports saturation. In the 70's the SEC was basically Alabama and the 9 dwarfs but, it didn't matter near as much to the media.

The remaining 5 opening-week SEC contests will be the ones that receive the most media scrutiny. Alabama-Louisville will be downplayed if Bama wins handily, but will be hailed as a major exposure if it is close or Louisville should manage the unthinkable. Texas Tech over Ole Miss will come as no surprise, and West Virginia over Tennessee will not either. UW vs. *u should be a decent match-up and I can see it going either way. The Huskies will get my moral support, for what it's worth. LSU and Miami would have been an easy call for the coonasses just a few years ago, but the coaching changes at each school makes LSU less palatable and Miami moreso. But, I'll just watch and try to enjoy either outcome. At the end of the weekend, I'll be happy as long as Alabama is 1-0, but even happier if *u is 0-1, the teams playing cupcakes go 9-0, and for Ole Miss, LSU, and UT I really won't be bothered either way.

The bolded quote is hardly true. The CFP Committee may have been looking at the Sagarin ratings for the past 4 years when weighing OSU vs Alabama last year. No reasonable person could say the B10 is far superior, if anything the SEC is still superior and the SEC West remains the toughest division. This is why the SEC and especially Alabama still get the benefit of the doubt.

Sagarin rankings for the past 4 years. He also ranks divisions and includes entire conferences where there is no division.

2014 SEC: NC: 0, Top 10: 5, Top 30: 11, Bowl: 7-5, East Div rank: 3, West Div Rank: 1
2014 B10: NC: 1, Top 10: 2, Top 30: 04, Bowl: 6-5, East Div rank: 5, West Div Rank: 8
2015 SEC: NC: 1, Top 10: 3, Top 30: 09, Bowl: 9-2, East Div rank: 9, West Div Rank: 1
2015 B10: NC: 0, Top 10: 2, Top 30: 05, Bowl: 5-5, East Div rank: 5, West Div Rank: 8
2016 SEC: NC: 0, Top 10: 2, Top 30: 06, Bowl: 6-7, East Div rank: 8, West Div Rank: 1
2016 B10: NC: 0, Top 10: 3, Top 30: 05, Bowl: 3-7, East Div rank: 6, West Div Rank: 7
2017 SEC: NC: 1, Top 10: 3, Top 30: 05, Bowl: 5-6, East Div rank: 9, West Div Rank: 1
2017 B10: NC: 0, Top 10: 3, Top 30: 07, Bowl: 7-1, East Div rank: 3, West Div Rank: 6

Total SEC: NC: 2, Top 10: 13, Top 30: 31, Bowl: 27-20, East Div avg rank: 7.25, West Div avg rank: 1
Total B10: NC: 1, Top 10: 10, Top 30: 21, Bowl: 21-18, East Div avg rank: 4.75, West Div avg rank: 7.25

Also I have two other issues with the chant...

1) it sounds like you are copying wrestling fans in the 90’s in saying “WCW” “ECW” or whatever while watching a male soap opera and 2) I have to ask myself “what did the other dwarves have to do with us whooping Norte Dame 42-14???”

So y’all can join the dwarves and chanting “SEC SEC SEC” all y’all want to but I’ll stick to king’s Words and that is “Roll Tide Roll” and “Rammer Jammer”.

Funny thing about stats is that you can make them back up any controversial point you want. For instance the SEC West didn’t win but 2 bowl games with that “impressive ranking” and the SEC lost every major bowl game. 2-2 vs Big 10 with the Big 10 as the National champion.

Also your forgetting one major thing.....,

ALABAMA automatically brings up SEC numbers!!!

That`ll pretty much sum up my mental makeup that weekend, with the possible exception of LSU. I lived too long amongst the corndogs. They win a ball game or two and they are insufferable! Beat Miami and it`ll be, " That`s it. It`s in the bag. National champs. Everybody else might as well forget it." Or at least that`s how they used to be. Besides, we`re head to head with them for 2-3 really good recruits. I want them to stink.

Surely you would agree that numbers do have value? I'm not contending that these are the final say - the AP numbers are more favorable to the B10. But they do indicate that it is very difficult to say that the Big 10 has been far superior to the SEC in the last 4 years. In fact, the argument can be made the SEC is the better conference.

Sure Bama brings up those numbers, they are an SEC member as OSU is a member of the Big 10.

We can do a lot of picking: in 2016 the Big 10 had 3 top 10 Sagarin teams, 4 in the AP, the only one of the 4 who won their major bowl was Wisc close over WMU. This included OSU's humiliating 31-0 loss to Clemson in the playoff. When the B10 has made the playoff, 2 of the last 3 years, they have been drummed 69-0.

The bottom line is that a reasonable case can be made that the SEC was at least the equal of the Big 10 during the past 4 years. Not close to far inferior.
