How long will UGA put up with Kirby if 2019 ends in a failure?

All I’ve heard from UGA fans is how 2019 is “The Year”. But what if Georgia Georgia’s again? I mean you can forgive them for the hardest schedule in the country, but UGA on paper might be the most loaded and most experienced team in the nation.

Kirby has the same exact record as Richt in his first 3 years, and has lost 2 highly rated QBs because of Fromm ( granted Fromm is a NFL talent himself). But it seems UGA fans are backing themselves in a do or die season for 2019. I think most of it is because they fear Mullen and Pruitt are going to be serious contenders in the next few years in the east.

More or less my question is “ if Kirby doesn’t get it done next year, will Georgia fans start to question if he will ever get it done and start to look at him as Marc Richt 2.0 instead of Vince Dooley 2.0?”

Living here in Georgia....Heck no....He's the next coming. He's got a decade here, easy...I'm not kidding. Sane folks that I know and have known for years start talking gibberish when it comes to the future of Georgia Football and that Kirby is going to be the next CNS. It's tough sledding over here for Bama fans if you want to talk about CFB. I'm tired of nodding my head, I just politely walk away now...

Kirby has probably bought himself another 5 years just based of these past two seasons. Things would really have to get bad for UGA to look to get rid of him, IMO.

I’m skeptical of Mullen until he proposes me wrong, I think he is a 9-3 to 10-2 coach at best. Which is fine, but not good enough to challenge Kirby, not seriously. Pruitt on the other hand is intriguing . He stayed in Georgia for recruiting and I really like the class at UT. A lot of bulk in the trenches. Time will tell on him as well, but he makes me nervous.

I guess we have to define failure, because if Kirby has a season like the last 2, I think he will be fine. If there is a dip like maybe 9-3 then there will be some grumbling. If he goes 4-5 years and gets close, but just can’t seem to get it done then maybe the ghost of Mark Richt will haunt the fanbase and they will make a change. Or at least talk about it for 4 or 5 years.

What he said is true. Georgia faithful swear that Kirby is starting a 20-25 year Nick Saban type dynasty run. I heard last year on sports radio that Kirby will win a NC in 2 years , and it took Nick 3 at Alabama. Of course that was before the title game. Dawgs were very confident. All I ever hear about is the fall of the Saban dynasty and the rise of Kirby. They swear it is happening right in front of our eyes. That ugly spike collared dog emblem is everywhere. I carry PeePee training pads in my truck if they get too excited. I just hand them one.

Kirby isn't wearing out his welcome anytime soon.

Having said that, the real question is how long can he coast on what he learned from Saban? He's recruiting well, and that helps when you take a picture of Alabama's recruiting board and use it. However, the further away he gets from his time at Alabama, the less useful any of that intel becomes. So he's embarking on a point where he has to rely on his evaluations and what not.

Not just that, but he also has to start dealing with promises he's made for playing time and the like. Fields is out of there (and so far he seems to have utterly failed in his handling of Fields), etc... so let's see how he does. The pressure is on him now, and either Georgia keeps it up and he keeps pace with Alabama, or he starts to fade.

Kirby can't keep making bone headed calls like the 4th and 11 fake punt, but he has done a great job so far. What sane person would consider replacing the man who put together the 2nd best team in the country 2 years in a row?

Now, some fans can be totally insane, but you have to ignore that group. They are crazy 24/7/365.

I'm skeptical of Kirby, but if Alabama wasn't in the national championship game last season, he might've already won one at UGA. They would for sure be in the playoffs if they held on to beat Alabama in the SECCG. There's a been a lot of great recruiters as HCs, but not as much of them won championships with that recruiting success. I feel like Dabo learned how to do that at Clemson, and he'll be the real threat to UGA when CNS leaves. As for Mullen and Pruitt, I think the jury is still out deliberating for different reasons: can Mullen change the narrative of his coaching reputation from MSU, and can Pruitt legitimately build UT back with CNS and Kirby as his main competition?

Kirby ain’t going nowhere. Georgia is relevant again.
Top recruiting classes back to back. Bama is the only thing in Georgia’s way of legendary status. Possibly back to back championship without Bama.

UGA came up just short against Bama 2 years in a row instead of only one and is now having trouble hanging onto those top athletes. Not convinced enough has changed for them. Meanwhile, Alabama surges ahead in recruiting and other areas. kirby's problem is he's trying to catch Alabama from 3 years ago and Alabama is continuing to move out of reach. To illustrate this:

I don't see Kirby going anywhere anytime soon. He's a great recruiter and a good coach. He might need someone else to beat CNS for him to win a title though.

I'm not sure that he "utterly failed" in his handing of Fields, if you are referring solely to the potential transfer. I didn't watch all of Georgia's games this year, so I can't speak to how Fields was utilized on every play. Personally, I wasn't impressed with what I did see from Fields during the year.

That is what I keep hearing. Most UGA fans are saying "Saban has to retire sometime. When he does Kirby will own the SEC." I have my doubts.
Also, who will Bama hire post-Saban that could go toe-to-toe with him? There are several options that could, so this is possibly just wishful thinking on their part. I would also add that we are much more familiar with KS than UGA fans are. If you think about it, the 4th and 11 type decision fits Kirby to a “t.” Overconfidence in one’s game plan instead of coaching the moment and adjusting could be his Achilles heel.

technically, they came up short twice in the same year ;)

Failing to beat Alabama right now isn't really a failure, though, in recruiting or on the field. Let's not pretend that he is falling behind anyone else. He is surging past everyone other than Alabama.

The question - will that be enough for GA fans? It is harder to endure being second best and hoping for a championship every year (and falling just short) than being further back in the pack and knowing it - far more painful.

Also depends on one's definition of "getting it done." I think many dawg fans would say he has already gotten it done. Of course they want to both beat us and win a natty, but I think most of them would consider their program a success as long as they are a consistent top 10 team, win the SEC occasionally, and are in the playoff hunt more often than not. Prior to Nick's arrival I think most Bama fans would have had the same standard. Maybe now our expectations are skewed in a way that will hurt Saban's eventual successor, but that is a possible topic for a separate thread. As far as Kirby and the dawgs go, it seems fairly likely that he can continue to meet rational fans' expectations.
