Players leaving early for the draft

Irv is a different type of TE, and some teams like them while others do not. He is a pass catcher, not a blocker. He is not OJ Howard, who learned to block before moving to the NFL. Some teams won't even look at him because of his poor blocking. Where he is taken is totally based on need and philosophy, not his measurables. He is, IMO, a big WR, not an NFL TE.

Where is the idea Irv is a poor blocker coming from?

Totally depends on the coaching that they get. I am not ready to assume that your defense will improve just because players stay. Their coaching was insufficient this year. With similar coaching next year, no, they will not be much better.
Combine the returning players that were healthy with returning healthy players(Trevon Diggs,Terrell Lewis, Christopher Allen etc.). Also add a really good recruiting class that will add much needed depth to our secondary and defensive line. With these two factors in mind, I think the defense will be much improved regardless of coaching. If the Coaching is mediocre, I trust Saban to re-evaluate.

He should have pretty fair measureables in the TE group, at least quickness and agility, maybe speed too.

You underestimate how good of a blocker he is.

He's more in the mold of Evan Engram (Ole Miss) than OJ Howard. Engram and Howard came out the same year and everyone had Howard going before Engram but that's not what happened. Engram went a few picks before Howard because of his pass catching ability and the league is a passing league. Similar thing could happen to Irv. Might not be as complete as some of the other TEs but he's the best receiving TE in the draft which will automatically make him the #1 TE on a lot of teams board..

Agreed - he and Jace Sternberger fit that mold in this draft.

What I think does not matter. I will be very happy to see him go in the first round. But watch Hentges block then watch Irv block - very different results.

I don't think he is saying he is the best blocking TE on the team or in the draft. Just that he is not weak at it.

I see Jonah, Irv and JJ all being picked right around the same time late teens to early 20s. Irv maybe to someone like the Seahawks and then Jacobs would be a great pick for the Ravens.

No doubt, but you have to be better than "not weak at it" to be a 1st rounder unless that team is looking for that niche TE role.

I'm one of those old school folks who would prefer that news agencies wait until something happens before they report on it.
The earlier version of that al.com story said, "JJ expected to leave early." Expected by whom? The more honest headline would have been "I, the sports journalist, expect JJ to leave early," but that headline would have looked silly, so they used passive voice to hoid the actor and get the headline.

Well said.

I think it would be cool to see Irv get drafted by the Saints, if he lasts until the last pick in round one. I remember when his dad was drafted by the Saints in round one out of ND. The local stations kept showing the same clip of him dragging 6-7 guys down the field with him. The Saints need a good pass catching TE for the offense.

Incidentally, had lunch today with two of my friends. We are all parents at Irv's rival Catholic HS. They both had sons who played against him and I watched him play in person 3x. We all agreed we are amazed at the success he had a Bama as he didn't appear to be this great standout in HS. What do I know anyway? I thought the same about a kid who was playing QB and being recruited as a safety that graduated at the same time as my wife's brother did from our local public HS. I went to many of those games back in the day. That kid - Ed Reed. He turned out to be pretty good.

As soon as I hit post I remembered the Saints don't have a 1. We have a 2, a 5, two 6s and two 7s
