Over the years of seeing many different coaching changes at Alabama and other schools here is a list of things that I have observed of what not to do when hiring (or firing) a coach:

1) Don't let the players hire the coach
2) Don't let the fans hire the coach
3) Don't let the previous coach hire his replacement
4) Don't let the media hire the coach
5) Don't hire a coach based on what 18 year kids (recruits) may or may not do.
6) Don't hire a coach just because he had 1 good season at some mid-major program

I'm there are other items that could be added to this list. The main point is hire the best AD possible and give him the freedom and resources to do his job.

Agreed and this is my thought. Some mid-major guys work out but it seems most do not. Easy to get a 3* guy who is in your program for 4 yrs that was told by the Power 5 conference teams he was not good enough to live and die for a coach and play all out every play. It's different when he is trying to get 4* and 5* guys that think they hung the moon to always play hard and do everything they say.

I would prefer a Power 5 coach with experience come on board similar to what Tennessee and MS State did. Leaning toward Steve Prohm.

I said at the begging of the season that Coach Johnson had a zero chance of losing his job this year. It turns out when you lose your team and choke every time the game is on the line that is not true. I wish Coach Johnson well and hope he has much success in the future. He was a good man and great ambassador for UA.

UA needs a guy who can literally change the culture of basketball at Alabama. I trust Greg Byrne to make the right hire. He knows basketball and will find the right guy. I'd like to have a game changer. Whoever it is, we need him to visit Watford day 1. I hope they find a job for Coach Pettway. No one loves UA more than he does.

................. why you listening to Bilass? (Yes that's an extra "s")

Oh rest assured I do not. I was referencing the tweet about Bryce Drew that was posted just ahead of my post, which is not unlike many of his tweets and thoughts on the game.

Not only does he look down his nose at everything around him, but he also thinks college basketball is as pure as the driven snow or did until all of this stuff came out with the FBI. His response to that was to bash college football because of course that was the proper response.

I guess going 0-19 in league play isn’t a good reason to fire someone.

Saw on AL.com early names being mentioned are:

Steve Prohm - Possibility but, I think we can do better.

Fred Hoiberg - No chance. I think UCLA will be an option as well as NBA jobs.

Kelvin Sampson - Um No! He left OU and IU both on probation and picked up a 5 year show cause on his way out of IU. Not to mention he turns 64 before next season. He will be around what 5 or 6 years at most?

He's done a nice job at NoKy but would still be considered unproven at this point.

May be unproven but he's NIT-tested as a 'Bama basketball status quo kind of coach. On the other hand, should Prohm be the man, the man behind the man would be Iowa State special assistant to the head coach...David Hobbs. Back to the future we go!

al.com is not always the best source for information. I seriously doubt Sampson will be considered.

I asked about Brannon because they've danced twice in 3 years now.
