Who replaces Avery?

After watching Iowa St vs OSU, I’m thinking it’s guaranteed Prohm is our guy. His team just went 11 minutes without scoring a point, so we know he’ll fit our culture well. (Blue font)

Of course Alabama can do better, and if they aren't conducting a search with Prohm fairly low on the list they're doing it wrong. Your alluding to Hoiberg is as good an example as any. He's actually the guy that built the program Prohm inherited, and Hoiberg did demonstrably better. You don't want to get the Les Miles version in this story.

Hoiberg doesn't seem realistic, but he would be the type of guy that would warrant getting rid of Avery I suppose. I've spent my time reviewing lists of realistic candidates, and I come back uninspired. I'm hoping someone comes out of nowhere, or the AD has a trick up his sleeve, because I'm not really enthused by the process of another meandering head basketball coaching search, which is basically how they've all gone since Wimp.

It seems we think we will have "to settle." I'm sure that's a possibility. We have to accept "who" we are in the world of college basketball.

However, I'm optimistic (because that's my nature) that we'll be pleasantly suprised when this process ends. First, the idea that Byrne has been proactive and made a choice and is reported basketball savy is a good thing. Second, there's a report out that he's been given the "green light" to swing for the fences on this means we'll at least explore some big names.

What some are saying about Bama basketball kinda reminds me of what some were saying about Bama football when Moore was after CNS. I just hope this works out half as well as that hiring did.
 
I think we can break this up into three views:
1) Who is "available" to be poached?
2) Who SHOULD we target?
3) Who is a LEGITIMATE candidate?

As I mentioned in a previous post, I don't follow hoops closely enough anymore to care at all what anybody is doing outside T-town, so I have no informed view. However, those of you who do have articulated some ideas but I just don't know which of these fit into my constrained questions above.

Dirt has followed with him at every single stop.

On the last stop he was cited and suspended by the NCAA for several game due to lack of oversight or some such thing for a scandal involving recruits and escorts (hookers).

We do not want Rick Pitino.

1) Sex workers "working" with recruits
2) Liaison with wife of his team's equipment manager in a diner & paid for her abortion
3) Recruiting scandals, title stripped, 4 years of wins vacated.

Probably more but this is what I remember.

He's won "like" Coach Saban as far as the stats & numbers are concerned, but he's done it by being shady, getting caught, and having a scandalous personal life.
 
Donovan makes $3.9/yr through the 2019/2020 season (next season).

His teams have made the playoffs.

Is Alabama going to pay a coach $5 million?

Does Donovan want back into college coaching?

You never know, but it looks bleak if that is your desired coach.

Is Alabama going to pay 8 million to get rid of a coach only to replace him with someone that's never really done anything? I mean if Alabama wants to stick with mediocre, they could just save the money and stuck with it. Paying 8 million for more mediocrity while trying to save money makes not one bit of sense.

Edit: I'll ad this about Pitino, he does seem too tarnished. I want to win as much as the next guy, but Bruce Pearl was available, and while dirty was far cleaner, and Alabama decided to stick with Grant one more year. I could justify going with Pearl, but a Pitino hire would reek of desperation, I'd rather Alabama pony up some big boy money than hire Pitino as anything other than an analyst.

Years ago I remember the Pigpen character in the Charlie Brown comics took a bath and got cleaned up. He stepped outside and immediately got dirty again because he was a magnet for dirt. That is Rick Pitino. He is dirty and will always be dirty. It's his nature. I want UA to have a basketball program that competes for championships at every level but not if it means hiring someone like him. I want to win but not enough to sell my soul to the devil.

I'm just doing a lot of thinking out loud.

I just see three possibilities here.

A: Alabama had no choice and Avery didn't want to stay. In this case, the buyout should be really small and it did actually have to happen. I haven't heard indications this was the case though.
B: This was a kneejerk reaction to a late season collapse, a to quote someone else "had to be done" firing. Problem is, if that's the case it was done with no real replacement lined up. One of those, do something to be doing something moves.
C: This was a big boy move. That this wasn't an emotional reaction, but a calculated response. This means Alabama in the least would be in a position to make a move on a big name, on something that makes that buyout and the associated risks worth it.

I'm obviously hoping for C...

Yeah, that happened to the last two threads I've made on this forum, I guess one every few months is too often.
