Who's C.M. Newton? From Transylvania? Are you kidding me? That'll never work.

Re: Alabama Set to Hire Nate Oats From Buffalo

Thanks! As quick as this went and judging by Byrne's comments on Monday morning: he knew who we wanted from the outset and went to get his guy immediately. The decisiveness of this hire lets you know he was the top candidate all along.
This is what the Mrs. and I were discussing this afternoon after the news broke. He had to be at the top of the list for it to come together this quickly.

Re: Alabama Set to Hire Nate Oats From Buffalo

I know next to nothing about the Xs and Os of basketball, and less than that about Nate Oats.

From what I can glean from this thread, Oats seems like he might be a modern-day Wimp Sanderson. He'll need to be, as it looks like all our talent is looking to leave.

Next year could be a disaster, and might be even if we had Coach K or Izzo or maybe even Wooden. If Oats can't re-recruit some of the guys in the transfer portal, we might be starting a Schaeffer or two.

I'm looking for sound fundamentals, consistent effort, and improvement from both November to March and year to year. Admittedly, that's not a high bar. But we haven't chinned it since Wimp.

There are no riskless options out there for us. Best case, this is CM Newton, v2. A slow, sound building process.

God, I hope you're right. I want to be positive but when I think of this kid going up against Pearl, Howland, Calipari, Barnes, well, "Babe in the Woods" comes to mind.
Wonder how the coaches at 'Zona and Syracuse feel about now?

Byrne hiring Oats this quickly has cost some other coaches a substantial pay raise! I hope he can teach these young players proper basketball fundamentals and getting them to give maximum effort at all times.

If you go back and listen the the presser on Monday, the “geographic footprint” comments show that he indeed was likely to be on top of the list. Byrne basically said “when a UA coach calls a recruit anywhere in the nation, they take the call”. Byrne is convinced recruiting won’t be an issue, but he knew some UA basketball supporters would be wringing their hands that a “guy with southern connections” wasn’t hired.

Again, just because he was at the top of the list doesn’t automatically translate into success.

How do you honestly think this guy will do going against at least 4 very good coaches in the sec and with no better facilities than what we’ve had? Just on facilities alone I think he’s handicapped going out of the gate, I don’t care how good of an actual coach that he is. And yes I know Coleman is going to be “upgraded”.....

My very first thought was "We've already hired a coach? Spend a day away from home and the whole world goes crazy" follow by "Who in the hell is Nate Oats?!"

Been home long enough to read through this thread and watch some videos.

This guy has done a phenomenal job at Buffalo.

He appears to be sharp.

He has "it", whatever "it" is.

CNS is one of those people, too.

I have no idea if Oats will have 1/5 the success of CNS. Time will tell.

But this looks like a good hire who puts a lot of emphasis on character, relationships, and fundamentals.

Welcome, Coach Oats, and Roll Tide!

After actually seeing what he can do, i think we anything, but whiffed. I WAS WRONG,WRONG WRONG. I think he'll change the basketball culture here. He is a much needed jolt of electricity. I think the kids in the transfer portal better get out of the portal and get to work. Itis going to be fun ride. He has already offered a kid off of our radar. Wow, just wow.

FWIW Avery held his own against the top 4... We just kind of played to our competition for the most part, which was a problem. And at first glance, Oats seems like a better coach than Avery. I don't think he's gonna get shredded by any means. Will he make us better? Not sure. But I think worst case we are looking at fringe tourney teams again. And that's just the worst case

Re: Alabama Set to Hire Nate Oats From Buffalo

Trust the Process...this happened quick so I think this was who our AD wanted all along
Has wanted him since March 15, 2018. When Byrne was AD at Arizona. And the following occurred.

No Bull: Buffalo pulls off big upset, knocks off Arizona

BOISE, Idaho -- Inside Buffalo's locker room hung a handwritten sign with two words: Ball Pressure.

Coach Nate Oats knew the Bulls had a shot at beating big, bad Arizona, but only if they could put lots of pressure on Arizona's guards and make them shoot from the perimeter.

It worked to perfection.

Call them the bracket-busting Bulls.

Pushing the pace and hounding Arizona into submission, 13th-seeded Buffalo pulled off the NCAA Tournament's biggest upset of the opening round, rolling to an 89-68 victory over the fourth-seeded Wildcats in the South Region on Thursday night.

Re: Alabama Set to Hire Nate Oats From Buffalo

Seriously, do you even watch Basketball? Ask ANYONE in the profession about Nate Oats. He is going to be THE next big coach. Might I introduce you to the football page?

Introduce him to this:

Analysis: Is Buffalo’s Nate Oats the run-and-gun coach UNLV needs?

"It’s because of the work done by Bulls head coach Nate Oats. In just four years, the 44-year-old Oats has turned Buffalo into must-see TV every time his team plays. You may remember the Bulls from their absolute trouncing of Arizona in last year’s NCAA tournament, when they ran the No. 4-seeded Wildcats off the floor, 89-68, but since Oats has been calling the shots Buffalo has played every game at that same frenetic pace."

Best case? Coach Newton only went to 2 tourneys....
