This is what the Mrs. and I were discussing this afternoon after the news broke. He had to be at the top of the list for it to come together this quickly. Thanks! As quick as this went and judging by Byrne's comments on Monday morning: he knew who we wanted from the outset and went to get his guy immediately. The decisiveness of this hire lets you know he was the top candidate all along.
God, I hope you're right. I want to be positive but when I think of this kid going up against Pearl, Howland, Calipari, Barnes, well, "Babe in the Woods" comes to mind.Who's C.M. Newton? From Transylvania? Are you kidding me? That'll never work.
Wonder how the coaches at 'Zona and Syracuse feel about now?God, I hope you're right. I want to be positive but when I think of this kid going up against Pearl, Howland, Calipari, Barnes, well, "Babe in the Woods" comes to mind.

Byrne basically said “when a UA coach calls a recruit anywhere in the nation, they take the call”. Byrne is convinced recruiting won’t be an issue, but he knew some UA basketball supporters would be wringing their hands that a “guy with southern connections” wasn’t hired. This is what the Mrs. and I were discussing this afternoon after the news broke. Kiss of DeathFWIW, our AD approves.

Greene worked with him in Buffalo.
Again, just because he was at the top of the list doesn’t automatically translate into success. If you go back and listen the the presser on Monday, the “geographic footprint” comments show that he indeed was likely to be on top of the list. FWIW Avery held his own against the top 4... We just kind of played to our competition for the most part, which was a problem. And at first glance, Oats seems like a better coach than Avery. I don't think he's gonna get shredded by any means. Will he make us better? Not sure. But I think worst case we are looking at fringe tourney teams again. And that's just the worst caseAgain, just because he was at the top of the list doesn’t automatically translate into success.
How do you honestly think this guy will do going against at least 4 very good coaches in the sec and with no better facilities than what we’ve had? Just on facilities alone I think he’s handicapped going out of the gate, I don’t care how good of an actual coach that he is. And yes I know Coleman is going to be “upgraded”.....
Has wanted him since March 15, 2018. When Byrne was AD at Arizona. And the following occurred.Trust the Process...this happened quick so I think this was who our AD wanted all along

No Bull: Buffalo pulls off big upset, knocks off Arizona
BOISE, Idaho -- Inside Buffalo's locker room hung a handwritten sign with two words: Ball Pressure.
Coach Nate Oats knew the Bulls had a shot at beating big, bad Arizona, but only if they could put lots of pressure on Arizona's guards and make them shoot from the perimeter.
It worked to perfection.
Call them the bracket-busting Bulls.
Pushing the pace and hounding Arizona into submission, 13th-seeded Buffalo pulled off the NCAA Tournament's biggest upset of the opening round, rolling to an 89-68 victory over the fourth-seeded Wildcats in the South Region on Thursday night.

Introduce him to this:Seriously, do you even watch Basketball? Ask ANYONE in the profession about Nate Oats. He is going to be THE next big coach. Might I introduce you to the football page?

Thanks. My bad. But not as bad as anyone on here thinking Oats is a HS coach. And doesn't change the date when Byrne first wanted him. You can bet he was watching that game.Byrne was the AD at Bama in 2017.
Best case? Coach Newton only went to 2 tourneys....I know next to nothing about the Xs and Os of basketball, and less than that about Nate Oats.
From what I can glean from this thread, Oats seems like he might be a modern-day Wimp Sanderson. He'll need to be, as it looks like all our talent is looking to leave.
Next year could be a disaster, and might be even if we had Coach K or Izzo or maybe even Wooden. If Oats can't re-recruit some of the guys in the transfer portal, we might be starting a Schaeffer or two.
I'm looking for sound fundamentals, consistent effort, and improvement from both November to March and year to year. Admittedly, that's not a high bar. But we haven't chinned it since Wimp.
There are no riskless options out there for us. Best case, this is CM Newton, v2. A slow, sound building process.
