Let's Do This: 2020 QB Discussion

Not only will he have a two year head start in the offense. He'll also be 22 years old when the season starts. Joe Burrow was 22 (turned 23 in October 2019) last season. There's a big difference between an 18 year old, fresh out of HS, and a 22 year old who's been in the football program going on four years AND in a college atmosphere for 4 years. That doesn't need to be discounted.
I do think you're right on target...the proven quality will start PROVIDED he doesn't turn the ball over. That's what got us beat in the AU game...CNS hates turnovers just about as much as I do.

I have to believe so much of that was a fluke. He's not done before or since, even though we're only talking about 3 games. But even in mop up. It was a fluke of the moment, environment, and everything else. That is a voodoo vortex down there and believe me, I hope we conquer it with prejudice before Coach Saban retires.

Lots of "can't miss" qb prospects & "can't miss" prospects in general, do, in fact "miss". While Young looks good as a high school qb, I'll wait until he actually proves it against college players. If he, or anyone else, gets their dander up because they want playing time, they are free to leave. Honestly, I hope Jones works out well, #5 takes his place when he leaves & so on. It usually doesn't work out the way I would like, though.:)

I promise you, Bryce Young is a can’t miss QB. And by that I mean if he went to Clemson or Ohio State, LSU.. you would miss him.

High Schools now run legitimate offenses. That means that the QBs show up with skills that translate immediately. Add the difference in the way that QBs are coached now in HS - with real QB coaching and clinics - and you get guys ready to contribute at even the biggest schools right away. There have always been a few who could play right away, but now there are probably 10-15 every year ready to play.
That is all true but do not forget about the "it" factor. You never know what you are going to do when a 240# 6'4" backer with 4.5 speed is torpedoing at you. It takes time to catch up to game speed of college. I saw Bryce get sacked in the all-star game underestimating the speed of his peers the other day.

Barring injury, I would be very surprised if Mac is not the starter in 2020.

Bryce Young Is no doubt highly talented, but I join Padreuf and Buzz in pointing out the difference between a 22-year-old starting his fourth year in the program vs. an 18-year-old hitting campus yesterday.

Also, Lia will have something to say about who the backup is.

For the record, I hope Young tears up the SEC for three solid years. But he has to prove it in action before I’m willing to anoint him the second coming of Tua.

I would also point out that this time last year, a lot of posters were burying Mac and anointing Lia as the heir-apparent to Tua. That idea gets crickets now.

There is no controversy unless people outside the program who aren’t at practice create one with uninformed statements. Let’s wait until fall camp to have even the remotest idea as to who can do what, and when.

Is Lia able to redshirt or did he play in to many games? Why I’m asking is that if he transfers after next season would he have 2 or 3 years of eligibility left? He probably stays next year but if Young comes in and does what is expected I wouldn’t be surprised if he left transfers after spring training. Just from an eligibility standpoint. Transfer to say Miami and still have 4 years of eligibility assuming he is able to redshirt for this past season.

Yeah, it's interesting to hear some people express doubts, caution, or whatever you want to call it about Young's talent. Sounds like some of the same concerns people had about Tua when he came on campus. I like to take the contrarian viewpoint in cases like this where if there's a healthy amount of skepticism of a players ability it means he's probably going to be a superstar.

Lia played in 5 games, did not redshirt.

In a perfect world, Mac Jones starts because he is ahead of the game and we get to red-shirt Young. Mac Jones plays like he did minus the two picks in his last two games all year and he declares for the NFL. That leaves us with Lia and Young battling it out for the start in 21'. Loser most likely decides to transfer but by then we have another QB in the room being developed.

Good post...on that last point...with Tua it was what was coming from the informed people in the program that got us, the fans, stirred up.

I suspect the same will happen with Bryce Young if he is going to truly be special. We'll hear the "insiders" start dropping hints if he's pushing Jones for real PT.

With Lia, that never happened partly because no one was pushing Tua for real PT. It also might be because Mac Jones was getting better and we've already seen he's no chopped liver. But I also suspect it is because Lia never really pushed MJ for the #2 spot. It doesn't mean he not good or won't ever be good; it probably means he isn't a generational player like his brother.

:) Just to be different ...

• Lia takes a commanding lead of the 1s during spring forcing Mac to pursue other options

• Tyson becomes the backup, having BY to redshirt the season

One name Tua didn't mention in his press conference regarding FUTURE QB's was Tyson. Did he just forget to list him or does he know something that some of us do not know?

  • Thank You

There are still posters on here burying Mac or they have him starting and getting benched. I don't understand it.

You're right about Lia -- he never truly pushed Mac for the backup spot.

I can't say how I know this, but I know: Early on, the coaches felt that Lia was further behind Mac than Mac was behind Tua. Don't know if that changed any by the end of the year, but given Mac's improving performances, I'd guess not.

Experience in the program, age and maturity matter. They can't overcome generational talent, but they can hold it off for a while.

I think it will play out like Clemson last year. Young will be too good to sit on the bench. Don’t want to waste a year like we did with Tua.

No disrespect to Jones but I just think Young is going to be too good to sit.

FYI: This doesn’t mean that I am a Jones hater.

Jones is the starter without question. Bryce Young will have to prove he is better than Jones. And heading into the 2020 season, I doubt Young will beat him out. Tua could not beat out Jalen, Bryce will not beat out Jones.

To redshirt a player with Young’s ability is just a waste. He is a 3 year player if he meets expectations. I am sure Saban will have a good assessment of him by the end of spring practice.
I am excited about the prospects regardless. Looking forward to A-Day!
