IDEA OF THE DAY: EXTREMIST VIOLENCE

The Anti-Defamation League counted 42 killings in the United States last year that were committed by political extremists. Of those 42, right-wing extremists committed 38.
That continued a pattern. Over the past decade, right-wing extremists have committed more than 75 percent of killings by extremists.
Another such killing took place this week, according to investigators in New Jersey. They say that Roy Den Hollander fatally shot Daniel Anderl, the 20-year-old son of Esther Salas, a federal judge, and wounded Salas’s husband. Den Hollander identified himself as part of an “anti-feminist” movement doing battle with a cabal of “feminazis.” His online screeds also included racist language.
Mark Pitcavage of the Anti-Defamation League points out that extremists on both ends of the political spectrum have committed violence over the years. On the left, the Weather Underground and some Black nationalist groups did so in the 1960s and ’70s, as did some animal-rights and environmental extremists in the 1990s. More recently, a left-wing gunman shot a Republican congressman and three other people at a baseball practice in 2017.
But that case has proved to be the exception in recent years.
Right-wing violence — by white supremacists, anti-abortion extremists and others — began to mount in the 1980s and ’90s. It began rising again around 2008, around the same time as the election of the first Black president, Pitcavage said.
“This should no longer come as a shock to anyone,” Jonathan Greenblatt, the A.D.L.’s chief executive, said earlier this year. “Lawmakers, law enforcement and the public need to recognize the grave and dangerous threat posed by violent white supremacy. We cannot begin to defeat this deadly form of hatred if we fail to even recognize it.”

I think that most recognize the violent actions that bigots have always taken in America. From abortion clinic violence to lynchings, they have always been a problem in America. But all of these extremist groups are dangerous.

Give them an environment in which they feel empowered and they become a greater danger, and Trump has done so for those on the far right. Put someone like Sanders in office and we might see something similar from those on the far left.

As a younger man I reacted to controversy with emotionalism and anger the same way that Bernie appears to do now. In his case because of his age it must be an act.

I grew to painfully understand how my emotions negatively effected the people closest to me both friends and family.

Bernie of course should understand that but perhaps his political strategy is aimed to the exact polar opposite constituency to Trump. I am not a political scientist but do understand how destructive both could be to the country.

great piece in the Atlantic today

Isn't this the most desperate act of a man who only had to follow the advice of experts in combating the virus and likely be head to head with Biden today. Instead here we are attempting to rekindle class warfare. The dying act of a party that has no future as it currently exist.

To those who still support Trump, seriously, please enlighten me as to why you still like his policies and what good things he has accomplished in 3 1/2 years and what you will be looking forward to in the next 4. Lets skip SCOTUS appointments as Mitch had as much or more to do with it than him. Other than that, what?
Its now been over 72 hours (for those struggling with the Trump competency test that's 3 days) since this question was posed and so far crickets, nana, zilch. Nobody can come up with any answer! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

By putting that qualifier in there you are directing your message to a really, really small audience. I haven't seen a post from someone I would consider a "Trump Supporter" on this board in weeks.
They are too busy trying to start political debates on the football board. Its funny to see one post on the football board and it inevitably comes over here and they no longer want to talk about it anymore.

I really don't see the point of asking folks if they are a Drumpf supporter over here anymore because they don't want to debate anymore since they are clearly the minority of the country.

The qualifier isn't really a qualifier, its actually a bit redundant. I'm guessing there are many lurkers here who are embarrassed to admit support. It hasn't been that long ago that this board was basically right wing. Some of the liberal posters actually left in disgust. I thought I might at least get a reply from our friend Baz.🤔

they were popping up regularly every 2-3 weeks to say tick-tock but have been relatively quiet lately.

i guess it does say something that a somewhat "free-for-all" political board on an alabama fan page is not overrun with trumpies, and is considered "liberal"

Like I said, they have moved to the football board where they get their three posts in before the thread inevitably rolls over here where they lose interest. Look at how many have came over here in the last week. Ive met only a few Trumpers that can actually defend themselves against challenges to their position without tossing off the wall crap our insults.

Its like that moronic one he posted about 4 years of Biden will be chaos while using videos of chaos in his administration.

I used the Richard Scrushy comparison in either this thread or another but I think it fits perfectly. Scrushy and Trump had an all star team to pull the upset the first time, and Scrushy and Trump both got rid of that all star team to try to pull a second upset.

You have to realize that there is an entire group of people who will vote for Trump come November, but don't consider themselves Trump supporters.

Millions of them - they are trump supporters, but unwilling to admit it in mixed company. This is typical of bigots.

ETA - That is an area in which I respect Bazza. He owns it. I may not agree with his politics, but he is honest and unapologetic about them.

and this is where I will disagree. He's been here long enough that he knows better but chooses to support a terrible human. To me that is worse than the blindly ignorant supporters
