That's just too weird for me. Notre Dame too. I know we're going for world domination here, but I'd prefer the Big Ten stay the Big Ten and the SEC the SEC. Even if the number hasn't been right in years and we've long since left the southeastern borders behind.

Notre Dame to the ACC isn't a terrible stretch... but they really belong in the Big Ten as well if they ever do break down and join a conference.
By the time this is all over and done with the SEC is looking to become a league of its own, free of the NCAAs influence. Then it will create new conferences or divisions as needed.

This is similar to what I’ve been thinking the whole time. This is the beginnings of the power players in college football giving the NCAA half a peace sign and telling them to pound sand. Folks are tired of them and how they do business.

What’s amusing is Barrett Sallee opted to go with this hasn’t happened and Twitter isn’t real life.

He said this on Twitter of course, as if he knows every contact that ever happens. I’m not saying it did, I’m just saying that because he said it didn’t doesn’t necessarily mean he has a clue at all.

I'd tend to think the idea of Clemson and FSU reaching out is legit. There was supposed to have been some contact between the Big 12 and those two programs years ago. Those two teams are unhappy with the basketball oriented power structure (and FSU in particular doesn't seem to be doing as well financially as they'd like).

If we are really headed towards a power mega conference what do we do about Vandy?
Unless you reform the entire SEC, there is nothing you can do. There will be legacy schools. There also of course has to be someone there to soak up the losses. This is one reason I think the idea of just trying to snag every team currently enjoying success in football is sheer madness. Every conference game will result in one winner and one loser. If you no longer have FCS cupcake games and the like, you will have even more losses on top of that. If you end up adding FSU, Clemson, Oklahoma, Texas and another conference game for example, that will mean a lot of losses.

Teams we think of now as football powers won't be. So whether or not they belong in the conference has to rely on more than success in football. Not just that but you strategically almost have to try to add a couple programs (like the Big 10 did with Rutgers and Maryland) that will lose all the time so you pad the stats of the other teams. That way the rest feel like winners and their fans still pay attention.

Barrett Sallee is a moron and tries to be an insider but rarely breaks things that people didn’t already know.

I think Clemson and Florida St have explored the idea but I don’t think they are as far along as Texas and Oklahoma were. I think most powers are in “wait and see” mode because things are about to get interesting in the next Few weeks.

To say they haven’t talked to the SEC is just unlikely as to say they are on their way.

Vanderbilt is by far the most worthless program in the SEC. they don’t even sell out baseball.
If I had the magic power to just go out and make a few moves (without touching the Big 10) it would probably be something like this.

Remove Vanderbilt, Miss. State (one school in-state has to go, neither are worth much), and Auburn because I'm vindictive and they are somewhat redundant. Then I would add Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Virginia.

The SEC would have added two massive brands and 25 million in population without without really disrupting things for the remaining teams. Of course that can't happen but one could dream.

As far as FSU/Clemson I do think there has been some communicating and it all sounds very un-Slive like. The SEC under him was focused on the states of Virginia and North Carolina and he was looking at expanding the SEC's brand into new territory. I liked the idea of four super-conferences with Texas and Oklahoma going out west, I always have. That not happening. I dislike the idea of 0 new territory expansions a lot though.

Miss St is far more valuable to the SEC than Ole Miss.

This has been a sore spot with me from day one. Conversation I had (gist of it) with a FSU bozo (okay, he was actually a good friend) in the fall of 1992:

Me: I have ZERO respect for FSU. Chance to join the SEC. No. Why not? Will actually have to play someone. Miami, too. Screw 'em.

Him: Why would they do that? Miami keeps more money on their own and doesn't have to share it.

Me: Then why did the join a conference, the Big East? Why did FSU join the SEC?

Him: Better money deal.

Me: Try "didn't want to face a slaughterhouse schedule."

And then about 15 years ago, BOBBY BOWDEN ADMITTED this!!!

Think of it like this. Since 9/11 happened, FSU has only been a big deal during the Jameis Winston years JUST LIKE Texas has only been a big deal during the Vince Young years. To be fair, FSU was A LOT better than Texas 1987-200o, but still.

I agree with posters citing Notre Dame based solely on the fact they have folks across the country - but even then it isn't like it once was, either.
And Auburn during the Cam Newton (he pretended not to know) years?

I hear his latest story is that the SEC is expanding to 12 teams, and the addition of South Carolina and Arkansas means that there's gonna be a conference championship game!!
He tries so desperately to be Ken Rosenthal
and Joe Klatt’s love child. I swear most Braves fans know more inside knowledge than him and he vacations with Alex. The guy really has no purpose in sports journalism.

There remains, among the ND faithful, significant resentment of the Big 10 for anti-Catholic bias in the early days. ND is loyal to USCw and service academies because they scheduled ND when Big 10 schools refused to. I wouldn’t say the issue can’t be overcome, but it’s not as simple as geographic logic either…
