It has been said on Tidefans ever since CNS arrived, regardless of who was DC, "remember that this is Saban's defense". What does that really mean? This is speculation and not meant as an indictment of CNS or CPG, but do we have two coaches trying to coach the same defense? Is Golding, yielding to CNS even though it may not be the way he would to it. Are the players getting mixed information and signals from Saban and Golding. There just seems to be a really serious disconnect between the defensive coaches on the sidelines and the players on the field.

I think it’s as simple as that. Whatever he knows in X’s and O’s that coach Saban fell in love with hasn’t translated to the field. Looking at his position group specifically, we’ve witnessed some of the worst middle linebacker play since Saban arrived. Early on this was tough to gauge due to injuries and inexperience, but I don’t feel like I’ve seen much improvement out of Harris over 3 seasons and Henry T has struggled at times this season as well after a strong year in Pruit’s defense. The times have changed but the way we recruit no reason we can’t have a McClain, Mosley, or Foster in the middle of our defense.
Think Pruit has sat out long enough to return to us or is his reputation shot after Tn. did a hack job on it?

I think right now, we need to kill the Pruitt noise. he is not coming back to Alabama for long long time.
Tennessee and Pruitt are in middle of a nasty situation that could end up in court. What to expect if Jeremy Pruitt sues Tennessee Vols over buyout (knoxnews.com) We won't know what the agreement will be behind the door for a while, but after that is handled, he still has to deal with NCAA, should they come after him. Right now they haven't, but compliance offices won't touch him until that is resolved. It won't be resolved any time soon.

Pruitt is a good DC Coach, and if he is able to come back to college football, I don't know if it'll be at Alabama... compliance office again.

The difference is BY could easily be called upon to be a runner - he's a stunning athlete. I don't trust Mullen to know where that line is.
This a real valid point in another sense. Young seems to know where that line is, unfortunately Tua doesn't. I think it could very well wreck Tua's career, and it cost him dearly at Alabama. So I'm with you on the, don't have the small talented passing QB run a lot thing.

It seems like CNS adjusted his type of coaches and players to run the high scoring offense, and was even recruiting the type of players to stop the HUNH offense on defense. He had the right personnel as DC to stop those HUNH offenses until CPG arrived on staff. CPG defensive numbers have not lied over the last 4 years. They are bad compared to Bama standards and it's showing on game days.

Just suppose Golding, O'Brien and Marrone are elsewhere next year.

Honest question, because as frustrated as I've been with the 2021 team, I don't know the answer: Who would realistically come to be Alabama's DC, OC, or OL coach, respectively, and represent a clear upgrade from what we have now?

I see nobody on Florida's, LSU's or USCw's staff worth having. I like tOSU's offense, but no way their OC leaves to come here. Lane Kiffin is really OM's OC, and he's not coming except maybe as HC when Saban hangs it up (and that assumes he's outgrown his off-field proclivities). I'd take Sark back in half an instant, but I don't really think UTw will fire him after only one year. Cincinnati's OL has been pretty stout, acknowledging it's against inferior competition, so maybe there for an OL coach....maybe? Lake is out at UDub, and had some pretty good defenses there, albeit in the Pac-12, prior to becoming example #405987 of the Peter Principle.

There's some talk that Brian Kelly might have done all he can do at Notre Dame, and might be willing to consider one of the prominent openings. So maybe somebody on the ND staff?

The bottom line is: I see our problems, and I'm as frustrated as anybody. But I'm failing my own test of being able to propose a solution.

I'd be most appreciative of specific names. "Anybody would be better than [insert name]" (1) isn't right, and (2) doesn't qualify as a name.

Cannot agree with you more. CJP walked an edge at every place he went when it came to recruiting…..Alabama, FSU, Georgia, and Tennessee. I was more than a little apprehensive when we came back here as DC. I just trusted CNS would keep him under his thumb.
It would be a long time before I could get comfortable with him back in Tuscaloosa after the situation in Knoxville.

Tua‘s bad habits were reenforced in year 2 instead of corrected. Had he had Sark or Daboll year 2 instead of Locks then we probably are 3 out of 4 or 4 out of 4 in the last 4 years in terms of championships.

I have seen people like Pete Golding many times in my career as a scientist. You run across people that give very self assured presentations that are really complex. The general first impression is "Wow this guy is brilliant - I can't exactly follow everything he is saying, but it sure looks impressive". Then as the years go by, you begin to realize that they are not really brilliant at all. They have the same kinds of thoughts that everyone else does, but they are really bad at communicating them. I think Pete snowed CNS with that first presentation, but in fact he is just a really poor communicator.

I would be satisfied with the OL getting fixed. Even if somehow its Marrone that stays and fixes it.
