Great explanation.gotcha, and agree that it's likely Saban will look for someone who is still pretty much "pro-style" in their approach. My real intention was to say that 'pro-style' can really look very different, from guys like Kiffin and Sark, to Daboll and now BOB. All pro-style, but still all very, very different.
I'm somewhat torn on the assessment of the OL. While we certainly had some holes and the overall talent was not what it was in 2020 for sure, I truly believe several things directly attributable to the OC made the situation way worse than it should have been.
- We consistently ran the play clock down to under 5 seconds before getting the snap off due to slow communications down to the field. that means there is almost no advantage to the OL of the DL not knowing the snap count, AND gives the DL more time to recover between plays.
- The overall breadth of the playbook made the schematics of defending us easy. i.e. the other team knew what we are going to do, so could align in the best possible way to try to stop it.
- Our passing game didn't leverage the short and intermediate routes that would get the ball out of the pocket quickly. We had a lot of long developing routes that required the OL to hold their blocks for a long, long time, and then often, the WRs (except for JAMO and Waddle) couldn't get open since the D knew exactly what the route tree was and sat and waited for where guys were supposed to try to break open), so the OL had to hold even longer as Bryce did Bryce things to make magic happen
It would also augur for Kingsbury or someone like him, provided he can also develop the physicality we currently lack.
