Maui wildfires out of control (was: Weather thread...)

One of my favorite towns to visit in Hawaii -- and the Lahaina Grill is one of my favorite restaurants. This is tragic even if no one dies...the town lives on tourism.
don't watch the videos on r/maui one of them clearly shows a dead person on the street in Lahaina. So sad

This makes me sad - I was going to take the wife to Lahaina when we started our exodus. Hopefully they will recover by then but it won’t be the same.
The feel of the place just made it special.

hearing the Banyan Tree is in ashes. Sadly you are right it will never be the same. The wealthy will rebuild the poor will move off island and investors will swarm in an make it a Disney version of what it was. See it in FL after hurricanes and expect the same here

Maybe the report meant the restaurant?
nah I think it was someone speculating based on what was known at the time

for anyone who's not been to Maui the center of Lahaina is this massive amazing tree that takes the entire square. Like a live oak you'd see in Tuscaloosa but if one oak had dozens of trunks. It is honestly breath taking even when you factor in the hippies selling weed under it :) It really is the heart of Lahaina. It surviving is a big, big deal
