Maui wildfires out of control (was: Weather thread...)

I had been puzzled by the apparent lack of forests surrounding the town. You'd think it'd be safe. It appears it originated in the grasslands surrounding the town and spread inward, driven by near hurricane force winds. Here is a shot of the entire area of the fire.

CNBC
it is surrounded by dry grass, or was now the grass is all burnt. Much of it was pineapple and sugar plantations back in the day before minimum wage laws made the pineapple producers learn that they could grow far cheaper in the Philippines and Costa Rica.

There was still a pineapple farm in Maui. Don't remember how close to Lahaina it was but it was there in 2017.

Ninety-three people have been confirmed killed in the Maui fire that razed the historic town of Lahaina, marking the most deadly US fire in a century.
The number of victims could rise "significantly", Hawaii Governor Josh Green warned on Saturday, as forensic work continues to identify the victims.
Hundreds remain unaccounted for while hundreds of others fill shelters across Maui after fleeing the flames.

So far, they have covered only 3% of the search area, said a visibly emotional Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.

A lot of displaced people. Seems like a couple cruise ships would be helpful to temporarily house those who need it......

We also have two hospital ships. The Comfort and the Mercy.

I read that all the cruise lines have removed Maui as a destination port since the fire disaster.

I really don't understand why we couldn't have some help from either of these two resources for the folks who have been displaced.

Whatever the cost is - we have plenty of government funds to cover what private funds won't cover.

🤷‍♂️

Apparently, the electricity couldn't be shut down in grids where wind was a concern. Also heard that water pumps were not on dedicated power lines, thus compounding the issue of cutting power.

From the linked article:
It’s official: the Hawaii wildfires are the deadliest in American history. At least 92 people died during the disaster, with another 1,000 missing.

Even more disturbing is that residents of Maui, the location of the fire, said the emergency warning system was never activated

1,000 still missing?

Goodness, that's awful. Hopefully many are simply displaced or double-counted...

According to NBC:

Specialist teams are searching through Maui's charred ruins for the missing, but only 3% of the affected area had been searched with cadaver dogs as of Sunday.

3%

doesn't even count the homeless in the area that were numerous. Lot of one way ticket people get there and scrape by living outside or in cars.
Yeah, it surprised me how many homeless people there was in Maui. I remember thinking it wasn't the worst place too be homeless.
