Maui wildfires out of control (was: Weather thread...)

nah I think it was someone speculating based on what was known at the time

for anyone who's not been to Maui the center of Lahaina is this massive amazing tree that takes the entire square. Like a live oak you'd see in Tuscaloosa but if one oak had dozens of trunks. It is honestly breath taking even when you factor in the hippies selling weed under it :) It really is the heart of Lahaina. It surviving is a big, big deal
Banyan trees are beautiful. I love to look at them when I'm in SE Asia. They're revered in Buddhism.

Good friend of mine lived in Kahana for a few years - about 5 miles north of Front Street, Lahaina .

He relocated to Florida about a year ago.

Told me today:

"There has been a drought going in there for a number of years, and one of our reasons for leaving was it was getting so dry and brown, losing the tropical island look in many areas, and I anticipated that there would be more fires, as one burned very close to our house two years ago."

I had been puzzled by the apparent lack of forests surrounding the town. You'd think it'd be safe. It appears it originated in the grasslands surrounding the town and spread inward, driven by near hurricane force winds. Here is a shot of the entire area of the fire.
