BREAKING Buchner to start- per reports

This is what I dont get. Why we didnt attempt to land a big fish out of the transfer portal is beyond me. Hartman at ND was obviously the biggest fish, but even spencer sanders who transferred out of Oklahoma State.

I felt bad for the kid honestly during the texas game. He wasn't ready and it showed.

What makes you think the staff didn't make an attempt?

When one of the DL is probably the best DL in the country its not impossible. Add in the fact that there is probably another 1st round draft pick... add to that, that its clear after the first two drives they had ZERO threat or fear that we could throw the ball successfully and its a good recipe for disaster.

Keep in mind our 1st set of runs by RB's went like this, first quarter runs before the Texas Adjustment was made:
+9
+5
+15
+1
+5
+1
+6
0

I see 8 carries for 42 yards. Not awful. From there it went downhill.
We were supposed to have one of the best OLs in the country too.

It is indeed kind of interesting that at the START last week we were running the ball well. I distinctly remember thinking, " We can run on these guys. "
Bama's OL was gashing sexat until they realized they could load the box and dare JM to beat them.

Bama gained 65 yards on the first nine plays on the ground (7.2 ypc). Starting with the third possession (beginning of the second quarter), sexat started loading up to stop the run.

And i think we do have a very good one. That will continue to improve. 1st Q no one was talking about the play of our line. We had run the ball for 42 yards, not counting the QB, so we were probably closer to 60-70 yards rushing.

Then the cat was let out of the bag that we couldnt throw.

I dont think people realize that when a team zeros in on the fact you cant throw there is very little to be done. This OL isnt the glory days OL. Football has changed. When a good football team wants to take away the run, they can do so. This typically leads to big openings in the passing game... unfortunately for us... we werent able to take advantage of this.

Again I say.... before texas knew we couldnt throw. We were running successful. We actually drove the ball from our 3 to midfield before JM threw a pick. Then in series two we moved the ball from our 25 to their 25.

I'm glad Buchner is getting the start, but just like game 1 it may to be hard to tell if it's an improvement based upon the level of the opponent. Hopefully he has a good game and gets the start vs. OM also because we really need a permanent starter in place to begin SEC play.

Good that the staff recognized a change was needed. I still think Milroe adds a dimension if used in short yardage/goal line etc...he is too good an athlete to just sit on the sideline all game. I hope he takes this as a challenge and continues to work and improve. He seems like a great kid.

The plus side to him starting at this point is he potentially gets an entire game under his belt to get some timing with the wide receivers, etc. There is no substitute for actual play on the field. Hopefully he can be ready for Ole Miss if he is indeed the answer.

Idk. Milroe's strength as a passer is throwing deep. I think he would be pretty limited in the Redzone as a passer. Yes he can run but even that he does better in space.

I'm hoping you're looking at it the right way, and I'm not.

As Nick Saban said when Jalen Milroe opened the season as the starting QB, it didn’t mean he was the starter in perpetuity. This is now Tyler Buchner’s chance to show what he can do. Ty Simpson could also play in this game depending on how things go. Milroe still in equation too.

Interesting that he mentions Ty coming in before saying anything about Milroe. Does that mean Ty is now the #2 guy behind Buchner?

The QB has absolutely nothing to do with 3 DL overwhelming 5 OL immediately after the snap.

This happened far more often than some of you seem willing to acknowledge.
This. The middle of the OL was a sieve. 5 sacks, 12 pressures from mostly 3 and 4-man rushes. Matt Wyatt had one play in his film study video where Mclaughlin and Dalcourt were beaten in a combo block by a single DL. Earlier in thread someone said that Mclaughlin may be dealing with an injury which might explain his early troubles.

The QB/OL blame game feels like a chicken-and-egg argument to me. Yes, Milroe made some terrible decisions, but the OL also never gave him a chance to develop a rhythm and build some confidence. And the offensive scheme installed by the coaches didn't play to JM's strengths either. A team failure.

If the staff wants to try another QB (I'm guessing Buchner starting is a Tommy Rees thing), they should also experiment with OL personnel as well.

Our CFP starts now meaning we can’t afford to lose from here on out.

There needed to be a change imo just to see what we have behind Milroe and if Buchner is indeed that guy that doesn’t turn the ball over in crucial situations in big games then so be it.

Regardless of whose the QB though, the OL needs to play better and I hope McLaughlin can fix his snapping issues.
That is one of the biggest issues on the team. As a result no explosives in the run game and inconsistent play at QB.

Well said and let’s pray Buchner is over his turnover prone play. Does anyone have his stats to post from last year?

I don't think there's any chance Bama achieves its team goals for 2023 if JM continues to be the starter.

He has great athletic skills but he also has great voids in his ability to manage the offense.
Play calling or system ( See Sark or Kiffin) and how they accentuate any QB’s strengths.

That was absolutely embarrassing to watch. I hope those guys were embarrassed this week when they watched film, especially after all of the mighty talking about how great they were going to be. It would have been one thing if Texas had sent multiple blitzers, but they were getting to the QB quickly with just three or four guys. How does that happen? It was a very, very, very weak performance from the line.
