Is there a Correlation Between New Clock Rules and Low Scoring?

Just watching highlights from yesterday, it seems so.

I imagine someone who's into analytics will do a study about this.

I still think offense wins games more today than ever before, but there's just fewer possessions in most games now.

I hate the new rule!

It's only Week 3 so there's probably not enough data to reach any conclusions.

There's also the wildcard of how coaches adjust. That's not likely to be known until after at least a couple seasons.

I don't think Coach Saban's shift to old school anti-tempo football is a coincidence.
I think so, especially coupled with the "run the ball" emphasis right now. You don't have as many possessions, so you are careful to make the most of each possession. Lots of low scoring, close games, especially among the better teams.

FTR, it was week 4 and now going on to week 5.

Yes, I think so. Outside of turnovers, teams do not have the number of snaps which result in less series. You cannot waste series and expect to "make them up" later. IMO, it will force better more efficient execution rather than trying to get productive plays from mass production of snaps, I.e. the Chip Kelly Gus Bus approach.

Well, as much as "we" (maybe not you specifically) complain about how the rule changes keep putting offenses at a competitive advantage, I'm not going to complain that much about it.

I think so. Every drive is more valuable because you can't afford to punt 5 times a game knowing clock is running. It forces more teams to go for it on 4th down often. Yesterday we left 21 points on the field. The interceptions, bad snap and one drive where it was a mess. Accomplish that and it's a huge blow out and Bama scores over 40 points.

This is probably the correct answer for now.

I wonder if anyone has any data on it so far

With the new.clock rule OM didn't really have.much.of an opportunity to mount a comeback.in the 4th quarter. But that would apply to us as well. If we head into the 4th behind we are in trouble.

You really are only assured 3 possession per half With the new clock rules. Turnovers are absolute killers now as OM.foumd out yesterday.

I think it's hangover from talent leaving top programs through the portal and incoming replacements not assimilating quickly enough.

Iowa had 33 offensive snaps yesterday - in the entire game.

Of course, they could have had 100 and still wouldn't have scored, but...
They are averaging just over 21 pts per game.

Their OC is the son of their HC

It’s written into his contract that they must average 24 points per game or he’s fired at the end of the year. There are some caveats I think. He gets credit based upon number of wins too. And he also gets credit for NOTs.

But it will be interesting to watch play out.

Any school that doesn't fire their OC after yesterday's performance by Iowa's offense isn't serious about football.

But in all honesty, I've no idea how Kirk Ferentz has kept this job as long as he has. Heck, I've been saying THAT for a decade or more. He has to have incriminating evidence against multiple people - it's the only explanation.
