First let me premise this by saying I feel really bad about the loss today, but support these guys 100 percent. I like what I see out on the field and YOUNG teams lose games like this.....

Wasn't it last year that Coach Shula was preaching to the kids to have that Killer Instinct and finish teams off. I know I remember him saying something like that. I support him 100%, but he needs to walk the walk if he is going to talk the talk. Instill the same philosophy in the coaching staff and this team will be a very good ballclub.

This is not a quote from a coach with a killer instinct....

“We were just going to put it in the middle and go home,” offensive coordinator Dave Rader said of the strategy.

Seniors should be relied upon to make critical plays, not Freshmen. I don't know, Leigh had been good up until today. Dang..... five hours later and I still dont really know how to feel about this loss. I'm PO'D, but still believe these guys can go on to have a really good season.

ROLLLLLLLLLLL DANNNNNNNG TIIIDEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

I agree, however,CMS has never showed any different. I'm afraid we have what we have, and this was just one terrible job and reminds me of the Arkie game 2 years ago in Hogville where we had 4th and 1 ft and punted from the 35 yard line. However,we still had too many chances to win this game and he refused to take the necessary steps to do so.I'm just sick to see so little improvement in on the field coaching. We need a real OC.

Well, they did get to go home, albeit losers.

BTW, I am finally home. Can't believe that we lost today. Kines had the defense ready, but he can't win all of the games for us.

I called for 8 total wins this year (incuding the Bowl game), and we can still do that, though I expect to only be 7 - 5 at the end of the season.

Got to get ready for Florida. And for those that say that Florida is beatable, I agree - but we seem to be pretty beatable ourselves.

Re: Dave Radar postgame comment!

Rader's coments should get some heads rollin, and some fire lit under someones @$$!!!!!

I dont know what the time on the clock was when this stratagy was formed but, it was the wrong one. (hindsight) maybe they didnt want to get KB or DJHall hurt like 4rothro last year. Who knows?

But that was the WRONG comment to make.

It is hard to get the context of what Rader said.

Is he saying he wanted to just put it up the middle and go home? Or is he expressing frustration?

I find the context crystal clear. In fact, it has been an attribute/characteristic of the staff since day one. In fact, that characteristic has been seen in a few other coaches the last 3 decades.

If there is one thing that doesn't translate easily, it is an NFL mentality forced upon a college environment. Whether it be sticking with your "one player," (see the reps back up QB's had in camps/practices when BC went down) to the approach seen in overtime games.

I don't expect CMS thought Tiffin would miss another kick. And, considering the psyche found with kickers (especially those of Tiffin's age) it is understandable why he continued with LT.

I find this just another example of the ole' "NFL hangover." Perkins had it. Stallings had it. However, you can find a group of coaches that have made successful transitions from the NFL to college that haven't had that proverbial hangover.

With the QB situation I mentioned earlier...Shula learned from that one.

The question that remains...just how large is his learning curve? At what point (progress) is he?

____

On a side note: I find the bottom line would look a lot like this...if LT made the FG in overtime, 90% of these threads wouldn't be on any forum. There would be talk of the OL / running game, as there should be. The playcalling, in my opinion, was pretty sound during regulation.

Well, much to the distain of people on the forum I was making complaints over play calling in scoring position leading up to the game. I felt it could be the difference in the game and I was mocked. I feel it was the difference in the game and the only difference I see now is I'm not being mocked. I agree that had things turned out differently most people wouldn't complain and I would be in the minority but I don't think it makes the concerns any less valid.

I can't say the play calling was bad, I think the offense has been fine all season EXCEPT for lacking the "killer instinct". I alluded to numbers backing this up before the game, including detailing predictable run plays in scoring position and a trend for Alabama's offense to score less than the yardage should account for. I think the offense and play calling looked fine most of the game, leading up to getting close to scoring a TD and instead settling for a kick (and running something like ten straight running plays). I think the "phoning it in" attitude that offense seems to get once they get in the 30 is a serious problem. I thought it was before the game, I think it is a problem now and I don't think we've seen the last of the harm it can cause. JPW has the "killer instinct" but they have to give him a chance to make the plays.

To clarify here's my opinion. Once you get in the 30 you assume you have a FG. That's logical, you just say ok we have three points. BUT! I think the other attitude has to be ok let's put up 6. Let's punch it in there and A: put up more points and B: Not risk a missed kick. That to me is also perfectly logical. Do you take crazy risks? Do you go for it on 4th and 10 in FG range? No, I'm not saying that. I'm not saying you even take risky passes. I am saying you shouldn't throw a predictable offense out there. I'm saying you do not "put it up the middle and go home". You try to score.

Maybe one day CMS's will go away. You would think after FOUR years he would have learned

That comment makes me sick. And THIS is the guy everyone thinks should be calling the plays instead of Shula?
They're one in the same. Shula the man. Rader the Yes man.
We buried them all game, but when pay day came, we just wanted to escape?
Gack!

I think he has "learned" how to go to 13-3 over the last 16 games which is pretty tough in the sec. He has faith in his players and staff while it didn't pay off for us this game it will in the future. Look at when he had JPW throwing out of his own endzone on back to back plays, a lot of people would say it was stupid to put a young qb in that position but it was just Shula having faith in his player. It seems to me that if they are on the field Shula feels that he can depend on them and imho that is what will bring bama back to the top. CMS will take us were we need to go but I know it is a tough loss to take. RTR

Wow. Can't argue with that.

Look back at rader's comments after last year's auburn game. He said that we lost because of bad starting field position. I knew that he was clueless then. We got absolutely dominated up front and this guy was blaming the loss on field position.

You are right we were killing them with our offense and we are just trying to escape rather than just step on their necks and end the thing.

With all the talk about the "killer instinct" not being something this staff thinks about...

Where is the mention of this play?

Mustain throws an interception, caught by Dukes.
Next play, play action to DJ who didn't make the catch but Arkansas was called for PI. The ball, like a lot of them yesterday, was slightly under-thrown...it was all green in front of DJ...but, it was clear the play called was for a home-run. Which, like a few others yesterday would have put the game out of reach.

Let's see...late in the game, score tied, following a turnover, and the staff goes for a home run ball. I'd call that going to the jugular. No other way to describe it.

This is not a rip of Shula, but Kines is the primary reason that this team has 13 wins in their past 16 games. Last year, we got every possible break, and barely won most of our games. It has started that way again this year.

Arkansas did everything that they could to hand us a win late in the game and in the first overtime. Even with those breaks - no dice.

IMO, good teams win games like this one. Simply said, we are not that good this year. If I had to rank Bama right now, I would put us at about 45-50. We will be better next year...

This one is definately Shula's, he laid the game at the feet of a true freshman. and NOT surprisingly he choked. Tiffin should have never willingly been put in that situation, JPW could have and most likely would have scored the dagger in the heart TD if Shula had let him. I realize Shula always plays conservative. its fine approach when you have as much talent as Auburn or LSU.

but there is plenty of blame to go around, Its inexcusable for the D to allow that shaken and rattled freshman QB to score a long TD pass on them. all they had to do was keep the game in front of them and they let a big fat tight end walk right past them. inexcusable.

No time to cry about it, Florida has been stoking a fire for our heads down there, we have to move on.

Shula called games last year knowing that the defense would hold and they did for the most part which lead to a great season for us. Yesterday, Shula called the last few minutes thinking the defense would hold and the most likely would have. In addition, wasn't it Shula who once again had "faith" in Kines after the his first season in bama when people were screaming for Kines' head.

So you admit that Shula is putting the game in Kines' hands? Defense is the reason that Bama won last year, not conservative play calling. Shula might have been playing to his strength, but his strength was Kines. Remember the TN game?

Again, not knocking Shula - giving Kines props...

It is the coaches job to get the players in a position to win and the players job to execute....it is that simple. You can blame who you want but that is the case in any sport.

this game really hurt more than any except the orange bowl against michigan. we now have a qb that can do it all. he was fantastic. as young and inexperienced as he is he made some great plays, especially on the 99 yard drive. we now have a dimension we have lacked for several years with injuries to brodie. the bad news is we have no running game now. i dont understand, how with the few changes on the offensive line, and the good rbs we still cant run. i do believe darby needs to run more north and south into the hole beforce making cuts. we owned arkansas in the air game. john picked them apart. dj and keith were as good a pair of receivers i have seen in a long time. i would have like to see a few possession passes to tight ends, but, i am afraid we need them to stay on the los to block. especially the right side. as for the missed opportunities to win. i have been watching football for over 50 years at all levels. the pros have players paid to make plays, so boo hoo on them when they miss. but, i would never put a pure freshman on the road into the position of winning not once, but twice. i would never concede 6 running plays up the middle giving up any chance for a first down or touchdown to the other team. our passing game was at its peak and i dont see anyway they could deny hall or brown in the end zone. i dont see darby up the gut, if you are going to run why not johns outside the big tackle smith. why not the jumbo backfield. i put this game on the coach, and i hope he learns to pick up the pace inside the red zone. he will gamble all over the field except in the red zone, and i think he has the qb now to do that.
