Question: Will the loser of Ohio State-Michigan drop below us?

This is something that keeps bugging me. The #2 and #3 ranked teams, both undefeated, have to play each other today. I'm hoping for a complete blowout (by either team, I don't care which), but I worry that if the game is the least bit close, the loser will remain ranked above us. That's because, hey, their close loss was to the #2 or #3-ranked team. And regardless of which team loses, their opponent was ranked higher than Texas.

But if one team totally dominates the other and makes them look bad, is there a chance that the loser drops below us?

Thoughts?
Doesn't matter. Just beat Georgia

When was the last time someone other than an SEC team won the national championship...Which is the burr under the committee's saddle. They want a non-SEC champion.

Who has OSU beaten? The only answer is Penn State. Are we seriously comparing a single win over Penn State to multiple wins over Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU, and road games at Kentucky and Auburn? It’s not even remotely comparable.
And Notre Dame, but Alabama's resume is better. The loss is the difference. We lost on the road by 6

I just cant fathom anyone believing that an ACC conference champion (even undefeated) should be in before the SEC champ.
Too many people don’t understand the nuances of college football schedules, especially when it relates to different conferences. There is absolutely no metric that supports FSU getting in over Bama. Their best win (LSU) is like our third best win.

Casual fans are stuck in the “every other sport does it this way” mantra but again they don’t understand how college football works.

In assuming what the rankings will look like after this weeks games, this is my best guess at end of regular season wins vs currently ranked opponents

Georgia: win against 1 top 10, and two top 25
Michigan: win against 1 top 10, and 1 top 25
FSU: win against 2 top 25
Washington: win against 1 top 10, and 2 top 25
Oregon: win against 1 top 25? Is this right
Ohio state: win against 2 top 25
Texas: win against 1 top 10, and 1 top 25
Alabama: win against 3 top 25

Actually losses don’t matter to them either. See TCU…
And to me, this is the most hilarious thing. That action could paint them into the “criticism corner” this year.

Let’s say FSU loses on a last second FG or OT to Louisville. Then it’s “our regular season body of work is enough and we lost with our backup QB. Like TCU last year, we deserve to be in, even with a last second loss in the championship”.

Or a similar situation with Washington losing to Oregon. Or least likely, Michigan losing to Iowa. And let’s not forget Georgia losing close game in the SECCG to Alabama.”

I’m hoping for some ridiculousness just for the giggles.

The problem is they can do whatever they want, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. The last two years of college football have been under a stranglehold from the committee.

With Ohio State, IMO, Day just plays too conservatively in these games. He calls our plays on offense himself, and he just doesn't seem to trust the players enough.
We know the feeling. Saban does the same thing with certain teams. He seems to play not to lose, instead letting his team just go out.and beat the crap out of them when we know we have the better team.

The real irony of this year is that it shows that in the world of a 4-team playoff, it is to your benefit to not challenge yourself with a non-conference schedule. Credit Alabama and Texas for scheduling the game, but essentially, the loser of that game (this year, us, last year TX) is hamstrung the rest of the year.

Washington's NC schedule was Boise, Tulsa, and Michigan St.
Oregon's NC schedule was Portland St., Texas Tech, and Hawaii
Florida State's is better with UF, LSU, North Alabama, and Southern Miss, but that has to make up for the terrible conference schedule, also, this is a 5-7 UF team, but I will credit them for playing LSU.
Michigan's NC was East Carolina, UNLV, and Bowling Green
OSU at least played at ND, so credit them for that.
UGA's NC schedule was UT Martin, Ball St., UAB, and Ga. Tech. Yes, I know the Oklahoma situation, but it seems like if that was the case, AL and TX could have dropped their game too.

The other thing is that it doesn't allow for development over the season. Granted this has been a bit of an odd year, but it definitely shows that challenging yourself out of conference is not beneficial, especially early in the season when you may not be developed yet.
