Transfer Portal 2023-2024...

I whole heartedly disagree. Football is not basketball. look around at the teams that hit the portal heavily and the teams that added kids here and there. The top 10 has many more of the latter than the former. to build a program, you have to have kids in the program more than a year. An NFL team could theoretically sign half the roster to one year contracts, but they choose not to for continuity reasons. It’s not a program if the roster turns over quickly.
I think almost everyone agrees college football in general is not as good the last couple of years vs the 8-9 years prior. the big culprit , IMO , is the transfer portal.
I’m not saying that the core of the team will consist of “one year players”. You’ll still retain most players from a recruiting class for two or three years. But you can expect ten or more across the classes to hit the portal each year, in addition to those graduating. Certainly you can’t sustain a program doing what Sanders did at Colorado.
The core of your high school recruiting though will be making sure you get those 8 or 10 difference makers (ie: last year -Procter, Downs, Haynes, Young, etc) that you can get on the field early and keep in the program three years.

It will be more likely that once they start producing, they will start looking for more money. That's just the way it's going to be for smaller schools until this NIL and transfer portal get under control.

You're already seeing scuttlebutt out of Arky about players hitting the portal because their NIL doesn't pay as well as other schools'. It's a free for all in the name of "player rights."

I hope we win this year. Because I just have this gut feeling that the transfer portal is going to NBA College Football. Turning over 50%+ of rosters will be more common than not.

I worry that I will at some point walk away.

I love Bama Hoops. But I hate turning over 60-75% of the roster every year. The energy to stress about it is becoming harder to muster. Is football following that pattern?

That’s why they keep getting rid of normal people seats to build special people rooms in these football stadiums. Got to keep the money people happy.

I've never been abke to get into college basketball outside of doing a bracket in March. Roster turnover, one and done players, and those squeaky shoes.

I find myself in what I consider a “slow check out mode” as it relates to Bama athletics. Part I guess is age (in my mid 60’s) but much of due to the changing landscape.
Fandom in college sports for me is that unique bond with the university and the players. It’s the feeling as a fan those players love the university and want to win for the university. It is somewhat of a foxhole mentality that fans and players share together., You are “shoulder to shoulder” in an effort to win. Watching a young player come in as a freshman and watching them develop as a player and a person over those 3-4 years is like watching them go through basic and boot camp to growing into leadership.
Today it seems to more about a mercenary mentality. It’s one thing to be buried on a roster with liitle hope. It is another thing when you’re a starter shopping yourself each year for a better NIL deal.
I use to revel in wins and have losses gnaw at me for days. Now I find myself pretty much over it, win or lose, in about 30 minutes. Age? Maybe. But certainly I believe the reality of knowing fewer and fewer of those players on the field or the court have the a true emotional stake in winning “for the school” is part of it. It is about performing well enough to built the personal brand and moving on to the next thing. And I’m not blaming the kids. Compensating them is well overdue. But it just seems we could have found “common ground” and “common sense” somewhere along the way.

NIL is ruining college sports...🙄

Some of who you see in the portal are there to see what $$$ offers will be made. If they don't get what they want they will withdraw. Some actually have no intention of leaving, they are getting their market value in order for their current NIL contract to "match the offer". It's bezness guys. There may be some who want a shot at a title and know they aren't getting one where they are at.

The overall flow of things favors the top programs. I think there are likely 4 or 5 programs with the top talent to win it all, and a few who look good by playing weak schedules. Once the 12 team playoff arrives it's going to become real obvious because you're going to see the same names in the finals more often than not.

I don't have a problem with NIL. It is great for the players. I have a problem with the teams for their unethical behavior and the NCAA for the lack of guardrails.
And that’s my biggest gripe. The feckless NCAA formed a committee a full two years prior knowing the courts WOULD rule in favor of the student athletes. And for two years it appears they did absolutely nothing in terms of even exploring the possibility of putting some type of guardrails in place.

And when the decision came down it was “okay boys, have at it”.

Just like I've heard about the shirts that are being printed up with Jalen and Isiah something to effect about 4th and 31? That's true NIL not paying someone to come to your school to play,so these two guys should be getting a percentage of the money made, just think how much they could make when Daniel Moore makes a painting and they sign it, WOW!!!

And when more and more people check out and the PTB realize eyeballs aren’t on the screens and suddenly they are bringing in less and less revenue, it may be too late to save.
