CFN: Florida State and the "Rigged" College Football Playoff: Daily Cavalcade

How tickled would you be if one of the voting groups (say, the AP) awarded FSU the championship rather than Bama Would you laugh aloud at the fact that Bama's NC would have an asterisk beside it forever?

2017 was enough for me, I don't want anything detracting from what the REAL national champion accomplishes.

Therefore I want UGA to CRUSH FSU so there's no doubt.
I'm in Florida this week and had a FSU fan give me a hard time using this scenario. I was wearing a Bama shirt and he walked by, turned around and started giving me grief. I smiled and said the committee got it right. He said just wait till we beat Georgia and the AP votes us number one. Thankfully he left it at that and walked away.

In case you don't want to read this on Apple News:

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit goes on an unhinged rant about FSU's CFP snub

Sounded pretty hinged to me.

FSU has been the beneficiary of this scenario more often than not. 1993. 2000 was a big one (I know Washington had a win over Miami). Even in 2014 there was serious conversation going on about them being left out of the top 4, and they did fall to 3, as an undefeated team because they had underwhelmed so badly. And of course, Oregon crushed them in the Rose Bowl.

I would have guffawed loudly and proudly

When I think of unhinged, I think of Kirk Herbstreit. Woah look at that loose cannon!!! Man was just always going nuts in those Dove Commercials he was in. look at him flying off the handle saying he has a "right to his opinion" and bringing up "Facts" about the previous system. "Wishing Florida State and Mike Norvel the best." Despicable.

The insane thing is. It's not like they can make anything change. What exactly is the end goal of all this??? Change is already going to happen next year with the 12-team playoff. Is the committee even going to be the same people next year?

There are some that believe that if they whine enough, everyone will say "You know, You are right. Alabama is out of the playoffs and fsu is in. We just didn't see it before. Gosh we are glad to have so many whiney little snots like fsu fans to help us see the light."

Oh gee, Florida State....a team that never EVER got the benefit of the doubt except......

1989 - finishes #3 in the AP poll with two losses ahead of SEC co-champion with one l0ss (Tennessee) and Big 8 champion with one loss (Colorado). And one of their losses - they like to say they lost to Brett Favre, but the part they never mention is that USM went 4-6 in their other ten games.
(FSU benefit: ranked ahead of teams with fewer losses)

1990 - ranked #4 with two losses....well ahead of 10-1 Houston and 10-1-1 Louisville
(FSU benefit: ranked ahead of teams with better records)

1991 - 11-2 Florida State ends the year at #4, three spots ahead of 10-2 SEC champion Florida...who beat FSU, 14-9
(FSU benefit: ranked ahead of team who beat them head-to-head and had same # of losses)

1992 - 11-1 FSU finishes year at #2 ahead of 11-1 Miami (#3)...who beat FSU head-to-head
(FSU benefit: ranked ahead of team who beat them head-to-head)

1993 - 12-1 FSU wins national championship ahead of 11-1 Notre Dame, who beat FSU head-to-head; worse, they're ranked ahead of 11-0 Auburn and deprive 11-0 West Virginia of a national championship shot with Nebraska. WVA beat the team that beat the team (UCF logic), was unbeaten, and was Big East conference champion. (We'll spot them Auburn because probation)
(FSU benefit: ranked ahead of team that beat them head-to-head AND unbeaten conf champion)

1996 - FSU (11-1) ends the year at #3 despite playing three fewer games than 14-1 WAC champion BYU. For reasons never made clear, Arizona State beat #1 Nebraska yet remained below the top spot, but FSU moved to the top spot upon beating #1 Florida.
(FSU benefit: higher ranking despite same number of losses and 3 fewer games)

1998 - despite a far worse loss (17 points) to 7-5 NC State than Ohio State's 4-point loss to 6-6 Sparty, the BCS selects FSU over Ohio State AND UNBEATEN TULANE for the national title game.
(FSU benefit: chosen ahead of undefeated conf champion and despite worse loss)

2000 - despite a head-to-head loss to one-loss Miami, FSU is chosen again for the BCS title game.
(FSU benefit: chosen despite a head-to-head loss)

2003 - despite an 8-point head-to-head loss to Miami at home, the final BCS poll has FSU two spots ahead of the Canes, who have the same record. Just to show the BCS is wrong in the same year they have Oklahoma at #1 after a butt kicking...FSU loses to Miami in the bowl game, too. They're also ranked ahead of two one-loss teams, Miami (of Ohio) and Boise State.
(FSU benefit: ranked higher despite same record and head-to-head loss)

2015 - the final CFP ranks 10-2 Florida State NINE spots ahead of 12-1 Houston. Just for good measure, Houston rolls them in the bowl game.
(FSU benefit: ranked higher despite another team having better record)

2016 - the final CFP ranks 9-3 Florida State at 11, two spots ahead of #13 Louisville, who is also 9-3. This is understandable since Louisville scraped by FSU by the narrow margin of 63-20 head-to-head.
(FSU benefit: ranked higher despite same record and head-to-head shellacking)

Florida State has - MANY TIMES since 1989:
a) been ranked ahead of teams with better records
b) been ranked ahead of teams who beat them head-to-head (one by a mere 43 points)
c) been selected to play in a national title game despite both a and b.

They've been overrated by the AP.
They've been overrated by the BCS.
They've been overrated by the CFP (seriously - how in the hell did 2016 happen?)

Florida State never once complained about getting the benefit of the doubt.
So......I'm not sure what their problem is right now.

Incidentally, I have NO PROBLEM with most of those ratings that favored Florida State. In 1989, they started 0-2 but were the one team to beat the eventual national champions, so fine.

Their rankings in 1991 and 1992 are debatable, their inclusion over Notre Dame in 1993 is beyond explanation, and their ranking in 2016 is what needs to be investigated by the Florida lawyers.

But I had NO PROBLEM with FSU going over Tulane in 1998; my goodness, Tulane's own head coach (Tommy Bowden) said he had coached in the SEC and could not justify including Tulane in the BCS title hunt. I didn't even have a problem with them going over Miami in 2000.

And I don't have a problem with them getting to go play Georgia, either.

Every time there's a dominant team that wins a lot that team gets the benefit of the doubt.

In the 40s, it was Notre Dame.
In the 50s, it was Oklahoma.
In the early 60s, it was Alabama and Notre Dame.
In the late 60s, it was Texas.
In the 70s, it was Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame, and Alabama.
In the 80s and early 90s, it was Miami.
In the mid-90s, it was Florida State and Nebraska
In the early 00s, it was first Oklahoma and then USC.
Since 2009, it has been Alabama.

I still have whiplash when we get the benefit of the doubt, even though it's been going on for nearly 15 years now.

Earle, words of wisdom here...

We have a friend who had a string of boxers. The last one, Moses, was particularly undisciplined. Before he was fully grown, when he weighed about 75 lb, I put him on the floor and lay on top of him for about 20 minutes. When we went to visit later, after he was fully-grown, and weighed over 100, we visited again. Moses went around the room and sniffed everybody. When he got to me, he rose up and put his paws on my chest (he was now as tall as I, when up on his back legs) and proceeded to try to lick me in the face. IDK if dogs develop crushes... :)

Injustice?
