Boeing has asked airlines to inspect all of their 737 Max jets for a potential loose bolt in the rudder system after an airline discovered a potential problem with a key part on two aircraft.

An unnamed international airline found a bolt with a missing nut in a rudder-control linkage mechanism while conducting routine maintenance – and it found a similar bolt that wasn’t properly tightened in a yet-to-be delivered plane. An airplane’s rudder is used to control and stabilize the aircraft while in flight.

Almost like they were right in the Downfall documentary. Kill the company culture of "engineer it the right way no matter the costs and profits will follow" to one that is profit first and foremost and this is what you get.

It really is amazing their fall from the world leader in commercial airplanes.
 

"Midair pressure problem" is a weird way to say "violent decompression event that blew out part of the fuselage". That quote must have come from Boeing PR department.

Tis but a scratch.

I wonder if this was one of the areas 'stretched' in the redesign.

engineering was getting complacent and lazy and needed to be disrupted. thankfully, there were some mbas available who had watched ted talks on aerodynamics

An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 had an explosive decompression shortly after takeoff on Friday, but the crew was able to land safely back at Portland International Airport. Alaska immediately grounded all 65 of its MAX 9s pending an inspection. According to various sources, the over-wing emergency exit on the left side of the aircraft and possibly some of the structure surrounding it blew out as the plane climbed through 16,000 feet on its way from Portland to Ontario, California. A report by a Portland television station shows a gaping hole in the fuselage. A Tik Tok video has been posted by the Daily Mail showing the scene from inside the cabin after the departure of the exit. The failure occurred next to a seat occupied by a boy whose shirt was ripped off. Adults held him in his seat. There were 174 passengers and six crew onboard. The incident happened about 5 p.m. local time. The aircraft was almost new and was delivered to Alaska two months ago, according to the Daily Mail. The FAA and NTSB are assembling teams to travel to Portland. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.


Doesn't look like an emergency exit over the wing. Besides, a child would not be allowed to sit by the exit.

On the 5th of January, 2024, an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX was forced to return to Portland after its rear mid-cabin exit door separated in flight.
The Boeing 737 MAX 9 with registration N704AL was operating flight AS1282 from Portland to Ontario with 171 passengers and six crew members aboard. However, shortly after takeoff, the aircraft lost its mid-aft exit door in flight and experienced a rapid decompression.
The Boeing 737 MAX 9 involved in the incident was a brand-new aircraft that was recently delivered at the end of October.


Video from the plane - a passenger says not the emergency door and that no one was seated next to the window. However, the article shows that it was where the door would be.
 
Holy crap! No one in the window seat but a boy and his mother in the middle and aisle seats. And the kid's shirt was ripped off.

It's a good thing they weren't at cruising altitude where the temp would have been -40 to -60 degrees F.
 
16,000 feet is not all that high. Either there is a major structural problem on these planes or someone forgot an essential part.
Yeah that is why I mentioned the stretch. Wonder if that introduced too much flex in portions over the wing. I would think that wouldn’t make it past the simulation portion of the design and you are correct about missing part, but with the planes history so far…

Mid air pressure problem is akin to Dale Earnhardt lightly bumped into the wall

Apparently this was a newly delivered plan. I guess they didn’t opt for the “bolt tightening option” to cut costs.

The people on /r/aviation are saying this is a cutout in the fuselage for an emergency exit to meet regulations in a higher seat configuration. This airline didn't opt for that configuration so there would have been a blank inserted and bolted into the cutout and the inside would have been a 'normal' interior wall. Apparently the blank failed. There are industry people over there. So I'd trust what they say over these news articles.

In the B737 MAX 9, there’s a rear cabin exit door located after the wings but before the rear exit door. This feature, activated in dense seating setups, aligns with evacuation requirements. Notably, Alaska Airlines keeps these doors permanently “plugged.”

According to reports, Boeing deactivates the additional door on some of the carrier’s MAX 9 jets in the factory before delivery. This door, indistinguishable to passengers, is a standard sidewall and window in the cabin.

Activation of the door increases the MAX 9’s passenger capacity to accommodate up to 215 individuals. An airline with a higher density configuration like Panama’s Copa Airlines has a door there. It is being speculated that the door plug popped off somehow in this incident.

You are very much correct about the plug where the door would be.

Obviously, a major malfunction.
