Alabama QBs in 2024

Alright so I’ll give you derogatory in being critical of his ability or implying he’s not a good qb and wishing for him to move on. No one has personally insulted milroe called him out of name or the other which is what I took your comment to mean. I haven’t seen anyone question his integrity.

Forget picks - there were countless 3 and outs because he did not complete passes to wide open receivers. Those are also possession turnovers.

CNS on this subject: "f you really analyze the game, one of the biggest things is ... we had too many drive-stopping plays on offense. I mean, we shot ourselves in the foot. A sack is a drive-stopping play. Getting a penalty usually is a drive-stopping play." Link

There were four 3-and-out possessions. JM only had incompletions during two of those four possessions.

You really need to stop. Milroe was a bad QB in 2023. If not for your great defense, Alabama would have 4+ losses with his play this year.

This is a great example of how you cite quotes or facts in your support of JM that actually don't support your argument at all.

For instance, Jalen being indecisive in the pocket and holding the ball too long leads to sacks sometimes too. That's on him not the OL when it happens.

OR citing him not having incompletions doesn't matter if he doesn't throw the ball because he doesn't see a wide open guy or doesn't have the confidence to fit it into a tight window.

The fact he took a lot of sacks OR scrambled because there wasn't a sure thing pass distorted his passing completion percentages all season long. Made them look a lot better.

I think Jalen will start next season. More from the situation than any thing else. If the coaches don't learn to make more use of his running ability, it will be another frustrating season. The other thing is when he scrambles he needs to learn to spin out in the direction the pressure came from. When he tries to escape away from pressure he gets ran down despite how fast he is suppose to be. I understand he wants to be a pocket passer, but he just isn't good at it. We can win games with Jalen. I don't see a championship of any kind, maybe 9-10 wins.

Over the last 8 seasons, CNS has not started a QB at Alabama that did not ultimately start in the NFL. He's got a great track record for developing talent at Alabama. Maybe give him, and by extension JM, the benefit of the doubt? If Jimbo Fisher was our coach, I would not be defending JM.

Now you are just cherry picking, and conveniently cut off your timeline at the last guy we had who didn’t play in the NFL. 2015 we had Coker, 2014 Sims, 2008 we had JPW. And all of those guys were better QBs than Milroe and none had NFL careers. Heck, AJ McCarron was arguably the best “early period” QB we had under Saban and miles better than Milroe, and he was basically a career backup in the NFL.

Milroe may develop massively in the next 7 months and develop all the skills he has lacked this season and get drafted as a starter in the NFL. But acting like we are all out of line and stupid for saying this is unlikely and we want a wide open QB competition is just crazy.

There were two sacks during those four 3-and-out possessions. Both are shown below. Which one did JM hold the ball too long? I'm not talking about the season in general, we are talking about what was the underlying cause of three-and-out possessions during the Rose Bowl.

Honestly we probably should have lost Tennessee and Auburn. It was really not one of those great teams. We probably had our weakest quarterback production since 2017, but you really never had the constant fear of losing with Hurts the way you did with Milroe.

In this day of football you either need a smart quarterback like McCarthy that can manage a system or a baller like Penix to win a national championship. Milroe really is neither at this point. He really is a downhill running back trying to learn how to be a pocket passer. It’s a weird combination that hasn’t really had a consistency of working to make us a legitimate threat on offense. If I were to pick the best quarterbacks returning in the SEC I would probably say Beck, Ewers,Cook, and Dart are the ones in the lead. Milroe is just raw at this point.

2nd one top of the field is open on the cutback had to be thrown before the cut but it’s short of sticks and would have to win the one on one but better than a sack.

The 1st sack tho right on the rose bowl emblem for 20 plus yards plus yards after the catch. You can check the time stamp to confirm the play if you want and this is open before the pressure would even effect him. He didn’t see it tho

edit to say on the 1st one it’s also 1st down and the receiver under the lb is open also for 5-10 yard gain.

This is the 2nd one he’s open at the top if the ball hits him on the screenshot he has a chance to make the play for a 1st but not guaranteed

I can go through and find these open on timing plays all through the year that don’t get the pass. This is everyone’s concern with milroe the plays are there he doesn’t see them to execute it and it handcuffs the offense.

So Milroe threw for what? 250 yards? 275 yards? No he threw for what? 116 yards which is 5 yards per attempt . Why? It was pretty simple. Michigan took away THE throw he was most comfortable with- the deep throw. They played over the top KNOWING his weakness is the short/intermediate throws. And from a pressure standpoint they KNEW when players are “under pressure” they revert to the thing that is most comfortable. And for Milroe that is waiting for that deep route to come open, giving them a chance to affect him in the pocket.

In addition, they showed a number of exotic looks on defense that confused the o-line calls. An experienced, polished QB is able to check out of a play, or “shift” a back or TE into position to pick up blitzing DB’s or LB’s. . Milroe isn’t even allowed to make “give or keep” decisions on zone reads. How many audible/check decisions do you think he gets? How about zero.

The quarterback position is more than just about getting into the RIGHT play. It also about getting you out of the WRONG play based on what you see.

I disagree. JM may be the starter but it will be because he beat out a much improved Ty Simpson. I truly believe Simpson is primed to make a legit run for QB1. So if JM is the starter it means he has definitely improved.

Watch this play from Penix. This is the kind of play you'd like to see a QB make. Obviously this is an elite play and I'm not saying Milroe has to do this exact thing but you do want a QB who can make somewhat similar plays at times.

Not for nothing - how old is Penix? Not making excuses for JM but I doubt Penix was doing that 2-3 years ago. Plus he’s got a couple of seasons’ experience as a starting QB; this ain’t apples to apples.
If JM is still around in two years, could he do that? We’ll never know.
Yes, that’s what you want your QB to do; not many 1st year starters can.
This is an excellent example of doing the right thing, but expecting JM to have that skill set in his tool kit, at this point in time, isn’t reasonable. But he missed a lot and made bad decisions, and this is the result. All he can do at this point is learn, and from the last two seasons it is reasonable to judge that curve as “not steep”.

Additionally, take note of the coverage at the top. Our receiver is at the 50 YD line. The Michigan DB has already turned his hips bailed anticipating a deep route. This is what they did all game. They would not bite on fakes or stutters.

I come here for discussion and exchange of ideas and opinions, not to necessarily have everything I post “sealed with a stamp of approval” by the majority. And it is okay if my opinion doesn’t jive with others. And vice versa.

And all of that is fine. It is a good thing to express/consider alternative points of view, as long as you do so in a respectful manner. Things get off the rail when “tone” comes across as condescending or overly critical. It is the reason I left Twitter. Respectful discussion became the exception rather than the rule.

Kudos to the mods here for all they do to keep things in check here.
In my humble opinion, this is nothing more than another symptom of the cyber-world in which we live…and I see the same thing happening in politically-oriented discussions…as well as most other topical discussions.

I’m 58 years old (which is totally unimportant other than to offer a point of reference) and I can remember when people used to be able to have civil and respectful conversations about most things. We earnestly listened to (and valued) the opinions of others, as well as asserting our own thoughts on a subject………….. and we did it with respect. (If you’re rolling your eyes at this statement, you would probably benefit from some introspection)

It saddens me to witness the decline (and eminent death) of respectful inter-human-communication. I truly miss the days where people could “respectfully disagree” on a topic…

I am a dinosaur on the verge of extinction, carrying a heavy heart. But I will exit this realm with a heart that loves humanity…and that’s the best I have to give this world.

In today’s world, people tend to be polarized in their views…while preaching down from their soapbox with index fingers firmly planted into their ears.

I feel this way as well...............I would not be shocked to see Ty win the job. I like Milroe and think he is very talented, but I still feel he has reached a ceiling. He may shock me and look like a million bucks, but he will have to improve greatly.................and that means learning to see AND hit those open receivers he missed constantly

Yep I can’t remember when it was but it was a close up view of burton trying a stutter step and the db did not even care wasn’t even a thought to bite on the stutter step.
