Transfer Portal 2023-2024...

I mean, he did this once before - when he came to Bama. Maybe he's fishing for more NIL and this is a way of leveraging more cash from Bama, or maybe he's gone.

It's becoming obvious that the portal reveals character. We tend to like it when it's to our benefit, but the reality is some of these guys either only think about the money / themselves.
I think you are correct

Bama is the bullseye in the middle of the target. We need to rally the forces and weather the storm. Everyone should of seen this coming when Saban decided to leave. I understand the playing for the Goat part, but these players that have been there a year or more should have some level of appreciation for the program. The transfer portal magnifies the ugliest part of sports. Shame on the PTB for ruining team sports. I didn't get a penny when I played in HS. I did it to be part of something bigger than myself and the competition. Those making the rules now have agendas that are in the best interest of the game.

I think at this point Bama is trying to get to the magic number of 85............and may sign some out of the portal as well. There are a couple from UW that are considering Bama strongly

I think trying to pick off some of the best players from coaching change schools is key right now. The main portal doesn't open again until after signing day. We've got to make hay while the sun shines so we're not stuck picking up leftovers in the spring.

I'm pretty sure thats whats going on................delicate balancing act of keeping what you got and going after others. And they are on it

I just don't understand this. He was gonna start next year.
He could have started. We will be bringing in at least two very talented corners into the system next year. Domani Jackson was the number 2 cornerback coming out of high school when he signed in class of 2022. We also have the number 1 cornerback in this years class in Jaylen Mbakwe who maybe the best corner prospect we have ever had or he is up there for sure. I believe both were with the team for bowl season so it possible that is the reason we have see some defensive backs leave if they see how talented these guys look. If we can keep these two that would be huge to have their talent in the defensive backfield.

The problem is that Saban became the Program...in some ways he was bigger than Bama all by himself.

When Saban asked , "Is this what you want college football to be?" it wasn't a rhetorical question. Sadly, the NCAA refused to answer the question and the conferences all just sat back and did little to nothing. The inmates are running the asylum now and it will be hard and painful to reign any of this in. Expecting the window-lickers in Congress to address and fix the issue is laugh-out-loud ridiculous.

I just don't see any other way around it that doesn't severely punish the player who, let's all be honest, signed with the program under the assumption the HC wanting him would be there.

Should the coach get the same commitment from the player? Get a bad run of players who leave via portal, especially good ones, and the coach gets fired for losing.

I just don't see how this NIL stuff lasts at this level. There isn't an endless supply of donor money. Seems like it would calm down after the first few years (esp when programs don't achieve results.). How many times are donors going to cough up the amount of money we are talking about here?

Then again, maybe we need to get a Lambo dealership in Tuscaloosa.

NIL should be restricted to legitimate business agreements, such as, spokesperson and advertising deals or businesses like the whole LANK thing. Let the guys find sources of income, but it can't just be a collective of boosters lining their pockets. It has to be a real business venture with sources of income that can be traced for real work or real use of Name Image and Likeness like billboards, personal appearances for autographs and signings, or product endorsements of some kind. You would throw in businesses started by the players that play off of their NIL.

Open up the portal for entry once a year after the season is completely over including playoffs and all bowl games. It would last a few weeks like NFL free agency. If you don't get an offer then you can go back to your former school if they want you and haven't given away your scholarship already. If you don't get an offer then you are a man without a home and you can be signed later if someone wants you and has a scholarship for you.
