DeBoer gets his first transfer ... and it's a QB. Austin Mack

Well they got the #2, #3 and #107 CB's in this cycle as well as the #6, #23 and #24 safeties plus Domani Jackson from portal.

Tony Mitchell still there to go with Bray Hubbard, Jahlil Hurley, Malachi Moore, and DeVonta Smith.

That's 12 and i assume they gonna get some more from portal.

After reviewing the entire roster we set at 79 on scholarship. We still have a LOT of talent. I'd guess that at least a couple more will leave by the end of spring. If we added the right 8 guys, at the right spots, this could be a very, very good team. Will be interesting to see how this all goes through spring and if CKD can deliver the goods.

CKD is never going to recruit as many 5 stars as CNS did. However, it's entirely possible, even likely, that we'll get a lot more production from those guys. Great staff, great system, and a more open-minded approach to developing players. Frankly, our staff and roster has been in a constant state of upheaval for several years now. Completely reasonable to believe CKD might deliver more even if the number of entitled guys is down a few. I'm very optimistic if we weather the next few months OK.

I’m waaaaaay more worried about the secondary than I am the QB room. The offense is going to be just fine imo.

As they say, "It's always darkest right after the Downs Transfer."

We'll miss him but we'll be OK with who we got and who we'll get. Think Bama might go a little crazy when the next portal window opens!

Visitor pic from this weekend. Twitter talk is kid next to Simpson is Austin Mack. I think Simpson is 6' 1" OR 2".

Austin Mack is huge!!!

Mack is massive. After reading what Brock Huard said about him, I have to say I am pretty stoked. We already just leveled up a ton with adding Grubb, a new o-line coach and a new wide receiver coach. This offense is going to be fun to watch again.

“Yet another gut punch to the development of young, talented players,” Huard said via X. “Austin lights up a room & at 6’6 plus his presence & arm are unique. I can promise you all the SEC scribes & Bama social sites will marvel at Mack’s set of physical traits. Cam Newton light w/a better delivery.”

“I think behind the scenes people also don’t realize that Dylan Morris had a bit of an injury and Austin took second-team reps for the majority of the second half of the season, and if something happened significantly to Michael Penix, a 17-year-old was going to be the quarterback for this undefeated team,” Huard said.

“I know Alabama fans are freaking out because Julian [Sayin] is an immensely talented kid,” he said. “I promise you, when you see this guy throw, when you see Austin Mack in person, when he walks in the room, his presence is enormous. He is bright, he is smart. The Husky staff loved him. I was bummed more than any other player for the Huskies that went into the portal.”

Situation: we get AM and lose JS - I think we've spent enough time on the "why" (and we may never know exactly how it went down).

But let's talk about the "what" - what are we getting.

It may seem hyperbolic, but AM is a net gain and it's really not that debatable.

AM has a year in the system; JS didn't and is starting from scratch.

AM has a huge advantage in size/stature to standing in the pocket. About 4-5 inches on Sayin.

According to the Brock Huard quote, AM was essentially the #2 QB if Penix had gone down late in the season. Think about that. Penix gets hurt and AM is seen as capable of running the Washington offense when he was supposed to be a senior in HS!

FTR, this doesn't mean AM will be a better QB than JS in the long run. He may or may not. But, from day 1 in T-town. AM > JS.

Another observation shared from a local in Tuscaloosa.

He said one of the local, Bama media guys who spent time with the team in Pasadena and saw JS throw with the other QBs later reported that JS was nowhere near ready to compete for PT next year. He also said that Dylan Lonergan was head and shoulders better throwing long passes.

This is not to slight the potential that I think JS has (would have eventually had in T-town and may have in Columbus), but it just illustrates my prior post that we got a current, net gain at the QB position when AM came in as compared to JS.

But this also might give a little insight into "why" JS may have decided to transfer. Leaving AM out of the equation, JS may have seen the hill to climb to get earlier PT in T-town might have been steeper than he originally thought and this is before he had to consider going up against AM.

Crimson glasses for all!!

It's funny how the narrative goes with regard to players transferring. If they are undersized, unknown, or coming from a lesser program, we pick out their qualities, focus on positives, dismiss the negatives, hype their "potential", and recall all the unknowns who became NFL greats. When a highly regarded player leaves, we hear how he wasn't going to help immediately, point out you never know if a 5 star will actually pan out, or focus on the fact he will be missed but is replaceable.

For 17 years we have seen what metrics Saban thought was required at each position. So a lot of what we knew or thought we knew about how to build a team is going to change. We just have to trust that the new coaches know what they are doing.

JR. Year Highlights (reclassified for 2023):

- Stands tall in pocket (lol)
- Has great footwork
- Makes very quick decisions
- Quick release
- Not a statue
- Arm strength is very good
- Can throw off platform and on the run

Losing Sayin hurt, but this film will make you feel better.

Thanks BamaMoon. To add to that list what I noticed. He steps up in the pocket like Mac Jones did but when he needed to escape pressure, he was comfortable throwing on the run. Also, he kept his vision downfield and had good awareness around him. I am very excited about seeing him play.

Other insiders that post elsewhere have said similar things about Sayin and Lonergan. Basically, Sayin can sling it but Lonergan still looked like the best QB on the roster.

He looked like the best QB at spring practice last year, but he must have done some things in practice that made the coaches nervous. I think our QB room is very solid right now. I am excited to hear reports coming out of spring practice when it gets cranked up.

I agree - Lonergan was the best QB in last years spring game.

I know this has been observed 100 times or more, but wasn't DL also running the offense against the 3rd team defense during most of the Spring Game when he was playing???

I admit he looked poised and threw the ball well, but I also kept thinking "he probably has the least pressure and best opportunity to impress" with Spring QB rules and throwing against the 3rd team.

Not knocking on his talents OR potential going forward but it seems the "context" of his looking good in the last year's A-Day game is rarely mentioned.
