Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama v. WKU...

Look at Alabama, for example. The Tide dominated Western Kentucky 63-0, with quarterback Jalen Milroe accounting for five touchdowns and Keon Sabb picking off two passes in the Tide's first game of the post-Saban era. Imagine what this program might've accomplished these past few years if only Saban hadn't been holding it back.

We were rotating a bunch of players all game so maybe that was an issue.

I looked at the play by play from the box score and we had them in 3rd and med to long like 5-6 times and 4th down and med twice and we just kept letting them off the hook.

I want to watch the game again today if I can see what happened.

But we were consistently playing well on 1st and 2nd down that whole series.
We had 2nd and 3rd (?) team defense in for most of that drive. Brought some 1st team back in toward the end...I think CKD and CKW were testing the troops so to speak. We missed a few tackles but were in proper position on most of the plays.

Okay, seriously folks, it was WKU. Saban beat these teams soundly as well. You really can’t take a whole lot away from most of these games in week 1 but, I’m sure some Auburn fans are buying NCG tickets right now.

If OM wasnt in the middle of nowhere, I think he fits there pretty well. Imo, he should stay there. Jorts U may have more to offer outside of work but it has culture that doesn't seem to fit Kiffin.

Lots of outstanding scenery in both Oxford and Gainesville. Less of a fishbowl in Gainesville, plus better football recruiting territory.

If they pay him (UF is notoriously penny wise and pound foolish), I could see Kiffin moving.

Still, he’s always a 3-day bender away from a program-imploding scandal. Might come during the CFB playoffs (!). Might happen next summer. Might happen Homecoming week. But it’s a matter of when, not if, you have a godamighty mess on your hands.

Within the confines of football, he’s great. Set one toenail outside that, and he’s a national-level problem waiting to happen.

For what its worth, Kiffin got him a senior college grad girlfriend when he first got to Ole Miss. This many years later he is still with her. Got to be some kind of record for him. Met her once, very attractive, what you would expect to see at Ole Miss. Its kind of weird but he has sort of settled down there.

I only saw one play like that. Jalen was 7 of 9 for 200 yards. 3 touchdowns, no ints. Ran for 79 on 10 carries.
Jalen and Ty got the same number of throws. Jalen got 200 yards out of his... To go with 80 rushing yards.

Anyone who thinks Ty runs this offense "better" is watching a different game.

On top of that, Jalens o-line started as a completely different line than he has practiced all of fall with. Remember, proctor was injured during warmups, throwing pritchet in late (who also hasn't been practicing at LT this fall). Ty got to play with the line he's been practicing with all of fall and spring. So some nuance to be observed in this game I think.

I was frustrated by the early hiccups as well, but reflecting back on the reality of the situation, Jalen had a game. Ty did too, but the numbers are distinctly in Jalens favor.

If you told me we win 63-0 I'd say we must have got a very clear picture of what the offense will look like.

However, with all the big plays (and no you don't want guys stepping out of bounds to avoid big/explosive plays) but we never really saw the 1st team offense drive down the field under more normal game conditions. I'm not even sure how many 3rd downs we faced, which again is something positive, but the other side of the coin this game didn't go the way most games go. I don't know if I can remember a game with so many big, explosive plays and not one long, extended drive (again for 1st team players).

So with Jalen only getting 9 passing attempts, it remains to be seen what this offense would look like up against a team with a better defense like we'll see in games 3 and 4.

Two big things stand out in this game that give me a lot of optimism about an improved offense:

1. The talent at running back is insane! Nuf said.
2. JM's second pass to Williams was a thing of beauty where he looked left and then came back across the field to Williams in what was probably his 3rd read in the progression.

2. I understand the Milroe complaints, but this is his 3rd, and I think best, OC in as many years. There were a few same-old same-old moments, but he also ran more decisively, and the 2 Williams TDs came from JM setting up in the pocket and going through his progressions. CKD and Sheridan (CNS?) deserve the chance to develop JM.

Aside from a few times of holding the ball too long he had a phenomenal game. I think he looked more decisive.

However, i think with about just everything in the game, you have to wait until Game 3 and Game 4 to make a good assessment on where we are. Neither WKU or USF were ever going to challenge us enough to make us need Milroe to win the game. I think the trip to Camp Randall is going to be the first true test we have this year. Yeah say what you want about Wisconsin but the place will be wild and the Badgers will have circled the game the whole off season so if we dont knock them out early it could be a game that we need some prilosec for.

My wife’s uncle was over and watching the Auburn game on another TV. He played at auburn in the 70’s. If he said it once, he said it ten times….have you ever seen a team score fifty in a half. Keep in mind this was all in South Alabama accent. I finally said nope, I’ve never seen Auburn do it. Total silence after that.

Just about everyone in my family are Barners., My son in law was watching on another tv here. He was going on and on about the their “explosive” offense.
I said “Pump your brakes. You do know that Alabama A&M is about the same as Arkansas-Pine Bluff? The team Arkansas led 49-0 at half, calling off the dogs and won 70-0 on Thursday night, right?”
It’s like people getting ridiculously enthusiastic watching Karmer beat up on 10 year olds in his karate class.

full disclosure, obviously a barner.

I think if Bama ends up in situations where you’re counting on Jalen’s arm to bail you out of jams, things get really tenuous…
You of all people should know about Jalen’s ‘clutch’ gene. And that was neither the first nor last time he showed it. UT, LSU, Ark, then UGA after AU, iirc, probably others. Even in the Texas game he brought the team from behind to ahead once and close another time both late on the strength of his arm but the D couldn’t hold in either case.

No, making big plays late has never been an issue with him.

Wait, did you just put that loss to Texas on the defense?
