I re-watched the game last night, and, honestly, even if Milroe had played better, we still would have lost. The offensive line was atrocious, to the point that if anyone questioned their heart in last year's USF game, then they should have the same questions after Saturday's game. The defensive scheme was laughable, and our receivers are extremely average and have no ability to block, yet, we continue to run wide receiver screens. This is probably more anecdotal, but every team that has tried a shovel pass against us has won.
I don't dislike Milroe, he's stayed out of trouble, represented the University well, and has played the best he's able to play. Sometimes that play is really good, and sometimes it's really bad. The problem is that he's just not a very good quarterback, and he probably never will be. Is it time to move on from Milroe? I think even the most optimistic fans, like myself, recognize that he is what he is, and we will never be anything other than a good but not great team with him. I say this knowing that we probably win the national title last year if we just avoid one or two mishaps in the Michigan game, but the problem is we never avoid the mishaps. So, in my mind, it's time to move on. I'm tempted to say "I fear" that Milroe is coming back, but instead I will say "I think" he's coming back, or will at least want to. It will be a watershed moment for DeBoer in terms of how he handles that.
I see a lot posted about the LANK stuff, and I don't know anything about it, and I would guess that there is probably no one on this board who really knows how it has impacted the team dynamics. It's probably mostly speculation, and some of it may be correct. I don't know. I just feel like we sometimes reach for explanations on things and jump to absurd conclusions in order to explain why things are what they are. I think the real reason in the disappointment of this season is the simplest answer. We have all new coaches, we don't have the players that fit the systems they want to run, and we tried to fit a square peg in a round hole this season thinking we had a shot at being really good and it unfortunately hasn't worked. Much like Milroe, we've had moments of greatness and we've had moments of awfulness, but fairly or unfairly, it's across the board and not just on Milroe.
