Exactly. The same logic that ranked us above Miami should also rank us above SMU. This is such an easy decision. They compared our sos against Miami and our record wasn't the same.

They are better coached than Clemson but don't have as many dudes.Notre Dame is a better version of Clemson. Probably not good to enough to win it all but definitely good enough to destroy SMU
I agree, but I still hope we don't get "TCU" all over again by getting bumped by SMU.In numerous conversations with friends, I have come to the conclusion that, for all their failures, Americans try to be extremely fair. That manifests itself with a reluctance to pass judgment on people. It is really difficult for today's American society to say, "This one is worthy, but that one is not." Thus, we tend to say, "Everyone is worthy."
Then you overlay that with sports, which are designed to indicate "This one is superior to that one" (through the score of the game), and you have a clash of cultures.
Not every team is equally skilled and talented. Not every conference is equal.
We try to accommodate the silly idea that the American Athletic Conference is the same as the SEC, and it is simply not.
Yeah Clemson got in but had Miami won there would have been a lot of people saying If Clemson doesn’t schedule Georgia and scheduled South Carolina state they would have had a better shot at 10-2. If you are a big dog in big conference there is no point playing any tough out of conference games. If your in a weaker conference like Clemson is you want to play a team like Georgia but that gets you another loss and soon those teams will realize there no benefit in playing a good team.If we get left out in favor of SMU, I hope Byrne cancels the FSU and Wisconsin games and schedules FIU and Arkansas State in their place.
I think the SEC and Big 10 leaving the ncaa and having their own national championship playoff is more likely. But I agree with this sentiment if the committee leaves a 4th SEC team outThere is reason to cut the SEC schedule back to 6 games. Stop eating your own. Eat the enemy.
back to back weeks to evaluate USCe and SMU - one team won. The other lost. That helpsus plenty. Not that anyone seems to actually care about the data and resumes, but Sagarin and FPI are now updated.
Sagarin has Alabama at #6 with an SoS of 15. SMU is 10th with an SoS of 61.
FPI has Alabama at #4 with an SoS of 16. SMU is 13th with an SoS of 60.
The simple truth is that SMU didn't look any better than South Carolina, they looked worse. The only thing helping SMU is this participation trophy era we're in.
That is the big debate imo. The SEC wanted to say they were the best conference and brought teams in that gave them 5-7 great teams but then they allowed automatic bids to other conferences to get them into playoffs. If Texas is still in the Big 12 they dominate that conference and get in and Arizona State is not taking up a bid. It still comes down to money and why they did it from TV deals and not really attendance of games. If you look at these conference games they are not sold out. The ACC games sold 3/4 of their capacity, Big 10 was 80-85% full it looked and even SEC was 90% full even with Georgia playing in Atlanta. Let’s be honest if that was Ole Miss vs Texas the stands look lot like ACC game.what was the point of us trying to form some type of super conference in the SEC?
Forcing inclusion in sports doesn't yield good decision making.Exactly. The same logic that ranked us above Miami should also rank us above SMU. This is such an easy decision.
Athens believes in being unduly penalized for losing a conference championship.Last night was the worst possible outcome for us -- a last-second SMU loss. Especially since they came back from down 14 to tie with less than 30 seconds left.
The key point is how strongly the committee believes that a team who plays in a CCG and loses won't be unduly penalized...and exactly how they define "unduly."
I'm not as confident as a lot of folks.
I'm so tired of treating conferences as equals though, this goes back to the Big East getting a BCS bowl game even their top team was trash. The ACC and the Big 12 already get charity, neither Clemson nor Arizona St. deserve to be in the playoff. The key point is how strongly the committee believes that a team who plays in a CCG and loses won't be unduly penalized...and exactly how they define "unduly."
I thought we’d get in ‘17 and ‘23 and didn’t think we would in ‘22. This morning I don’t feel good about it. I thought about how we’ve played on the road and does the committee want to look foolish putting us in and then we get embarrassed against ND, Penn St or Texas because road Alabama shows up. With that said, I know we are the better team than SMU.Why my gut feels good this morning
FPI Miami 11 SMU 13
SOR Miami 14 SMU 15
SOS Miami 55 SMU (incl Clemson) 60
same number of losses as Miami.
And they lost last night. Not a win. They lost.
