This thread reminds me that
@selmaborntidefan use to show everyone the threads on the Saban coaching search and the after the hire threads. Some of yall would be shocked at what many were saying.
I’m also reminded that Mal Moore was seriously considering Jim Grobe, Jim Leavitt, and Rich Rodriguez for the job after Saban for a month refused to even talk to him, and even offered it to Rodriguez. It goes to show you how it’s rarely who you actually want and more of who you can get. Saban, Meyer (OSU time), and Harbaugh hires in which you get the big fish you wanted from the start are extremely rare.
So everyone can moan and groan that we didn’t get this guy and should’ve gotten this guy, but realistically who could have we gotten that was better than DeBoer? and would he win 10 plus games and be in the playoffs?
If you ask me now, I would say the best hire of this past year was Elko to aTm because he is competent coach that fits the culture. But I guarantee you we would have a large contingent here already saying “he can’t recruit in the SEC”, “success at Duke means nothing”, “he is too reliant on a quarterback”, and “we hired Duke’s leftovers”. Everyone not named Nick Saban or Urban Meyer would have instantly been doubted and ridiculed until they won a national championship.
DeBoer needs atleast 3 years to prove it, and i think we owe him that. With Milroe gone and a chance to get his players to run his system I think we will probably see more of what to expect from him.
Point is… have faith and have a little patience. If it works out then it will be a great ride, but if it doesn’t then we will try again.
