  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

    Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

Worth the 13 minutes....riveting........

In a live interview with CNN, actor James Woods details evacuating his Pacific Palisades home and how he helped rescue an elderly neighbor.

Anytime something like this happens, there's always quite a bit of commentary on who to blame......or why more steps weren't taken in anticipation of such an event, etc. etc.....

Same with the New Orleans terrorist attack.

My opinion is public officials should be held accountable to some degree.

============

In our area.....two tears ago we had two hurricanes that created a lot of flood damage as well as beach erosion. Many homes were lost and/or damaged.

Not one public official took accountability.

It took the property owners and citizens to demand a halt to future development until we could get things done to better handle storm water during events like that.

The City of Edgewater did:

The County is considering it and will discuss on the 14th:

=============

Will be interesting to see how the property owners and citizens of California react to this event in terms of change.

I heard a report today that whatever the insurance companies can't fund....will ultimately come from the entire state's property owners.

There are all kinds of wild rumors. The SIL is finding ways to blame the governor for not enough water - it was diverted out to sea - and, believe it or not, the wind. Apparently, Topanga Canyon, where my sister used to live, burned almost completely. They were worried about fire danger when they lived there. They eventually moved out to Canoga Park, which was much more open, but I see they just evacuated Canoga Park...

I'll try to post the segment later. Just now on Dan Abrams Live - it was reported that CITIZENS* detained an arson suspect in the latest (Kenneth) fire.

*With emphasis on "citizens" - and underscores my earlier comments about the folks getting involved.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.

It will be interesting. The authorities are saying too early to tell. But - if they caught him red-handed. The LA County Fire Chief said tonight that the metro system had a record amount of water on hand, so there goes the rumor about water being retained up north to preserve the smelt fish. This latest fire is much closer to my SIL...

AKA, the climate. People build in deserts, in earthquake zones, at the foot of volcanoes (or nearby), near historically flooding rivers, hurricane zones, on coastal areas etc. This was a horrific disaster, a hell on earth and I feel for all those burned out. This may not have been as easily anticipated as others but dryness and severe winds led to this disaster. I remember years ago while visiting relatives in Glendale seeing No Smoking signs on the side of many roads. The dry season coupled with Santa Anna winds adds up to a potential disaster.

What ignited the deadly California wildfires? Investigators consider an array of possibilities
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Investigators are considering an array of possible ignition sources for the huge fires that have killed at least 10 people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in the Los Angeles area.

While lightning is the most common source of fires in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association, investigators were able to rule that out quickly. There were no reports of lightning in the Palisades area or the terrain around the Eaton fire, which started in east Los Angeles County and has also destroyed hundreds of homes.
The next two most common causes: fires intentionally set, and those sparked by utility lines.

“This was once a small fire,” Lentini said. “People will focus on where the fire started, determine the origin and look around the origin and determine the cause.”

So far there has been no official indication of arson in either blaze, and utility lines have not yet been identified as a cause either.

I almost didn't finish reading this because I've seen thousands of tweets just like it already, but I'm glad I did because of the last sentence which made my eyebrows shoot up. When people in your own party are this angry, you KNOW you've messed up and your career should be over. Newsome and Bass are probably done.

This is an impressive fail for Newsome especially. It wasn't that long ago that he was considered a prime candidate for the presidency one day.

The county fire marshall says they have a record amount of water on hand and the impoundment is a right-wing rumor. He said that the problem was that the water system, fire hydrants, lines, etc. are inadequate to deliver enough water for six major fires simultaneously. IDK what municipality or mayor she's talking about or if it's even true (I doubt it - most brush is not on public lands, it's private landowners who want it), but IDK what the governor's resigning would do to help her. It's a matter of folks not liking his politics and seizing on this as an excuse...

Perhaps, but right now the county fire marshall has a vested interest is covering his or her ass, so I'll have to take that statement with a gigantic grain of salt. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the best idea to donate firefighting equipment to Ukraine. (And I'm not saying only CA did that, several states did. But when brushfires are a yearly occurrence, I'm thinking this is not the smartest contribution. That's JMO.) In any case, neither Newman nor Bass have said/done anything to help themselves the last two days and their constituency is very angry.

This being politics, however, means there's a good chance that the blame gets spread around so thinly, that no one will be held to account for this mess. In fact, I'll go on the record as making this my official prediction. Local media is killing these people now, but it remains to be seen if these stories and interviews go national.

Well, the Kenneth Fire is being investigated as a crime and one arsonist was apprehended by citizens...

Beast from TV station
Good!! Also, I'm impressed with the citizens. Not just because they caught the guy, but also because they resisted the temptation to beat this man within an inch of his life. I don't think I could have done that.

Maybe, just maybe, there's no one to blame? Except the population for moving into these areas. What the marshall is saying makes complete common sense. However, that's not enough these days. No, we have to twist ourselves into pretzels, trying to find a scapegoat. I guess it's human nature; IDK why I'd expect it to change. One word about her whining about the brush. There are indeed areas where brush removal is almost impossible. Topanga Canyon is one such area and that was the reason my sister and BIL moved. The slope ordinances around here would prevent building individual homes on them. Maybe it's time simply to prohibit rebuilding in these areas? However, outside those areas, the brush is on private property and people want it around their houses, until a fire comes. Last night, they had a guy on who'd stayed behind and saved his own house, while all the ones around him had burned down. He used his garden hose until the pressure dropped and then started using buckets and his swimming pool water. He had no foundation plantings. He'd tried to get his neighbors to give up theirs, to no avail. They liked the look. Until I know the actual facts, I'm going to say this individual is throwing up straw men...

And there's the rub. Will that actually happen? I'm betting not.

And there's some merit to the idea of not rebuilding. Frankly, I wouldn't live in CA in the first place (for reasons that have nothing to do with inept forestry/firefighting services.) But I left the Gulf Coast because hurricanes were proving to be a pain in my ass and I knew sooner or later, I'd be better off getting out while I could. Perhaps it's time for Californians in this area to consider doing the same.
