Hmm, I'm not really sure how I feel about that quote.

Me either. Before we need a "playmaker" we need someone who can manage the game the right way. If they can't do that then all we've got is a "playmaker" who's going to be no different than last year's Qb situation. Make one jaw-dropping play, then two boneheaded plays. Two steps forward three steps back type of situation.

In his defense, it would be extremely hard to replicate the level of inconsistency and ineptitude that we witnessed last year at the QB position...

Yeah, I'm actually not 100% sure on it either. He did go on to say obviously we need someone who won't turn it over in big moments and such but the emphasis seems clear.

And, it seems to me like this was a message to the QBs which is an interesting one.

After last season, I just want to see the basics done right. If we can start doing those things, I'll get a little greedy and want to start seeing some "playmaker" type of plays. But first, let's get the basics right.

“I think a lot of it is we want that playmaker,” DeBoer said. “I don’t want just a game manager out there. If we’re gonna win at the level we want to win at, we want a guy that’s gonna produce, make the big plays.”

What the actual hell is he talking about? UGA won two straight titles with Stetson Bennett…

Bama QBs should only ever be asked to take care of the football and to not be the reason for a loss.

I will give DeBoer the benefit of the doubt and assume that he assumed that the basics are there.

To colby…: IMO, Alabama is going to need a playmaker at QB to compete at the highest level. College football has changed and Alabama’s place within it has changed such that this is true. Even old school Nick Saban realized this. Doesn’t mean the QB has to be Tua or Bryce but it can’t be JPW or GM either. At least AJ or JH or BS level, maybe even “late in the year” JC, who IMO is underrated. Made some big time throws vs AU and Clemson. His throw to Ardarius on the sideline on ?3rd? down vs Clemson was one of the best and biggest throws in Bama history.

Bama starting QBs with national championships during Saban's tenure:

GMac
AJMac (2)
Jake Coker
Hurts/Tua*
Mac Jones

Without national championships:
JPW
Sims
Hurts/Tua*
Bryce Young
Nilroe

Hurts/Tua with the "*" because UGA had clearly figured Hurts out and game-planned him well enough to stop him. We don't win that game with Hurts. Only changing our entire offensive philosophy to something UGA had not planned for got us across the line, along with the miracle of 2&26. After that, Tua also didn't add any championships as the starter the next two years and that was with what was the best receiving core in college at the time

I mean maybe AJ is a bit of a playmaker - he was certainly a gunslinger (or wanted to be). Mac jones - kinda, maybe. We got big plays for sure, but a lot of times it was him delivering the ball on-time, in-stride to let his guys make plays.

I'm sure all DeBoer wants is someone that can consistently distribute the ball to the playmakers....thereby becoming a playmaker himself.

We haven't had that the last 2 years.....not even close.

Playmaking is getting the ball to the guy in space. Playmaking is making the play that’s there.

"...essentially we are not going to be satisfied with the quarterback room until it is how it is suppose to be, and it wasn’t perfect this spring."
