Yep, I think CBB thought he may have had something with Mac and making the playoffs as a rookie. Wheels came off of that organization though. Hiring a DC as OC was...at best just weird, at worst just plain moronic.

The entire team was talent-depleted. Their OL sucked, WR's sucked, QB sucked, coordinators sucked, etc. Bill had let the team dwindle down to crap.

One could only hope he's had a conversation with Saban at some point about the buzzsaw (NIL) he's about to run into.

As I have said before I think it is a combination of him wanting a new challenge, him wanting to go out of on his own terms, and him setting his son up for success down the road. Does he need the money, my guess is no. This is about legacy and the future of his son.

The funny thing is that CBB wasn't known for paying players well in the NFL. Now he's going to be dealing with NIL, where pay isn't required, its just how you improve your talent. Is he going to come in thinking, I can take limited talent (read scholarship only) and win?

He won in NE because he had Brady, who was able to elevate the slightly above average (read cheap) players around him on offence. His defenses were always complex and smart, but I believe one of the reasons Saban retired is because of the transfer portal, you couldn't develop the players into that complex defense and he saw where things were headed.

If that is the case, and Saban didn't think it was sustainable, I don't think Bill is going to have any more success.

Different topic but Rip/Liz match coverage was a new and innovative pattern match man/zone combination defense when Saban got to Alabama. It gave people fits. After years of having offensive guys on staff that left and became HC's along with guys just knowing the rules inside and out, offense's started to scheme to find the weaknesses in it. With anything, innovation and the ability to adapt is something every coach has to do if they want to continue to be successful at that level. While Saban defenses were still solid for most of his last year's, many of them had extreme deficiencies. Golding gets dumped on, as he should, but there was also issues schematically in the secondary because offensive guys knew how to give defenders false keys on routes.

Yes, I’m aware of the importance of a QB in the NFL 🙂.

He had Drew Bledsoe, in his prime, prior to Brady and was 5-14, had Testaverde in Cleveland and won a playoff game.

Had Mac who did well (Pro Bowl, 10-7) his rookie year but Belichick did a terrible job acquiring and/or keeping WR talent. Couldn’t evaluate it and didn’t want to pay for it. We all know the “brilliant” move he made in selecting Patricia as his OC for Mac.

Brady performed miracles with mediocre talent. Other franchises would grossly overvalue and over pay them only to find that their success was due to Brady (Branch, Patten, Welker, etc.). It appears CBB thought any QB could do the same but it didn’t work with Mac or anyone else.

OTOH, he at least knew the importance of the TE position. He made the decision to go with Brady after Bledsoe healed later in the year. He cultivated a healthy “next man up” attitude in NE. They had a multitude of injuries his first few years in NE and overcame them with Brady. It’s what first drew me to them - how they overcame adversity. That along with the legacies of Billy Neighbors and John Hannah.

Other than Moss for a couple of years and Gronk when he was healthy (60% of the time) Tom had mostly JAGs at NE. He made names out of WRs like Edelman, Patten, Troy Brown, Branch, Welker, Hogan, Caldwell, etc. They did little before or after their time with Brady.

Look at his OCs who were considered geniuses at NE: Weis, McDaniel. They were disasters elsewhere. O’Brien is the only one who has had any success. But most Bama fans think he is awful.
