It's sad that it's come to this, but it's 100% needed. I can't speak to Portland, even Chicago or DC - I've not lived in those places and it's been years since I even visited them - but Memphis is on the verge of being completely overtaken by violent criminals.

These forces flooding the city aren't going to address the cultural rot, lack of (value of) education, poverty, racial voting, etc., but they can at least take the streets back so families don't have the reasonable fear of leaving their homes.

FTR, I've lived in/around Memphis for the last 29 years and can tell you that virtually everyone supports this, has been begging for it...

JUST IN - STEPHEN MILLER IN MEMPHIS FOR THE FEDERAL SURGE: "This is MEMPHIS. This is the United States of America — and all that bullsh*t is DONE! It's over. It's FINISHED." "The idea that there is a square INCH of block in this city where a citizen doesn't feel safe is unacceptable." "To the Memphis Police Department, to the officers that I see sitting in front of me, we are about to provide you with a level of support you cannot even imagine. This isn't just a task force. This is a all-of-government, unlimited support operation. ATF, DEA, FBI, ICE, Department of War, every resource we have." "And they're not going to be sitting behind a desk at a keyboard. We are sending in real cops with GUNS and badges to go out with you on the street every single night making arrests." "These are people who have taken down drug cartels, kingpins, the worst criminal offenders in the United States, standing with you shoulder to shoulder to shoulder." "All we ask from you is to show up at roll call every single night with your brothers and sisters in the federal government, and to go out and get the criminals off the street." "And if you do that, I pledge to you, we will liberate this city from the criminal element that has plagued it for generations."

we need to get a handle on crime but what is being done now is setting an absolutely horrific precedent
I agree, it makes me uncomfortable. And I have my doubts that what we're seeing in most cities is even needed.

But Memphis has been careening further and further off the rails every year for a decade now. At some point SOMEONE has to say 'enough of this' and put an end to it. I wish the Memphis city leadership had a single clue, or the state (republican led) leadership cared abou the 'blue city', but neither have done a thing to address the problem of rampant violence.

Eventually, when you've seen so many friends and loved ones terrorized or even killed by it, you get to the point that you don't really care what rules are being bent, broken, or kicked in and stomped on if it means a reduction in the violence.

So much blame to go around - directed at people on both sides of the political aisle - but most Memphians I know are sick of being pawns in these stupid political games and just want some relief.

Trump administration approval of new abortion drug infuriates the right

The FDA has little latitude to reject generic versions of approved drugs, but that hasn’t stopped an outcry from abortion opponents.

Finally another issue on which i can express agreement with the Trump Administration. I hope we don’t see them give in to the pro-life extremists.

Am I being redundant by calling Dear Leader a lying sack of doodoo?

Remember when he and his doofus Veep lied about not knowing anything about Project 2025?

To the gullible who bought this lie, you own this.

I don't think anyone believed him about that. Project 2025 was out there for all to see... I'm still amazed at how many haven't even read an overview. It is a straightforward Christian Nationalism takeover plan as was seen in the dark fringes of the early internet. Poorly conceived, unrealistic in implementation in the modern world, and completely and utterly authoritarian. And it will not be what most conservative Christians think it will be for them and their families and communities.

Of course, we can expect an imminent "both sides" diatribe....as if the Democrats are guilty of this same level of malfeasance. Remember when Obama was going to send blue helmet troops to take away your guns, and remember when old WW2 POW camps were being renovated to hold Christians in FEMA camps?

Remember when Obama landed Blackhawk helicopters on apartment buildings and spilled out ICE agents to terrorize the occupants? Oh, that only happened now. My bad.

This week, President Donald Trump announced the next in a long line of vanity projects: TrumpRX, a forthcoming, federally branded website where Pfizer sells steeply discounted drugs in exchange for a three-year exemption from his proposed 100 percent tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals. Imagine a strip mall furniture store with a permanent, flashy 70-percent-off sale, masking the fact that prices were inflated in the first place. TrumpRx, slated to launch in early 2026, is no different—a government-run platform that promises savings while hiding costs.
If this sounds familiar, it's because the blueprint was drawn a decade ago. Washington shoved through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with the same central-planning arrogance, resting on monopolistic dealmaking and government-dictated price regulation.

Trump was one of the ACA's loudest critics. He called it a "disaster" and "virtually useless" in 2017, and was still posting "Obamacare sucks" in 2023. He was, for all his bluster, correct.

But he never took the time to understand the economics of the mistake, and now, he's repeating it. TrumpRx employs the same toolkit: One company receives favorable treatment, the government demands discounts in exchange for tariff protection, and Washington exerts raw power with no regard for the consequences. This leads to squeezed margins, less research, smaller generic drugs being driven out, and higher prices in the long run.

The Democrats have their issues, but I don't think any of them ever envisaged an authoritarian takeover of the magnitude that the 2025 plan lays out. Things would have been mediocre under Harris, but with Repubs controlling congress, we would have muddled along and watch the deficit grow same as before. Albeit more slowly than the current budget... And I seriously doubt she would ever had told her constituents that if they voted for her, they'd never have to worry about an election again.

Calling Obamacare a disaster is a bit much. It did expand coverage and most of the problems are due to the Republicans continuously fighting the notion that everyone should be covered.

Working in medicine for the past thirty years... The private insurance market is inefficient and costly. A national plan wouldn't be a panacea either. But we could certainly do better if we didn't have to deal with profit extraction on every level by private companies aided by their government allies.

This is just another grift ultimately... Follow the cash...

Which is why the Trump administration has been following it as their playbook from the day he was inaugurated.

A few of us keep bringing it up now and then, but most Trump supporters around here continue to hand-wave it away, like they do all of Trump's disgusting, illegal actions.
