Battered Quarterback Syndrome: A Discussion on Ty Simpson

Whether it's this example or swapping Tua in for Hurts in 2017, I dont know why coaches would not try any player if the outcome results in winning hardware. We should have subbed Hurts for Tua in 2018 against Clemson to win that NC.

You owe it to everyone staff, players to try win a championship game. And you should have that talk before it happens.

If its his back I don't know if having a few weeks is going to make that much of a difference in healing. He may just need an entire offseason.

This is my honest view too.

I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer.

But anyone who’s had a moderate to severe back issue (muscle) knows how debilitating it can be and how time consuming the recovery can be.

Plus that’s not accounting for continuing to not let it heal by getting walloped by 300+ pound monsters every single week and hitting the ground.

It’s been months and it’s no better if not worse.

He’s trying to valiantly play through it but it’s not going to just go away until the off season.

Neither here nor there he definitely needs another year starting in CFB.

He's referring to the infamous tale that Barron would have picked a pass in the end zone but couldn't raise his arms due to injury (torn pec). Alabama fans have speculated that would have won us the game and another title.
It could have won the game but could not have another title as Alabama already had 2 losses, AU was the third.

Would have knocked AU out of the championship game though.

My back injury after my bike accident took a full year.

He's 22 years old and has some of the absolute best athletic medical care in the world available. I expect two weeks will make a substantial difference in his play.
He had a two week bye week in the latter part of the season and that didn't seem to help. Granted I haven't seen it officially reported, but the internet chatter seems to say he has a back injury. I've had back injuries and just simply "bruises" (when I was young) and they just don't ever seem to heal without complete rest.

I don’t remember it being in the end zone, but it was a big gainer for the barn that ended up as a TD. He could have intercepted it or at least knocked it down if he could have just lifted his arms, something fairly useful for a DB in pass defense.

Yes… he thudded a receiver with his arm down and was a major gain because he couldn’t wrap up. CNS pushed the limits on playing injured guys.

We had backup safeties… but they were pretty inexperienced. I think we had a walk on who had played a good bit and was out with a knee leaving us pretty thin.

Of course, I don't know if Ty has a back injury or not. But it is a simple explanation that covers most of the observations.

I've had a couple of back injuries including when I was not much older than he is now. I'll just second what everyone here is saying -- you don't just get over one in 10-12 days, especially not if you are being forced into activity most days.

He seems like a fine young man and an intense competitor. I hope he is making smart decisions about his long-term future. I can't say that I always did in my 20s.

Concerning the Mark Baron play. IIRC, the play happened around midfield. Baron went up to defend a pass play but couldn't raise his injured arm. The completion was made and I think AU score on the play. The thinking/debate was if Mark was not injured, he would have broken up the play.

Seems like this was the "sCam back" game that propelled them to their lone NC season since they were API in the late 1950s.

I believe that diagnosis is a rather broad umbrella. I certainly know of cases where people are unable to get out of bed because the pain is so bad. I know of others, including my father, who found out they had a "herniated disk" while being treated for a different condition with no symptoms at all.

And, this may be nothing but internet speculation gaining momentum because a bunch of people who have no idea are saying it to each other -- kind of like when the president "died" a few weeks ago.

They have now formally opened up a can of worms by selecting against Florida State for their QB being gone.
I guess we were smart enough to leave ours in the game. I say that kind of with blue font because I am hoping we didn't jeopardize his health in any way. I don't think our medical staff would have let him play if it was a super bad injury.

I would certainly hope not. Although if he had a herniated disk, you'd need an MRI to find that and he could have been injured at Auburn and then not had one till after the SEC game.

Oh it happened: https://www.rollbamaroll.com/2010/11/26/1838184/mark-barron-played-with-torn-pectoral-muscle

But I forgot Bama was already out of contention...

I remember it like it was yesterday...

Staring in disbelief how he not only didn't intercept the pass.

But how he appeared to essentially "let" the receiver catch it...

Shortly thereafter, I remember dismantling the media stand and rearranging the furniture in the family room, out of a combination of incredulity and frustration...

Had some splainin' to do the following morning to my then-girlfriend, who'd been asleep upstairs... 😐
