Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. IU...

Grubb is getting lot of hate but early in the year he was getting a lot of praise how much better he was then we had. Did he forget how to call plays or was he handcuffed with a quarterback that was clearly injured and didn’t have the ability to throw the ball down the field the last 2 months? The offense is designed to throw the ball down the field. Which is what we were doing to start the year.
I think the problem that most of us have with Grubb is him trying to outsmart himself at times.
Take todays game for example where on 4th and 1 we try a jet sweep of all things instead of putting a big ol D lineman in the backfield to run interference for a BIG running back ( which ,yes, we don't have which is part of the point) and just get one yard and continue the drive. We did it early in the season and it worked. Why not do that now?

Look I have hesitated to divulge why I wasn’t very high on this season to begin with because you would have the same reaction from the “never DeBoer fans” that you are getting now. So here it is:

At the REC scrimmage Courtney Morgan was the big speaker. He basically came out with a “temper your expectations” kinda statement. He basically said the quarterback play was a mystery and we struck out at Oline. He basically strongly hinted at us using the portal hard for the 26 year because we struck out in 25. They kinda made it out that Ty wasn’t their first choice entering the season nor were they positive about the running abilities of this team.

A former Alabama DLine great was also there and believed our front line defensive players were great but we had serious depth problems at DL and LB.

I thought 9-3 with an outside chance of a SECCG was our best outcome if things go good with 10 or more wins as an over achieving team based on vibes.

I’m going to spoil it for you right now… we won’t go into summer without knowing who our quarterback is. Texas Tech is offering Russell truckloads. I don’t think Mack vs Russell will turn into Milroe vs Simpson.

I think we need to be a little more patient and cautious about wanting to run off the head man. However I think changes within the staff are essential and non negotiable if he wants to survive. Keep in mind Cristobal had to make tough staff choices at Miami recently after getting embarrassed time and time again. Day had to too. You just can’t make those moves in season so thinking they won’t happen are very premature.
This is why I am on Tidefans and read/keep up with the threads. Great information comes out sooner or later.

1) staff changes are happening but who and what quality is the question.

2) I believe Russell will be the quarterback next year even if we have to deal with the growing pains of it.
I can deal with growing pains for him.
I really think he is a special talent. I think he is gonna light it up.
Just gotta get a O Line to block for him and a running game.

Because we see new coaches actually preventing a mass exodus all the time during a coaching transition
No, but it’s disingenuous to say there wasn’t a wealth of talent. You focused on what I tacked on at the end, which, was his job to retain players. And, in 2023-2024 we really didn’t see a mass exudous like teams today. Those 40 players that everyone talks about included players that left before Nick retired, those that graduated and/ or declared for the NFL, etc. I believe 11 left after Nick left, that included Proctor, 5 players transferred in with DeBoer. Saying 40 transferred gives the impression Bama played with only 45 scholarshipped players last year . We didn’t, there were 82.

they're 13-3 and going to the Playoffs after firing the bum.
Seattle fans warned us about his "offense". DeBoer fate will be determine how much longer he's willing to hitch his wagon with Grubb.
I do have to make sure one aspect is clear. You might not like Grubb's playcalling and I'm not all that excited with how things have gone with him.

But the run trends are not a Grubb invention. DeBoer even without Grubb has consistently had his offenses kind of devolve in the running game, and one of Grubb's best year's running the ball was actually when DeBoer wasn't his head coach. If you look at last year's numbers even, you'll see use of running backs were about the same usage rate, but Milroe ran so much it obscured that. Of course they ran better but that matches the trend where year to year DeBoer's teams tend to get worse at running the ball and being bad at running the ball is a consistent thing.

So sure part of the issue is Grubb, but this whole let the QB do it all and weak running game is not just a Grubb feature, it's a DeBoer feature. Alabama actually relied just as much on the QB last year as well for example, and on Penix in Washington, etc...

It has been said repeatedly, but today should be clear proof that you need a balanced offense attack with a meaningful running game. The inability to run prevents you from controlling tempo, getting first downs, wearing down the opponent, setting up the pass, keeping your own D rested and much more. We have no running game. So everything else puts stress on the QB and WR to produce each and every time.

So frustrating to watch and know we have to also play a less than healthy Simpson for weeks because we dont have a solid alternative.
Agree, you are seeing shift back to balance football. Its showing itself big in the CFP the teams advancing can control the LOS running and passing.

When money is involved, there are fewer ways to win. We see that in the NFL. No OL and you basically win nothing and probably end up with an injured QB.

Isn't missing on players in 25 the fault of the staff? It makes me think the staff isn't good at coaching up a player.

I also dont see how Ty Simpson wouldnt be the starter next season if he came back seeing how we didnt provide any sort of running game all season. How much easier was Mendoza's day today because he had a running game? We absolutely screwed Ty over by not being able to correct tbe OL and their run blocking. It sounds like the staff "missed" more on coaches than they did players.

I'm not happy with the postgame conference. DeBoer should have walked up to that podium with some of his assistant coaches, not two players.
I believe that is standard. I watched the other teams press conference and it was same thing. Head coach one defensive guy and 1 offensive guy.

Indiana offensive line today. 3 redshirt seniors and 2 redshirt juniors. So all 5 guys have 4 or 5 years of college ball. 3 were at Indiana all years and 1 came from Notre Dane and 1 from Ohio State.
Yes, Indiana is made up of 23-24 year olds. It’s like playing BYU.
