Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. IU...

By this logic, the offense cannot run the ball "by design".
No good team gets worse as the season progresses. Seattle saw the problem before we did
Simpson couldn’t throw it deep the safeties were up tight on the line with no threat to get beat deep. The defense dictates what the play call is. That is why you see every team look over to the sidelines then the play is either changed or kept. They are reading the safeties linebackers and corners on how they are playing. If they are playing single high tight on corners you go over the top. If they are playing two deep it is a run call or if the linebackers are up night a 10-20 yard pass in front of safeties who are playing about 25- 30 yards pass the line. The problem after Ty got injured was the safeties were not threatened by the deep ball (1 pass over 25 yards in last 8 games). The offensive line was also not getting any push so teams were stopping the run with 4 or 5 in the box and they other 6-7 guys all in a 10-25 yard range. That makes a lot of congestion to try and complete passes.

Depends: if part of your "offensive philosophy" is being tough/mean/strong it could definitely be part of the problem.
To your point and I've mentioned this before, he has an opportunity for introspection and determine if he sees the need to change his philosophy or not. If not then next season may be his last.
I guess I'm being hopefully, but I hope he kind of sees the light and realizes what he can actually do at Alabama is he blends that tough, smash mouthed SEC style football this region can produce, with his offensive innovation. It doesn't have to be either or.

I kind of thought he'd have that moment after the Michigan game, where his team, which had 10 NFL draft picks, and 26 5th and 6th year seniors (so as much experience/talent as you could hope for) still got absolutely physically dominated. And I think that probably was part of why he made the switch, realizing he could have more talent at Alabama.

But there's no corresponding philosophical change! He's treating those big SEC guys like they're still playing on the west coast! And I have to point out, sure it works great sometimes! He's beaten Georgia, twice! But, after another embarrassment may be he finally sees that he can use that Alabama talent, not to try to build a super version of the flawed Washington team, but a different version, one that's bigger tougher, meaner, and stronger. If he makes that shift, I think there's hope that the mentality can come with it.

First of all,

This is saban and CKD issue at same time.

We haven't had good running game for a while. This is issue that started with Saban and it spilled over to CKD. There are few things that needs to be addressed. If Mario with Miami can turn around and correct things in one year, CKD can do the seame.

1. Fix the run game. To do so, Let go of RB coach and hire a better one. Let some RBs transfer out, and get in better RBs.

2. OL- I don't necessary think this is 100 percent on players, but We can always get better OL though. We need Guard and Center position to shore up and we can do it through portal. Fire OL coach. He didn't do great job at all, and it showed badly on tapes.

3. Pllaycalling- CKD needs to have a serious conversation with Grubb about his playcalling. There are some some people are noticing about teandicies within the offense: Someone pointed that out to me on twitter.

I think we need to move on from Grubb. But that's just me.

On Defense:
Wommack is one heck of a coach and He's good at his job, but the issue is run fit defense and that has bit us many times throughout the season. We need to bring in someone who knows SEC Defense well. Steal a coach from Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas.. just someone... elevate the defense to another level. Shoot, get Pruitt in.

On defense, I think we're okay, just gotta let Roach go.

Portal targets: OL, DL, and OLB.

Honestly, given how things went down this season, I'm glad the team is 11-4.. They improved a lot compared to last year and I think they will figure it out eventually.

I'm not on the fire DeBoer bandwagon, but if anyone thinks Saban loses 4 games this season and gets humiliated like that against Indiana then I'd like some of what you're having.

He wouldn’t, but he’s also not our coach anymore and never will again. There isn’t another Saban in college football, and probably won’t be for a long time.

The point is this: Alabama as it exists today is not winning a championship. Any championship. They may go 10-2 but they aren’t winning the title. MSU may go 4-8. Neither team is winning a championship. That was my point.
And that's the new playoff era for you. Still not realistic comparison. You can't compare last years Super Bowl playoff teams with the worst in league. That's something we need to temper as fans now that we are here and the playoffs are likely to expand. That's like Notre Dame refusing to go to a bowl game because they didn't get picked in the playoffs. The mentality of "If I'm not the best, then I must be horrible!" Not so and an overreaction.

At some point we are going to have to break this expectation that we are going to be the National Champion every year and if we ain't then we need to fire everyone. We will never get anyone that wants to take the HC job at Alabama. We "lucked" into Saban because he wasn't successful in the NFL.

We just need to “temper the expectations.” If true, that’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard from a “representative” of the University of Alabama football program.

4th and 1, Wildcat formation, IU TO, Punt to shift for “freeze” play, burn our own TO. Come back out in Wildcat and run… jet sweep! Incompetent. Seen a better play call sequence in mediocre HS football in the bluegrass. Put you 6th best OL, put a fat guy in the backfield, dot the I and get the yard. Instead we saw a slip screen out of I twins later on…. I don’t understand.
That is when I realized their football situational awareness was on the clueless level, also it was on our end of the field, against a good team, with a lot of game left to play, Debore has to make some changes or Debore will be history,I'll give him a yr or two, otherwise he goes and Byrne goes with him, we need real football guys hiring the next coach.

We had 40 transfers out. That is still alot of depth we lost that is playing somewhere else.

True that 40 is the real number, and i agree with you that we had a talent drain, but some of that is noise. Bennett, Clayborne, howard, Courtney, Deerman, Willoughby, Ellis, Skehan, Neighbors, Porter, O'Quinn, Craig and bellenfant were't guys that matter. Even guys like Goodwine, Perry, Blackshire, jackson, story, buchner and Williams were not the real issue. a big chunk of that first group were walkons anyway

To me it's not the number of dudes, but losing the key dudes

The real issue is that we lost guys like Sayin, Downs, Amos, Little, and Ricks who all would have been competing or starting. Even Kitselman to be honest and Holstein maybe...

The glaring issue is that we lost T Ferguson, Seth M and J Brockermeyer. Not that our OL coach would have made good decisions with them, but Ferg and Brock would have been better (and played better) than most of our other IOL this year,

I'm in agreement with a lot of what you said, but just start looking at the run game everywhere DeBoer has been. You can't see it last year because it counts Milroe's runs but without it Alabama would have had an extremely low ranked running team (even WITH Milroe's running it was still in the 40s).

Another example would be 2019 Indiana, when DeBoer was OC. That wasn't a bad team, they won 8 games but they were 106 in rushing! Let's check the year before he arrived, 82, which isn't great but you see the noticeable drop.

So, Milroe left. Offense didn't get fixed but he was the whipping boy. This year, it's Grubb. And I'm not saying either did great, but I'm saying until DeBoer himself changes his approach, these problems will continue.

If there's a big time commitment to changing, they'll bring in some new coaches and both DeBoer and Grubb will listen to what they have to say like it's the gospel because those guys will be experts in establishing the run game, run blocking, and physical play. But if all you do is remove Grubb, you don't solve the problem.

So personally I'd like to see both stay actually, but taking some of that 1.5 million Sheridan money (which is about a third of what the entire Indiana staff was making) and go get some coaches with the right attitude and skill-set to address the obvious issues.

I’m not disagreeing with you. I don’t expect to win championships every year. I do expect Alabama to compete for them. We were really not competitive on a championship level this season.

Our 10-2 regular season looked great on paper but we were never competitive against Georgia in Atlanta or Indiana tonight. Totally outclassed in almost every way.

Had we lost both games 28-21 or something similar, I’d have hope we could get there next year. I don’t have that hope tonight. Serious overhaul is needed if we are going to sniff another title under this staff. I don’t want DeBoer to be fired. I want him to be able to fix it.

Yeah, most of those guys left before Nick left. But yeah, you are right . There was a dearth of talent after Nick left. View attachment 55009

But here is the thing… 22 was the most talented team ever recruited according to most recruiting sources said. Lost 2 games with Bryce Young. So I don’t really put faith in recruiting rankings anymore. We have had a bad development staff since 19 and most of it was covered up by elite quarterback play.

23 is a team that I gave heck but it may have been a combination of the luckiest Alabama team in history and Saban’s best coordinator hires on both sides in a single year. Rees and Steele don’t get enough credit for pulling a truly lackluster staff to a 12 win season in a single year.

Indiana has better development coaches in two years than what we have had in the last 5. They 100% earned this win over developing smarter less talented players. Whether they last is unknown. They are still the Royals competing with the Yankees and Dodgers. I think our situation is still competitive NIL wise but we can’t live off talent. We desperately need to better returns on development. To go back to the baseball analogy we are the Cardinals competing with the Dodgers and Yankees. We got money and can get great talent, but we can’t buy a roster and just say “go win a championship” with that talent.
