If You Could Pursuade CNO to do One Thing Differently...

I'm very grateful and happy he's our coach. But that doesn't mean there aren't areas to tweak and improve. He's human.
egos aside. None of us are qualified to do so. So it’s just a venting exercise

Again. Valid thread. I answered your question. I’d tell him to ignore unqualified experts

It means, Alabama fans don’t deserve him. And we keep proving it. So I hope he ignores stuff like this.

But it’s a valid thread I just hope he ignores arm-chair experts and does his thing.
He has been amazing for Bama but does that mean he is beyond reproach? We can't question his roster construction or how his system probably will never lead to a title?

I love the state of Bama basketball but that doesn't mean we can't question if there is a way to be better or wonder if his system needs tweaked. And I am confident he is not reading fan forums so he does not need to worry about all of our unqualified opinions.

As I said earlier, this is a hypothetical "what you'd tell him." I'll never speak a word to the man unless we magically bump into each other, and then if we do, I'll ask him what kind of hair gel he uses. :)

Feel free to question. Criticize. Critique. I don’t care personally.

He asked a question. I answered it. I don’t think we have a single poster qualified to critique him.

I’d encourage him to ignore all of us with regards to his program.

I think people want to find something wrong. So have at it.

Do you not agree that when we don't win something went wrong? I'm not looking to find something wrong; it's looking to be resolved! If the purpose of a discussion board is to only cheer when we win, it'll get pretty boring here.

Honest question: When you post on the football board, as you've done recently, about your concerns with how CKD is handling the transfer portal, does that mean you think you are qualified to critique him?

Every time we lose a football game, we have HUGE threads about what went wrong and what we need to do to fix it. Does that mean every person who has an idea thinks they are qualified to coach the Alabama football team?

I just don't see how a discussion like this is any different than those on the football board.

TideFans has always existed for educated discussion... and though none of us are college coaches basketball is basketball and there are some on this board who indeed do know the game. It doesn't take a college coach to see CNO doesn't utilize timeouts and we've paid for that underutilization in some games. It's also doesn't take a college coach to realize that a kryptonite for us the past few years has been teams that have bigs inside. This isn't unique to CNO though. Over Saban's tenure, many educated FB posters noticed some "kryptonites" with him also. He won national championships despite those weaknesses though... and CNO may very well do the same thing in basketball. Only time will tell.

As far as "UA deserving Nate Oats", indeed we do. He likes the Tuscaloosa area and his family has become part of our community. He's paid handsomely and has resources to work with here. However, in the age of NIL, every team with a respectful checkbook should have high expectations. IF all of this was in pre-NIL times, many posters would likely be far more passive in criticism - myself included. But living in an NIL age, our basketball program is experiencing exactly what Indiana and Ole Miss fans are experiencing in football. Sure... it's better than it's ever been, but we shouldn't expect any less than a "blue-blood program" now. I'm glad CNO is our coach and hope he's here a long time... but I also hope there's some progress in these areas (if that's possible).

As far as what we say, I can guarantee CNO doesn't pay attention to message boards or social media - coaches don't do that unless they're losing the program and we're not anywhere close to that. And I can also guarantee if we can see these things, he can also. I hope TideFans will always be a place where people can discuss all UA sports... and even vent at times. It's what has driven the website to become what it is today.

I’m going to go with get players who want to play the entire game of basketball.

I said tongue in cheek earlier this year that it was just easier to get the ball after a made basket than it was to play defense. Unfortunately, I think this is the prevailing mindset.

It might be easier to find a lockdown defensive player and teach him to use that athleticism to get to the basket than it is to take an elite scorer and teach them to play defense.

I don’t think it’s him.

I thinks it's fair also to point out that when players (especially from portal) don't pan out as envisioned, those misses are more magnified than in sports with more players. It doesn't take but one or two misses for things to go awry from the original plans.

I NEVER SAID YOU CANT COMPLAIN OR CRITICIZE OATS. I just said none of us are qualified to do so and I hope he would ignore it.

But you have every right to do so.

Figure out how to keep his players healthy. I don't remember any time in Alabama basketball when the team had so many players missing games because of injuries. Wimp Sanderson was, from I have read, tough on his players, and I don't think his teams were affected like today's team.

I wonder at times if these guys have contracts that talk about playing with injuries. It’s been way more prominent across several college teams. That can’t be an accident.

I’m guessing the number of sit outs has to do with contract language. Or NIL stuff. But that’s just speculation.

Honestly, who is to say he hasn’t tried recruiting a big man to bang inside? Those types don’t exactly fit this type of offense. We attract shooters with the green light to fog it up from behind the line and who are able to run the floor. Big OLine type bodies to play inside don’t run the floor at the pace we’d need them to.

Bingo. True “Bigs” don’t want to play in Oats’ system, and Oats doesn’t want a true “big”.

It is what it is, and personally there’s been a ton more good than bad. It sounds good to say let’s just get one true big, but that’s not who he is and I believe we just have to accept that fact.

The basketball program hasn’t been this good and consistent in a long time. So in my opinion we have accept the little bit of bad that’s going to come with a whole lot of good.

I know some say he will never win a championship with his style. That may be true, but I wouldn’t be so confident to say that.

He’s already won the SEC reg season, and SEC tourney twice now, made 3 sweet 16s, elite 8, and a final 4. All in 7 seasons.

Sherrell may prove to be the perfect fit.

Bediako and Cliff were rim protectors but couldnt play out. But we’re both solid on the pick/roll. Aiden may prove to be the best.

Our best season, we had Nick Pringle and Wague.

Be ok with midrange jump shots especially when we’re ice cold from 3. Can’t go on long scoring droughts, especially in big games.

I wonder what the true definition of “mid-range” is. Because a 6 footer in the lane, isn’t the same shot as a 15 footer from the baseline. But may be categorized the same way.

All I know is that the percentage from 10 feet and 3 pt range is eerily close to each other. So midrange (mathematically) isn’t a smart shot in his approach.
