The Film Guy - Bama's offseason additions

Chris Booker is the 6'3 295 lb OL'man that he REALLY, REALLY likes and has him as one of only a few players that he can already say will be playing in the NFL. He's the type of linemen DeBoer and company are looking for. He's very athletic and twitchy and will probably play at 310-315 lbs. Film Guy felt like the "big and slow" players we had on the OL last season hurt us. But it seems all of those types are now out of the system and now Bama has OL to fit what DeBoer and company want to do in the run game.

When you watch the film of Booker you quickly see he's not "oversized and lumbering", but leaner than what we've had but very quick and athletic. The kid likes to pancake his defender, needs a lot work on footwork, which Film Guy said will get cleaned up when he gets on campus.

Regarding the portal additions, he said he didn't feel like Bama got anyone that was a "sure thing". But, to be honest, when it comes to the portal, most players every team brings in aren't "sure things". Those types of players are rarely in the portal.

I think we are going to have to hope the new OL coach can develop these OL we brought in. They were mostly young so it's not a big surprise that their film isn't popping at this point. There just isn't a tougher position to play than OL. Experience does matter. It doesn't guarantee you to be better but I don't recall anyone who was just great out of the gate. I will say I like how Booker relished putting people on their back. This isn't a game for nice people.

Ultimately....and this won't be popular, but I don't care.....I think we are going to be emotional and weak again.

I don't think we have the culture needed to win championships. We rely on being disrespected or doubted as motivation. We should be relying on internal motivation and drive....not this nonsense external crap that cannot be sustained long term.

The spring and summer are when championships are won. What you're doing in the offseason is where you're really becoming the team you need to be.

What's the attitude in the program now? What's the culture? If it isn't about mauling or dominating your opponent, then there's a problem....I don't care who you are.

This has nothing to do about DeBoer not being Saban.....it is about the culture instilled in the program. Saban was even faltering towards the end of his tenure. Maybe its just the new way of things in modern college football, I don't know.

Being soft and finesse does not win in big time college football. Using external motivation is a fool's gold....it won't last past getting hit in the mouth.

I just don't think we'll see much difference this next season. Sure, we'll win games...and then get physically outmatched several times and look unprepared.

The booker kid looks good,I hope his play transfers to college ball, sometimes it doesn't, it's only takes one lead dog to affect your teammates on the line ,he looks good hopefully he is the difference maker

I'm really trying to wait and see how this all shakes out. Interested to see Jess's take in his spring preview. A depth chart that I could research would really help.

My gut feel right now is we took mostly the portal leftovers and we're taking a wild swing with some of those players and the new OL coach...hope we connect and knock it out of the park. Our HS recruiting is still pretty awesome but I worry that the cycle is going to be that we pay them when they're too raw to really contribute and then when they're ready they move on to another team. Probably 90% of the teams out there worry that their investment in players will ultimately benefit their competition. IF the OL makeover works out a lot of other things could fall into place. There's a lot ifs and hopes since it's pretty much a new team and a real wild-card coming in to fix our biggest problem.

Now, I'll get back to waiting to see how all this shakes out.

I agree, If you can’t get motivated by wearing that Script A , and what it has meant to college football , you probably belong somewhere else.

I agree, but some fire needs to be instilled into this group to want to play with aggression and anger and be willing to destroy everything in its path. If they can't develop that kind of attitude, then you know what will happen

One of the points he makes in the video is just to make him seem smart. Seriously, of course you don’t know what the transfer linemen will do in Tuscaloosa, same as any school, or how well a HS recruit will play. Even if they are highly rated, doesn’t mean they are the right fit.

I took it more as a disclaimer to acknowledge that until these players actually play, its hard to say what they're going to do. But he would give his assessment based on what he saw on film. He did say he really wasn't impressed with the tape of kid we got from Miss St.
