Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I don't make many post, but here is my .03 cents worth. I really think that another year is needed to completely close the book on how good CMS has done. But the thing that bothers me is the things I hear about losing discipline, control of the them and the confidence of the players. If this true then that changes everything. If a coach looses this then there are big problems. I really don't want us to get in another situation of trying to find someone who will take the job. If we change what we need is to get out of this coaching carosell(spelling).

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

I think the longer the University waits to put out an official statement, the more likely that CMS is a goner.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I voted time's up.
Failing to punch in a TD, yet going for two twice, and then calling precious timeouts when you can't decide to kick a FG or go for two? A delay of game penalty prior to a FG attempt in the last game of the year? Just a few of the many glaring facts that show Shula is not fit to lead. This team is more talented than 6-6. Coaches have repeatedly failed to put them in a position to win games. Last year was a magical fluke where Alabama simply got every bounce (and made every FG thanks to "Money") before playing Auburn and LSU.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

This will be my only post on this subject:

I'd like to think that the UA leadership and Athletics/Football program discuss what needs to be done and make good decisions to move the program forward, for the benefit of all involved, rather than have it all speculated and played out in the media and discussion boards all while dragging a good man and his family (and the team) down a weary and unnecessary path.

I say focus on Alabama hopefully getting to a bowl game this year and cheer them on! Everything else will be taken care of. I've got plenty more important things to do than worry about this stuff.

Finebaum claims that if we get Spurrier, we would win the SEC championship in is first year.

Of course that could happen anyway with the talent on board. Big limb doofus climbed out on there.

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

1) He is not an old coach that is set in his ways. I strongly believe that he can make adjustments that will correct the situation.
- Yup, since all year we made significant corrections to the problems that started with Hawaii, running and blocking.
2) Shula showed a tremendous amount of character in taking over at UA when we were facing the worst part of the sanctions.
- Yup, since he had so much going for him in another job....
3) Things like dicipline, work ethic, weight room lethargy, ...etc are Fixable. We can make our offensive linemen stronger, that is something that can be addressed.
- Strong linemen cannot block if they are not shown the proper technique by the line coach. If the line coach is sucking it up, it's up to the head coach to replace him.
4) We all knew we needed to be patient. Yet, as soon as our patients was put to the test we waffled and decided Shula must go. I certainly hope Witt and Moore show more patients then we do.
- 4 years of losing to auburn could make anyone's patience go to an all-time low
5) The lack of patients with a first time head coach who has worked extremely hard to help bail out his alma mater that got itself into a horrible jam will not be lost on the the coaches at the top of your lists.
- I doubt he see's it as bailing out the university, but instead a chance to get a coaching career going again
6) Our lack luster performance this year is only partially Shula's doing.
- Are you Mike Shula secretly posting under the name Bama 13-0? Have you seen the play calling? No matter if we blame the offensive coordinator or the players, Shula is still the general in charge...everything comes back to him.
7) There are definite positives to build upon, positives that Shula brought to this team.
- Losing to State, terrible playcalling, a lack of leadership, no motivation, a 3 game losing streak, 4 losses to auburn in a row, 2-8 in the last 10 SEC games, the worst td ratio in the conference....what are the positives?

Re: Opinion : Is Shula Staying or Is He Fired

No, based on the sherades of the past few days I'd say Shula will not be fired. I sincerely hope that Witt and Moore are not going to react to a bunch of fans on message boards that have their knickers in a twist and a bunch of trigger happy reporters by firing Shula.

Here's a clue for many of you. You need to analyze your desire to keep or fire Shula and figure out what part of that is based on pure emotion. When information about the BOT, Witt, Shula, or Moore comes your way then keep you emotions in check and try to analyze the information in a rational, logical manner.

Here are some logical reasons why Shula should be retained, and why I believe he will be retained:

1) He is not an old coach that is set in his ways. I strongly believe that he can make adjustments that will correct the situation.
2) Shula showed a tremendous amount of character in taking over at UA when we were facing the worst part of the sanctions.

Many on here need to think beyond just the last 3 games. Go back 4 years and think about where where Shula started, what obstacles he had to overcome, what his experience level was and how much he's learned so far. You just might come to the conclusion that Shula has done a good job under very difficult circumstances. Not a perfect job, but a good job.

You said you were going to list some "logical" reasons, where are they?

1. You're partially right. He's a young coach set in his way and what have you seen in the past 4 years that tells you that he will make any changes?

2. What character? He was about to walk the plank with Wannstadt at Miami and was rescued by BAMA and with a SIZEABLE pay raise.

3. A guy who grew up in a football environment should already be well aware of the importance of these things and shouldn't have to be faced with being fired to embrace them.

4. "Patients" belong in a hospital or under a doctor's care. Our fan base has shown great patience with Shula, but after 4 years of no progress, our patience has worn out.

5. I don't think so. Those guys actually know football and are probably rolling on the floor watching Shula on the sidelines.

6. Care to elaborate on what part of the player's and staff's performances don't fall under the auspices of Shula's control?

7. Pretty broad statement. Care to give us a few examples?

Given his reputation for stubborness and apparent loyalty to a staff with glaring weaknesses, the question is not "can he?" but "will he?"
2) Shula showed a tremendous amount of character in taking over at UA when we were facing the worst part of the sanctions.
I agree, but he was also paid handsomely for it.
3) Things like dicipline, work ethic, weight room lethargy, ...etc are Fixable. We can make our offensive linemen stronger, that is something that can be addressed.
Sure they are, but were those problems present when he got here?
4) We all knew we needed to be patient. Yet, as soon as our patients was put to the test we waffled and decided Shula must go. I certainly hope Witt and Moore show more patients then we do.
Patience is a good thing. Do you think Alabama has been more competitive in year 4 against UT, LSU, and Auburn than in the 1st year?
5) The lack of patients with a first time head coach who has worked extremely hard to help bail out his alma mater that got itself into a horrible jam will not be lost on the the coaches at the top of your lists.
The seeming acceptance of being uncompetitive against the top teams in the SEC is not lost on opposing coaches either.
6) Our lack luster performance this year is only partially Shula's doing.
It's either a)Him or b)his assistants or c)his players. Either way, it's his job to make sure the performance is improved.
7) There are definite positives to build upon, positives that Shula brought to this team.
How long before the negatives outweigh the positives?

Think about whether this team is more or less talented than it was 4 years ago and whether the talent has been utilized to its maximum potential. In year one, Bama took UT to overtime in a high scoring affair, in year four they couldn't get 16 points to force overtime.

I'm not one of the people calling for Mike Shula's head, but I've definitely moved from hard-core supporter towards the fence of doubt.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

Shula is going nowhere. He will grace our sidelines again next year. The buyout is $4 million, which will not materialize. The only way we don't pay the buyout is if Shula resigns. The only way he resigns is if he has another equally paying job waiting on him. We know this is not the case. We get to enjoy being "really close" six or seven time next year--then we move on.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I voted for another year. I think I am in the minority her but if you go back and read the posts right after he was hired it talked about patience and 2006 being our worst year due to few Jrs and Srs.

Has Shula done anything good? His first year we needed receivers and he had a great year with receives in Hall, Brown, Oakley, Stover.

The next year we were looking for RBs and we had another quality pull.

this past year it was OL and he had a top five class there.

Also someone developed JPW into a much better QB as a soph than anyone thought possible as a senior. So I think he should get some credit for the good stuff as well.

Everyone says that the defense carries the team but the offense leads the league in TOP and first down. You don't win games with either of the stats but it does make your defense look good.

I think he should get another year to pull it together. Otherwise, we bring in a new coach and he does good with Shulas player, he is a hero, if he doesn't then we have to give him another 3 years to get his "own" players in house.

Has Shula made mistakes? Yes plenty of them... but I think this year is only the 2nd year that Tubbs has ever won 10 games in a season and he made plenty of mistakes along the way. All coaches do.

I think the main problem Shula had is he kept telling himself no changes were need and he stood pat with his coaches and himself calling the plays. I think he finally got his wakeup call and deserves a year to see if he has learned anything.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

Dang, mashed the wrong button......oh well, I'm in the "stays if he makes changes" camp, but seriously, there are a LOT of things to consider, other than if he can coach or not.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

He just looks lost alot. Takes too much time to get the guts to pull the trigger and he's too predictible. I love what he has done for Alabama...coming here when he did. This is a tough place to coach. To coach here you have to be your own man, not the son of a somebody. I wish Mike the best but his best wasn't here.

Re: Should he stay, change or go?

I was the biggest Shula supporter there was due to his character, recruiting ability and love of Bama. However, I began to see fairly early on that Shula's biggest problem was an obivious inability to get his teams adequately prepared to play and to make coaching adjustments during a game.

I think Shula is a wonderful person and truly, truly hoped he would succeed. However, his record clearly indicates that he can beat losing teams about 88% of the time and that he loses to good, winning teams about 90% of the time.

The sad, honest truth is that he is at best a mediocre coach. Bama has never tolerated mediocrity. I don't think it should start now.
