Bebes on Finebaum

Uhh, you guys that had never heard that before must not have been paying attention to the tv broadcasts when he was coach because I must have heard it mentioned close to 100 times.

Was just listening to the interview again and the three things that struck me were first when CGS said you can't be happy just because you play well and then when PF asked him about if he was in Mike's position and he said he would be worried and then at the end of the interview when CGS said that at Alabama you have to beat UT, LSU, and the Barn and you can talk about wins but if you HAVEN'T beat anybody except for Hawaii and Fla Int. then you haven't beat anybody that's beat anybody. He also said the same thind about Fran at TAMU.

I think this speaks volumes. I supported CMS for a long time, but especially after hearing interviews like this one with CGS I just don't see how we can continue to go down the road of medicrioty that every coach since CGS has taken us down.

CGS did say he felt like he could Coach tomorrow and win, so why don't we bring him back and allow him to restore order and discipline to oue beloved program and then after a couple of years if CGS is ready to step down bring in a top notch coach to take over a fine tuned machine.

Stallings had some interesting comments about bowl games. I basically understood him to say why would fans spend money and travel very far to watch a 6-6 team play in a bowl game.

He even snagged Fran for saying aTm is going to a bowl. Stallings question was, and I am paraphrasing of course, "Who have they beaten to get to go to a bowl game, same thing goes for Alabama."

The man has a very good point. A bowl game is a reward for a good year, have we had a good year?

This is my comment, I understand the bowl will allow extra practice time for the younger players and provide the Seniors with one last game. I saw an interview with one Senior that didn't really seem to care if they went to a bowl game or not. That, in itself, speaks volumes of where this team is at this point.

What would we accomplish with the extra practice time? We have been practicing since early August and not improving as the season goes along. Would the team just be practicing the same flawed things they have been working on all season?

As the old saying goes, Never confuse activity with accomplishment.

Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. An old proverb that rings true here. How much improvement can a team make in 2-3 weeks that it couldn't make in 4 months?

Excellent observations about the worth of practice under this regime... will go a bit further and say that at least having another game allows this team to go out with a bit of momentum for next year... like with TT last year. However, as I did last year, I fear that even playing a bowl game could end up leading us even further on the downside of momentum.

He took a direct shot - though somewhat disguised - at Shula with a story comparing himself and his dad (IMO):

His dad studied storms and knew everything about them, while he would run anytime he would see one coming. Story wasn't told to illustrate the difference between Stallings and his dad. Sounded a little like the differences between Shula and his dad. While Don Shula was extremely successful, Mike is apparently the complete opposite; so far, anyway.

I heard Stallings on the WJOX 690 this morning. Basically, he said that he felt Shula should be given another year. He mentioned that it didn't make any sense to give a coach a raise and extension one year, and then fire him the next. He said changes do need to be made, but he said that didn't necessarily mean staff changes.
