Again, look at the facts, Spurrier's recruiting at SC has not been great, in fact lackluster. I think the name Alabama will carry plenty of weight! Once Johnson get's into place and starts winning, recruits will be soliciting to come to Bama.
Keep thinking that, meanwhile Spurrier is on tract to ink a very good class this year.

Spurrier: No interest in Alabama job
By Joseph Person

Published: November 27, 2006

A week after shooting down reports that linked him to the Miami job, USC coach Steve Spurrier said that he has no interest in the vacancy at Alabama, where Mike Shula was fired today after four seasons.

“I have no intention of leaving South Carolina,” Spurrier said in a statement released by USC. “It’s always flattering when a South Carolina coach is rumored for these big-time programs. This one will die down in two or three days, too.”

The 61-year-old Spurrier is 14-10 in two seasons at USC and will become the first coach in school history to guide the Gamecocks to bowl games in each of his first two seasons. He is in the second year of a seven-year contract worth $1.25 million annually.

What about Gizmo the cat? He seems pretty knowledgeable about football.
Gizmo was a Gremlin, not a cat. Get your facts in order, sir.

Spurrier is a great choice, but I don't think he's going anywhere. This past week he was quoted in the paper as saying that he thinks he can challenge for the SEC title next year. That bodes poorly for his leaving.

Yeah, he's no liar, mark him off the list. :(

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Yeah i've seen his credentials and he still doesn't have enough experience in division 1 to warrant getting the Bama job.

Put it in perspective. If Tubby Smith were fired would Kentucky seriously consider former Kentucky Wesleyan coach Ray Harper? He won two national championships!!

Well of course they wouldn't.

This is a serious and extremely important decision for MM to make. He needs to bring in a winner like Spurrier to bring the top recruits in. A guy like Johnson isn't going to register with the top prep stars.
Two words: Jim Tressel

The argument that you put forth doesn't have much merit.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

If Mal Moore made this call with Shula without having a solid lead on a replacement in mind then that should seal his fate IMO. It's already disturbing that he apparently did not even make informal overtures to Davis before he signed on with UNC given that Davis had apparently expressed interest in Bama. Implies that Moore still thought Shula would be around at that time (unless contact was made & Davis said "no" - which does not seem to be the case but I certainly would not be privy if it was). I'll certainly wait to pass judgment on Moore, but less than one day into search and the supposed top 2 candidates are turning him down before they even get an official offer. Could be better.

What a shock, Saban was not interested. Well, my dog was wrong.

I do predict three more threads on the front page with this story followed by a similar story from SOS soon...according to my sources...:rolleye2: :rolleye2:

Are those the same Gators that told all us USC fans that Spurrier would never accept the USC job and that he would never coach at another SEC East team that had to face UF every year?

I'm hoping for Steve Spurrier or Bob Petrino but it might be Paul Johnson.
I'm just the opposite. I'm hoping for Paul Johnson but it might be Petrino. I would take either one. I don't want Coach Steve. I would have wanted him 5 years ago.

Petrino is apparently pretty well set-up at UL. I wouldn't expect him to leave.
