Re: New Coach Speculation (ALL THOUGHTS ON COACHING PROSPECTS GO HERE!!!

I have just updated myself on the information on all of the boards out there. Apparently, we have offered our HC position to Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Houston Nutt, Bobby Petrino, Rich Rodriguez, Norm Chow, Bobby Ross, Dom Capers, Bob Stoops, and Butch Davis. Forgive me if i have left anyone off. Apparently from people who are in the know, several of these have already accepted the position...here are some of the rumors...
That's amazing. I want to believe all of it, I really do. I just don't really know what to make of it all. Quite frankly, I'm used to things not exactly going Bama's way, especially when it comes to coaching. I'm curious as to how serious we should take these rumors, and if there is one specifically that we should take a serious look at.

My opinion/knowledge of whats going on.

Is Saban/Spurrier the HC at Bama?

No

Are they being considered?

More than you know.

Guys, quit buying into the thought we aren't getting someone big. The University is aiming REALLY HIGH at this one. You think you're the only one mad about losing? Nope... there are people more upset that fans are booing at football games.

FWIW I have heard Saban is Bama's #1.... and Spurrier is a likely candidate as well...

Flame if you want, but when your backups include Rodriguez, Petrino, Johnson, and Grobe... fella's Bama is gonna be alright. Faith my friends.

I have no reason to lie to you.

Tradition is not dead, like some would have you to believe, coaches out there still dream about being coaches at Bama, and some of them have big names...

God I hope you're right. Good point about Petrino and Rodriguez being our "2nd choice" btw.

Listen, I may very well be wrong about this one, but I haven't been this excited about Bama football in quite some time, and this isn't just some baseless opinion. The wheels are turning.

Oh well the expert has spoken. Not that every statement above is the same as I have read on numerous sites. Tell all of us Tidefans something new.

Saban was contacted well before Thanksgiving and a deal was VERY CLOSE. If you knew that beforehand I'd be surprised

Any of those candidates except Johnson and Grobe....Johnson doesnt have the Off to play in the SEC and Grobe has only had 1 or 2 good years of winning!!!

Well, what do you think of all of these announcements about coaches "not being interested?" Or is it just all smoke and mirrors to allow for deals to get finalized?

Mods, please stick this with one of the other 100 threads about potential choices, this is pointless

The administration is persistent in getting someone big. It's the first day of Shula being fired, so it's hard to gauge how these coaches feel. The Department wants a NAME. However, it is just as likely the coaches classified as Tier B. I'm telling you man to man (not that it's going to happen or not) that Saban and Spurrier aren't as far-fetched as people want you to believe.

feelers were the only thing going on before today....period.

No coach will talk on the phone or in person with anyone with the university wihtout a position open. Agents may talk and say "yeah, sure" but they aren't always 100% accurate.

I hadn't heard that. But i did hear over Thanksgiving that a plane flew in to an airport. No one got off. A Bama guy got on and it was rumored to be a meeting with Spurrier.

Of course, i took it with a couple of lbs of salt and dont rely much on this sort of rumor. How can I be expected to believe that Spurrier was there because i have a friend has a friend who's cousin supposedly knows something?

Its difficult to believe that Spurrier (and ESPECIALLY Saban) would be interested especially after what they said today. Saban all but insulted Bama over the way we have handled the firing of Shula. Cant say as i blame him either.

And personally, i dont see why Spurrier would even want to come here. He obviously doesn't need the money. He doesnt have a thing to prove. The only thing that seems to hold his attention is the challenge in making SC a winner. Winning at Bama wouldnt be that much of a challenge for him. And throwing more money at him probably wouldnt matter. He's got enough plus he has some really cool golf courses to play on there.

:)

Why is it so difficult to believe they are interested?

Because they have good gigs.

If either Spurdog or Satan takes the job, I will walk away from tidefans.com for 1 year. And be thrilled about it.

I'm not saying they will come. Don't think they are not interested in it either though.

Jack's exactly right! They have good gigs. ;)

Dont get me wrong though. I would like to see Saban take the job here. He'd win championships imo. But after hearing what he said today, I just dont see it. He said Shula was a friend of his and gave me the impression he wasnt too cool with how Shula was dismissed. Not only did he say he hadn't been contacted....but he said he didnt want to be contacted. That was enough for me. I hate it too cos he'd be good here.

Spurrier otoh, well, I gave what I thought were very good reasons for him to not be interested. Maybe i'm wrong. If so, he'll win here too, but I dont think he'd stay very long. He's already what...61? Would he coach til he's 70? Maybe.

I'm still curious about what Christopher Walsh (of the Tusc. News) said about Tedford of Cal.

:)
