I live in Orange Beach and am not in B'ham very often, but I wanted to try it sometime.

But after listening to Don the past two days, I feel like I would need to take an aub fan with me as a food taster to make sure it wasn't poisoned!

Most of you talking about boycotting would probably never have gone to Shula's anyway.
I think you are right. I did not hear any boycots of "Wings" after Bob came out and said what he did about Shula's firing.

I think Don Shula, along with the majority of the country and many ex players/coaches...even Saban, thought that his son was not treated fairly in his firing. He pointed out that Mike had taken the job when the program was in bad shape and that this would have realistically been the 1st year he would have been on a level playing field with his competition. I'd bet over half the state questions the way things have been handled at the Capstone in the last 10+ years or even since Bear died.
Secondly, Saban was the coach of the pro team where Don Shula coached and still supports. He surly had some of the same feelings we had four years ago about Fran. There were some pretty nasty comments made then as well. So I can totally understand where he is coming from.

Even so, I am glad we have Saban. I think he will do great things for the program sooner rather than later. The way in which we got him may seem bad to some but, as we have learned, is the way things are done in this business. Did not Miami try to lure Bear away from us? Don Shula might find it hard to admit this but Cmon, dissin the man's steaks because they are different from what you get at the local Outback is a little absurd. I've seen people dissin the resturaunt on here ever since Mike was fired. I have eaten at a few of his steakhouses (moreso, before Mike was hired) and it has always been a class act. It is a class resturaunt for the Birmingham area so give it a rest already.

I went there once with my wife on our anniversary. The food was good, but not worth the $400+ bill.

I believe that they charged us $8 per bottle of Pellegrino.

I beg your pardon, TRU. I was dissing it years before CMS got fired. :) And - let the other posters be entitled to their opinion just as you've stated yours. Saying things like you closed with just heightens the possibility that you'll be ignored later on. Just a suggestion...

Thanks for saying exactly what you did. Give Daddy Don a year to cool off instead of getting in his face during theh heat of the moment and i suspect his opinion would have been toned down a little. I still think Mike Shula would have eventually figured it all out, but of course i'll never know that for sure. Not saying Shula would have done as well as we all wanted, but 55 freshmen is a little on the undeveloped side.

Have you guys ever tried Deamland's? This is a great restaurant one in T-Town and in Montgomery.
What is this Dreamland you speak of? Man, Dreamland BBQ is a borderline landmark in Tuscaloosa. I say that Dreamland is a virtual requirement for students to eat at least once before they graduate. Including City Cafe and a few of the restaurants on the strip.

The problem that Shula's is likely to have has nothing to do with daddy Don's mouth. The problem is that there are three top dollar steakhouses in Birmingham (Shula's, Fleming's and Ruth Chris), and my perception of the market is that there's only room for two. Being at the Wynfrey will help somewhat, but most of the serious cash is more likely to wind up at the other two due to location.

Shula's has a good steak, and they are REALLY proud of it. I'm thankful that of the three times I've eaten there, I've only had to foot the bill once.

I`ve never eaten there and probably never will. I burn my own cow every chance I get. My grill is a ribeye only kind of grill when it comes to the cow, but, there is one place called PJ`s up in Boldo, Alabama that has a fine cut of meat.

Never eaten there and probably never will. However, I don't blame Don Shula as he was a father striking out at what he believes was shoddy treatment of his son. Then to add salt to the wound, UA hires the coach away from his beloved Dolphins. He will probably mellow as time goes on.

I wish CMS all the best for the future. He did a wonderful job for the Tide with regard to healing the wounds the NCAA inflicted, recruiting well, and taking the first steps to bringing them back to prominence. That he fell short is unfortunate and I believe CNS will take these young men and mold them into a championship team -- what level of championship time will tell. However, he's got to squash Tubbs and wipe that smirk of his ugly face -- on the field, in recruiting, everywhere!

Didn't Daddy Don give notice that he was terminating his lease with those sideline comments he made the other evening ?

I have a general problem paying $90 for any meal I can cook myself at home.

I'll pay top dollar for food I don't cook well, but if I can outdo it at home for one-ninth the cost, I can't enjoy the meal in the restaurant. That goes for every franchise, not just Shula's.

And I cook a mean steak. ;)

JessN, I'm the same way. A hundred bucks for a meal is enough that I wouldn't really enjoy it. And that's if you go Dutch or eat alone. Also, when you're paying more for one meal than the waiter/server makes all night, you dang well better be nice to them or you might get something extra on your plate.

Impressed with yourself? Guess you know a lot about everyone.

BTW the steaks at Shula's are ok, no better, if you haven't been there. I wouldn't have went back if mike had stayed. I've had better.

this seems a little far-fetched to me, that there is only room for 2 high end steakhouses in metro birmingham.

I will agree with their only being room for 2 of those kinds of restaurants in B'ham. There are not that many people that want to pay those prices for that kind of food. I have eaten at Shula's and pesonally find it rediculous that I ate at Emeril's Delmonico in N.O. cheaper. The food there was also 10 times better. Back to the ham the once I have been to each Shula's and Ruth's Chris we had reservations but there were plenty of empty tables at each. I seriously doubt Shula's will make it in the market in b'ham. There just are not that many wealthy people in the area to support a large market of upscale establishments. No being critical of the area at all but it is mostly a blue collar area and there is definitely nothing wrong with that. They are just the types of places people are going to go to once a year or so and not every weekend.

I'm the exact same way. I don't like paying a lot for a steak. But some type of seafood dish that I couldn't pull off at home is a different story.

Any of us that have a son can relate somewhat to a father speaking in his defense, but daddy don could have used different words to express his dissatisfaction with the whole situation as opposed to basically taking a shot at everyone living in the state of Alabama. you would think don shula would be at least a somewhat accomplished, astute businessman and understand that you don't p*** off your whole customer base. I walked over to Shulas steakhouse when i was in the galleria last week and they were DEAD. look for them to close the doors pretty soon and bring some other tenant in. What did it used to be called--Winston's? Anyone remember that?
