In this day of parity you have to have something to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. Coaching is a much bigger piece of that puzzle than ever before.

I heard one guy on a call in show say that the store (didn't catch which one) had sold 1,000 t-shirts in one hour.

They can call us all the names that they want, we are giving them a lesson in capitalism.........and worry.

And that's what ESPN and rival fans using the "breaking the bank" card CHOOSE not to look at. Saban's hire benefits the "little man" that is selling Alabama T-Shirts at the Dollar General store in York, Alabama. It boost the overall economy for the STATE. The University of Alabama pays $4 million a year to open the door for many in the community to make a helluva lot more money than they would have if Saban hadn't been hired.

Yes, but think about what its doing to the "little man" down in say Enterprise who is trying to make a living selling Auburn T shirts, One for the thumb, and yes even toilet paper? I mean you gotta consider the impact on everyone. Of course there can only be one answer for the caring Bama Fan. "We don't really give a crap about those Barners!:biggrin2:

4 Million is worth the exposure and the sales created by the Coach Saban's employment. Merchandise sales, Ticket sales, TV deals, and so much more. You say we have had it all along and you are right, but not to the degree its headed now. Check out BAMA Sales, and ticket sales. :BigA:

I would like to know how much more money that 21% equals. I wouldn't be surprised if the University made up Coach Saban's contract in additional donations. Coach Saban was just hired, imagine what donations will be like when we start winning games. Plus there is also the additional money that will come in when we start going to good bowl games. When everything is added up $4 million per year is a great bargain and Coach Saban is worth every penny. Coach Saban is worth his weight in gold.
 
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Over the years Bama has built up incredible capital, And now we are using it. Not many programs are in a position to be able to do such but, thanks to our HISTORY, we are . Others may say we live too much in the past, but that past is what has made us such a financially sound program. It's allowed us to flex our muscles a bit now and show just how powerful our program still is in the college football world.
 
IMO, just like the hiring of Coach Saban, the salary makes a statement (a very loud statement) that we are committed to making our football program the very best it can possibly be and we are willing to make the correct decisions to get us out of this hole that a few of our 'rats' have dug us into. That in itself should strike fear into our opponents.
 
This is not a business question, but rather a moral/ethical question in my opinion. From a business standpoint, it is absolutely a reasonable contract. Saban was purchased at market value. The return on this investment will likely be tremendous. And the University's pockets are more than deep enough to make such a purchase. So from a pure business standpoint, there is nothing wrong with Saban making $4 million a year because that's just the way these things work.

The real question is more of an ethical question. Does it bother you that a football coach makes $4 million a year, while a fireman, teacher, police officer or other public servant lives paycheck to paycheck? If so, then this is an indictment of our society, not specifically the University or Saban himself. Now, I'm not going to sit here and tell anyone to boycott football or anything of that nature. That would be horribly hypocritical of me. I'm as big of a fan as anybody (otherwise I probably wouldn't be posting on this board). I just think that this question is much more loaded than whether or not Saban is worth the money he's making.

I apologize...I should clarify. I meant "paycheck to paycheck" as a figurative expression, and certainly did not mean to imply that all firefighters, policemen and teachers lived paycheck to paycheck. I know of some who do or have in the past, however. What I was trying to say is that I personally think our society has its priorities out of order, and that I'm as guilty as the next person.

This is not a new question and I feel a little frustrated that these type of questions are regularly being asked around the Saban issue. Was this an issue when Stoops got paid 3.45?
 
The jets could have signed a $50,000 QB.Was Joe worth it to the jets,many said at the time,no way! But time told a different story,We could have gotten a coach for less money,but time will tell if we made a good investment.You have to lay some down if you want to pick something up ! I WENT TO LOOK AT A HUNTING DOG ONCE,THE OWNER ASK A HIGH PRICE,I TOLD HIM I WAS ONLY GOING TO HUNT ABOUT A HALF A DAY, HE SAID HE HAD A DOG LIKE THAT!:)
